Health Issues, well really minor!

Post by Azure »

So after painting over the past week trying to get my BoC army done for this tournament on sunday I've noticed that if I paint for extended amounts of time and then put the brush down and twist my wrist it goes numb. Does anyone know what would cause this and should I go to a doctor? I've played video games all my life so maybe its due to my wrist being on my mouse all the time. I'm not really sure but it seemed like it would be worth asking to a bunch of people who may or may not have the same issue.

when on a computer you must sit in a desk chair with the screen atleast 1 metre away from you. your back must be straight with good support and your arms must rest lightly on the keyboard (desk must be just under ribcage height when sitting).

same really applies with painting and stuff, in my point of view it is advisable to take a break every hour or so, just walk to the couch sit down and relax for 30 mins, it stretches your muscles abit and get you into a different position while giving your arms and hands a rest. Im not a doctor or anything but thats what i do, or i go for a walk or something. I would go see a doctor if my wrists started going numb, does it happen at any other time when your doing anything else or is it only after you've been painting? it does sound like you might want to go see a doctor just to be sure. Do you have to twist your wrist a certain way ?

Sometimes when I'm writing papers by hand for a long time... and it only happens if I twist my wrist to the right. The same motion as pouring water or somehting

its worth getting it checked out as you may have developed either too much or too little cartilage , which could lead to arthritis and carpel tunnel syndrome. Both would be favorable to avoid, though you could try smoking weed now an again, it relaxes the muscles around your joints allowing them to rest properly.

I live in the US where weed is illegal and I am going into law enforcement... even though I've dabbled that is no longer an option

This is going to sound really obvious, but if something's making your wrist numb, stop doing it. The advice here is sound - take regular breaks from painting and do something else for a few minutes. You may have early signs of carpal tunnel syndrome, so if it gets worse, particularly if it starts coming on spontaneously, see a doc. Anti-inflammatory drugs like ibuprofen may help, but go easy on them.
You need to get out more.

You need to take breaks from painting once in a while. It's probably a stress injury in your muscles around the wrist from too much strain for hours on end. If the pain/numbness does not disappear after a week of rest, see a doctor about it.

Well I used to play PC games all my childhood and I paint quite regular sometimes even for 3 hours or so. I only noticed I feel a bit sick in my stomach when I glue to much so I vent my working place better. The wrist thing - have no idea but there are few things I can tell you:

- non of us is a doctor and even if there are meds here they can't help you without examination so all our advices are WAY unprofessional and I wouldn't rely on them (including my own - which make a nice paradox :) )

- If this bothers you go to the doctor - don't worry he have his office somewhere near you I'm sure and the "basic" doctor (not like a surgeon or any "specialized" med) is all you need. Maybe if you don't want to go now (for whatever reason) simply wait - you will need to visit a doctor sooner or later and then you can ask, just as you will have the occasion. But I will tell this once more: we won't help you - if it bothers you (and since you asked it probably does) go to the doctor. Simple as that :)

I really hope you will get better mate!

Haha Skot, I know yall are just as un educated as me about this, I was just looking for what yall think!

And I think ill just try and paint with a few more breaks and if it still happens I'll head over to the doctor... OR I'll act like it started hurting at work and then get a free check! ^^ (just kidding btw, i play by the rules)

why play by the rules when you can have oodles of fun!?! i mean yes officer.....

almundis is correct in his assumption though, canabis is great for relaxing your muscles....its also great for relaxing your brain tissue which is why it drives people insane and is generally illegal. herbal tea anyone?

actually the proven links between canabis and psychosis are tenuous at best. The recorded findings of psychosis have been found in people who smoke ridiculous quantities, in the same way that tobacco kills people.

for comparison 43 people died in the UK directly from canabis last year, 114,000 were killed by smoking, and 44,000 by alcohol- and that's not even counting people who get pissed and run around in roads...

Skunk however, will indeed drive you delightfully mad...

i would say though that alot less people smoke canabis on a day-to-day basis than people who drink or smoke, so the statistics arent really very reliable.

I have seen first hand the results of smoking large amounts of canabis on the mind. It becomes distorted, haluccinations occur constantly according to scientists. its quite frightening when you see a patient in a psychiatric old people home whose suffering from that.

Well it sounds like you are over stressing the muscle. If it happens everytime (rather then once off), then you should have it checked out. Alot of times its just over stressed and needs a break period, but it could be early carpul tunnel, or nerve damage.

A friend of mine who spent a good portion of her day pouring coffee ended up damaging the nerve in her wrist for the repetitive motions.

You cut your wrist? Then it could easily be what harabec suggested. See if it happens more.

actually if you cut your wrist it could be fine, i get little numb areas in my stomach from where i had surgery, it could just be the muscle trying to heal itself in an area that is hard to heal as it moves so much.

I know this problem very well, I have now "thing" growing over my left hand wrist wich is pretty annoying and makes my hand going numb from time to time it comes from actions you do again and again with the same position in your case I guess painting and overstressing the muscles over a long time, in my case holding my assault rifle to often and long in low ready position.

Go to the doctor soon mate, I get my "thing" on my wrist cutted out soon.

I had some bad RSI in my wrists from an old injury and too much typing over the course of a college year. I had to pretty much quit using the computer or doing anything that put too much strain on the wrist for it to get to a managable level. The most irritating part of the whole thing was that x-rays turned up nothing and it was dismissed as "all in my head". However if you've found that you had cut yourself in the relevant area then you're probably not in the same boat but giving the wrist some time off anyway wouldn't hurt.

The number of people who smoke rediculous quantities is supprisingly high and the general-public accepted definition of "psychosis" is miles off the clinical definition. And even if it wasn't much more dangerous a substance than people like to admit (just like most things to be fair) it's still illegal and should not be advised in the context of a highly-scruitinised public forum which draws the majority of it's membership from outside jurisdictions which allow it.

It seems like just a repetitive strai injury. taking plenty of breaks is probably all you needto do. But I would also try to exercise the hand a bit in other directions than you are used to. I get similar (although much worsethan you describe) problems with my legs and feet due to the amount of running I do. But regular stretching and exercising the mucles in slightly different ways to the position they are most commonly in certainly helps me avoid injuring myself too badly. It seems as though I now spend almost as much time stretching as I do running now!

I've got a ganglion on my right wrist and Im pretty sure it was down to using the mousepad on my laptop all the time.

Belting it with a book seemed to get rid of it for a little while but unfortunately it came back. The problem is that i have become so used to using the damn thing that I almost have to tie my right hand behind my back to stop me frm using it.

Perhaps I should just disable the damn thing (why diddnt i think of that before  )

Before this cannabis thing goes further: We are talking about Azure's wrist, not the safe usage og illegal(in most of the world) drugs. While the discussion is interesting, we should stick to the topic...

It does sound like a form of RSI.
The break thing is a good idea.
I always try to let paint dry longer then necessary, that way you'll have a minute or two rest before you start painting again.

On the Cannabis, whether it's bad for you or not, he wants to go into law-enforcement and it's probably illegal where he lives, so no option at all I guess.
