So today is the big day for the Polish team - if they don't beat Austria, they're out of the tournament :( The best possible solution for Poland is to beat Austria with more than one goal. It would also be great if the Germans massacred the Croatia more than 2:0. That really would increase Poland's chnaces of getting through the group phase.

As for Portugal I was pleasantly surprised in the lack of diving that they did. Of course I was studying so I may have missed a few.

Romania and Greece are in the same situation... we lack out of ordinary football players. But we have a team. The days of Gheorghe Hagi, Gica Popescu and Co are nice memories, but this generation of romanian football players are just different. In 94, in the US world cup, Romania had a golden generation of players and a crappy coach. He wasn't doing tactics, he was kissing icons of Jesus and praying for a miracle. He had arguably the best team in the world after Brazil and he had no idea how to field them. That's why we ended 5th.
Now, we have a very good coach, and crazy on top of everything, but we lack extraordinary football players. So he is doing his best and they are doing their best. We are in the worst group ever and football is a competitive sport. Now, the competitive way for Romania is to play that catenaccio. The first game against France was boring also because the french were afraid. They played with 6 defenders! You can't attack properly with 4 players, and romanians couldn't counter attack.
There are many romanians that accuse the team of anti football and always mention the memory of our golden generation of players, but times change and the corruption in the country and the lack of investments in football resulted in this situation. Most of them think it is better to play an open game with the risk of taking sound defeats than to play ultra defensive. Me, on the other hand i like to try the best. And now, the best way is this italian catenaccio we are playing.
To make a paralel with warhammer. Most of the oponents i've defeated felt frustrated when playing against my dark elves. When i deployed my army they were rubbing their hands sure of an easy victory (50% of the army is core, only 4 lvls of magic, moderate shooting). At the end of the game it was different. They called me chicken, sneaky bastard and so on. They pointed out that i always flee, and i rarely charge their units and well, that i am not a man, cause i don't play like a man etc etc. But the thing is, with the list we have now, that style of play was the only one that brought results for me. It took me a while to figure it out, as my first 9 games with the dark elves ended in 9 massacres for my oponents. As i was trying to go toe to toe with my oponents.
Same in football. If Romania would have tried to go toe to toe with its oponents, we would have been smashed to pieces.(this is the reason why for 8 years we didn't qualify for wc or ec. We were playing a flashy kind of football. It looks nice on tv, but it won't give you victories). So here we are in 2008, in a group with arguably some of the best teams on this planet. And we are a nobody. What would you choose? To try and mimic the lords but end up thrown back in the dirt as a serf, or to try to work hard and always be aware of your humble condition? I'll choose the second anytime.

My two cents,
Chelu

Go Romania!

@Drizzt: Well Spoken
;)

The same goes for Greece too. First of all if others were more capable they could have beaten our tactics back on 2004 plus right now we have some of our basic players and good scorers not playing either due to retirement or just because they are traumatized. At least we work as a team and not as a horde many teams come to mind... sure we do not have the superstars of Brazil, Italy ,Portugal, Germany and others but we work as a team with a well organized defense and a coach that all of us adore and gave us many victories.
"If you can't stand out the heat just get out of the kitchen" we have our own strategy and has proven useful on past. Just like any other team in the world has it's own. Italy scores a goal and then closes in defense while Brazil rushes forward in a furry of goals and many others alike...
In the match with Sweden we had our chances and we didn't score...good and fair we have two more games and nothing is over yet the only things that bother me is that we lacked a good shooter and secondly we were playing Sweden but got beaten by a Ballkanian.
'And lo, he shall rule with a dark hand and his shadow shall touch uppon every land.'

Will grind them when they're near...

Wich is born in Sweden.
You can't pick your parents nor your heritage.

Also, it's not like he was the only player on the field, nor did all the goals by himself.

On a second note, I find it ironic that 7/11 of the starters in the swedish team is from Scania. Wonder when the rest of sweden will learn to shut up with their bullying against Scania.

