Totally OT - Thermodynamics of Hell

Post by Malekithau »

Just thought this collection of degenerates would enjoy this -

THERMODYNAMICS OF HELL

The following is an actual question given on a University of Washington
chemistry midterm. The answer by one student was so profound that the
professor shared it with colleagues, via the Internet, which is, of course,
why we now have the pleasure of enjoying it as well.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

Bonus Question: Is Hell exothermic (gives off heat) or endothermic (absorbs
heat)?
Most of the students wrote proofs of their beliefs using Boyle's Law, (gas
cools off when it expands and heats up when it is compressed) or some
variant. One student, however, wrote the following:
First, we need to know how the mass of Hell is changing in time. So we need
to know the rate that souls are moving into Hell and the rate they are
leaving. I think that we can safely assume that once a soul gets to Hell, it
will not leave. Therefore, no souls are leaving.

As for how many souls are entering Hell, let's look at the different
religions that exist in the world today. Some of these religions state that
if you are not a member of their religion, you will go to Hell. Since there
are more than one of these religions and since people do not belong to more
than one religion, we can project that all souls go to Hell. With birth and
death rates as they are, we can expect the number of souls in Hell to
increase exponentially.

Now, we look at the rate of change of the volume in Hell because Boyle's Law
states that in order for the temperature and pressure in Hell to stay the
same, the volume of Hell has to expand proportionately as souls are added.
This gives two possibilities:
1. If Hell is expanding at a slower rate than the rate at which souls enter
Hell, then the temperature and pressure in Hell will increase until all Hell
breaks loose.

2. Of course, if Hell is expanding at a rate faster than the increase of
souls in Hell, then the temperature and pressure will drop until Hell
freezes over.
So which is it? If we accept the postulate given to me by Ms. Teresa Banyan
during my freshman year that "... it will be a cold day in Hell before I
sleep with you." And take into account the fact that I still have not
succeeded in having sexual relations with her, then #2 cannot be true, and
thus I am sure that Hell is exothermic and will not freeze.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

The student received the only "A" given.

You think that made your day, listen to this. I was watching the gre cup the other day(canadian super bowl) and the eskimoes were 8 points behind. Last play of the game. They did a hail mary. The QB threw the ball to an eskimo player. He caught and began to run. When he was about to be tackled he threw the ball (backward) to his teammate rugby style. They continued this until the 9th yard line, when one of the eskimo players panicked and accidently threw the ball to a montreal player. That made my year!!! The hell thing is very funny. I think i will playgurize that thank you.

lol ive seen this one.

another one was in a philosophy HSC paper. The Question was simply:
Why?

Many people went into the meaning of life, religion and so on, but one person wrote:
Why not?
before leaving the exam about 2 hours early.

He got full marks.

Nice story that. Also like the 'why?' 'why not' and 'because' one.

Actually, he did show the professor he understood the question, and then proceeded to state why he felt the answer was a certain way.

I think it was pretty clever myself.

Like I said its a sad state when the peak of achievement is mearly to understand the question.

I agree that it was entertaining and cleaver but worth an A? I guess the question was basically just that dumb. It made it so that your reasonings behind your answer did not have to do with the initial question, your application Boyl's Law, or Science. In which case anything should have got an A.

I think the instructor was looking for ingenuity-something very few instructors teach these days. Frankly, I would rather have a student who had a weaker grasp on the subject matter yet was willing to think "outside the box" get an A than one who knew the subject matter better yet didn't have the flexibility to think differently than what the text tells him to get an A. The first person will make a difference with his knowledge, the second will merely continue the status quo.

No, I am not saying that people should be able to pass a class with "ingenuity"-the person obviously knew the material, and gave a reason behind his answer. He proved knowledge of the material being tested, and proved that he can think on his own without "structured book learning." That deserves an A.
