SITE DEVELOPMENT: What resolution do you use?

Post by Rork »

Excuse the capitals.

As part of the development group's work to improve the site, we'd like to know what resolution you use to view Druchii.net. This will help us develop the site so it is suitable for the maximum number of users and make sure it suits your needs.

If you use multiple computers to view the site on a regular basis, put down whichever one uses the lowest resolution.

(Under Windows XP, right click on your desktop and click properties. You'll find it under 'settings'. Vista, right click on the desktop, click personalise then 'Display settings'. I'll let a mac user explain the Mac way ;))

Thank you for your help.

1280x800. BAH! Your silly poll can't even handle the awesomeness of my screen.

Yes it can....

For those of you who don't know how to do this:

Right click on your desktop, select "properties" and then the "settings" tab. It should be obvious from there.

I'll see your measly 1280x800 and raise it to 1920x1200 (yes, maximized... and font size increased :P) 70% of the time, 3360x1050 30% of the time (granted not even maximized on one screen).

That's like a combined (does quick math) 2352x1155 maximized-size weighted average. Man, what a weird screen ratio that'd be: 2.036:1

@Tarbo: So that it's safe for work, or do pretty colors cause bad acid flashbacks? ;)

@Azure: Tablet PC? You know, if you're only (non-text browser) person who uses below 800px I will be forced to come down there and off you so that we can just ignore that, right? (also ;))

1600x1024 mostly. But it's not even close to being the max.

1600x1200 at home (and sometimes 1200x1600 (turning the screen by 90 degree)). It is planned to get another one with 1920x1200 as side-screen for watching TV ^^

1280x1024 at work (= side-monitor, main is 1600x1200 too)

(yes, maximized... and font size increased :P)

Depends. Usually 1024x768, with mozilla sidebar switched on, which effectively reduces the rendering area to something like 800x600.

@Thalon: Nah, man, good eyes no glasses, but the 1920x1200 is my 15.4" laptop screen and this website has the smallest standard text size of any I visit.

Less bandwidth, no epilepsy-inducing banners, no eye-tearing colour themes, no chance at some virus or other malware sneaking along. I turn to trusty ol' Lynx more than once to get the 80's slamming through my head again. ;)

Seriously, it's a forum, it's text, so I think "text browser". It's usually a sign of good design if a website is serviceable on text-based browsers.

But I guess I'm just weird like that.

*BUMP*
We need more poll responses on this please! If your resolution isn't an option on the poll then post in the thread what you use, please!

We want to make sure everyone's happy, but not voting means you have no right to complain later! (Yes, I'm American, so if anyone's upset about my jibe, too bad :P! BTW kudos Australia with your mandatory voting.)

Used bandwidth is independent of your resolution. Servers do not (and can not) differentiate on your resolution since that information is not available to them.

Site looks fine to me and I wouldn't have a clue how to change my settings if it didn't.

Nah, I fully support this.
In theory.

Just can't be bothered with actually doing it. ;)

1024x768 on this crappy old laptop
1280x1024 on my 20" flatscreen at home.

From a web designer to another; all websites should look good in 800x600 to be a properly desined site :)

And sorry for threadnomancy, but it was on the top of the top...

Absolutely. But experimenting is fun ;).

Nah. It's stuck to the top for long term purposes as much as anything...
