Yes you can. As long as you don't switch during combat you may use a mundane weapon as aposed to your magic weapon. I have never header any one say that before. Where did you get that idea from?

Well It would be fun, but it is illegal. Untits must have a front rank of 4 at the smallest or they can snake, but they can not have a front rnk of less then four unless their is less hen four models in the unit. So basically you can't do that formation. So their is no need to give it further thought.