I just want to point out, I wasn't making fun of Greece or Romania, just mentioning that I dont like how they play. Its reminiscent of Italy years ago (though they don't do it as much now) and is quite boring to watch.

Sorry to all the poles out there but I'd love to see Germany lose to the Croatia!... looks like it might happen as well!

Croatia won, 2-1. Last couple minutes were pretty intense though...

wow great match from Croatia and germany both were played well... until the end, if schweinsteiger were avoided that little push he's match were great, but ballack were a bit lame the whole game I think a little improvement from him would made germany victory.

I suppose both Austria and Poland were cheated in a way - Poland scored an off-side goal and Austria got a penalty out of nowhere.
To be honest - I think that Poland played an absolutely disgusting game, especially in the first half. The goalie somehow saved us from total annihilation. Oh, well, now we know who Poland is going to meet in the quarterfinals - the fans at the airport. :)

Well that was an unexpected outcome of todays matches.
Honestly i think Germany really did a bad job, our defence was really weak.
Also i´m not really excited about the chice of players Löw made, Odonkor had to play in a defensive position in many situations??? What was that supposed to be?
if they go on like that they won´t have a chance to win the title. Let´s hope that it was just this one game and they go back to the kind of game we know they are able to play.

Group C is going to be interesting tomorrow, i´m really excited to see the games.

Italy - Romania. National anthems playing right now.

Del Piero and De Rossi are starting... finally... Gives me hope in Bonadino to tell you the truth. We will see I guess!

What a great game.
Both teams are playing really good. Especially the keepers are excellent on both sides.
I have to admit Italy has been a bit unfortunate, but they are not the better team, Romania is just as good from my point of view.

Sorry Valvet but I disagree.

Italy shouldve been up 1 point the entire game except for a bull#!$$ call from a terrible ref. Ref was bad all game IMO. Not to mention that terrible Penalty kick call... and then 2 seconds later on the Romanian side Toni gets taken down in the box and hmm look no call. Sorry but Italy deserved to win that game. Absolutely disgusting and that Ref should not be reffing anything but MAYBE high school soccer. Hmm... I might sound a bit bitter but that was absolute and positive crap IMO.

it all was upon a little mistake made by zambrotta, Italy had their chanses and failed them and so did romania. Can't tell which team should been won

I must say that I really enjoyed watching the Italy - Romania game. It was hard fought and full of action - the kind of game that proves that watching football is worthwhile.

Yes, i see what you mean Azure and i have to agree to some extent, but you surely are a bit upset and bitter. Toni´s goal really wasn´t an offside at all, but with the penalty issue, i´m not that convinced, i would have to watch those scenes again. But if you look at the whole game i must say that in the beginning Italy played better, bu Romania was able to keep up, it was a very entertaining game, thats for sure, but Italy just wasn´t as good as we all have seen them before. I don´t think they deserved to win.

But how can they not deserve to win when they offside that got called Toni was 2-3 feet on sides. Not to mention that there was an Italian player in between the penalty kick call. IE he couldn't see anything. Watch the highlights and you'll see what I'm talking about.

They don´t deseve thw win, IMHO, just because it was such an hard fought game. Romania fought the game really hard, and so did Italy, and both team were even, they played on an equal level, so the result for such a game, that two teams played so great, as i see it, is a remis.
After all it is football and it lives or dies with the ref´s decisions.

Please don´t get me wrong Azure i fully understand your point of view, i wouldn´t feel any other way.

Great game, one of the highlights of the tournament so far.

Definitely a great game. I just feel that with any other ref the result would've been different which IMO isn't what the Euro or World Cup are about. It should be about the players, not a bogus offsides call nor a PK that a ref couldn't see.

Really nice job from the Romanian team, I really would have wished Mutu to score that penalty.

Duh for Germany's defeat at the hands of Croatia but then again they played some real rubbish there so it was deserved.
