Alas, poor Pluto

Post by Icon hack »

It's official, Pluto has been stripped of it's status as a planet:

Pluto Demoted

It kind of saddens me, I always liked the little bugger.

Wishing everyone the very best, to the end of your days.

That was the funniest news today! I really laughed at the debate which cosmic objects to call "planet" and which not...

Sad for Pluto, but I'm delighted that there will probably be several more planets, including Xena and its (her?) moon Gabriella! Hillarious...

Well, they did it because otherwise we´d soon have around 20 to 30 planets. Pluto is very different from the planets (I almost wrote "the other planets, but that would´ve been wrong now :P ), both in the plane of rotation as well as the form of its rotation. The planets could all be said to rotate on a single plain, as if on a disc, but not pluto.
It´s nice to be important, but it´s more important to be nice.

Good. The only reason it was ever made a planet in the first place was because it was the only one discovered by an American...

The debate on what is a planet and what isn't kind of reminds me of the philosophical/mathematical question: how many rocks do you need to have a big pile?

It has long been suspected that Pluto was more of a big clot of space debris, rather than a planet.

On the plus side for poor Pluto all the other "planet things" have been named after it, they are called Plutons.

Well I heard that if all Pluto's ice were to melt, it'd be about the size of our moon. So that's doesn't exactly sound like a planet to me.

I heven't heard much about these other planets that may be added, though...

Typical Brits, just jealous that it took a German (Uranus) and a Frenchman (Neptune) to legitimately discover the last couple that the ancients didn't...

I'm sad to see it go, one of the first in the piles of mnemonics I have learned was those in elementary school when I remembered the order of the planets by:

"My Very Excellent Mother Just Sat Under Nine Pizzas"

Now what I am going to do with this? The best part is gone.

However it will always be a planet to me. God Bless America, and the Planet Pluto.

When it comes to shoring up british pride, I think Pluto was named by a british girl ;)

I was liked the aura of mystery surrounding pluto. It should be a planet, not some psuedo-planet...

just you watch pluto will be the only planet with intelegent life and when they here we have kicked them out of the club they will be pissed. other than that i just wish they could leave well enough alone.

p.s. i think they did this for the money. they get to sell all new books on the solar system to all the schools  that is a ton of money.

I doubt it, new science/astonomy books come out at least every two years. Unless you're in a really poor private school, than your school has been buying new ones fairly often.

The reason they did it is because there were tons of other celestial objects that would have to be called planets if they kept Pluto as one. So they dropped Pluto to avoid a dozen new "planets".

Well Kreoss, your argument here sound reasonable enough, althougt I can't stop myself to think it's kind of strange. Pluto is a important part of the Cthulhu Mythos and even of Starship Trooper and certainly many other fantasie/Sci-fi thingie. Man, that's like a witch hunt of sort. Remember what they to Copernic? Well it's Pluto turn now to be shutted up...

Do you know what this will REALLY mess up?, Astrology, Know that Pluto is gone, that changes everything. Make no mistake, I also miss Pluto. Still, it is sort of funny when you think about, " Bad accidents will happen to you because of the planet Plu.. I mean Venus is at a wierd angle." :D
