This Site is Old... What Chat?

Post by MangoPunch »

I was perusing some old threads, mad beside realizing that this site is like 12 years old (and That I am only a very recent, not particularly significant part of it) I saw multiple references to 'the chat' - which sounded like there was a chat function on the site. Was this the case? Where'd it go?

Unfortunately, the "chat" link on the top is running into issues lately. Sun decided to ramp up the security of Java, and as such Java applets like the chat function are getting into trouble. It's becoming a troublesome thing:
- Java is needed to provide a persistent connection. It's why most IRC clients are Java based
- One of Sun's new restrictions tackles connections.

It's best to use an IRC chat client with the following parameters:
- Server: Burstfire.UK.EU.GameSurge.net
- Port: 6667
- channel: #DnetChat

Perhaps it is time to seek out a newer version of the applet? The certificates have long since expired, and there may be promising alternatives out there.

Code: Select all

$ jarsigner -verify -verbose -certs irc.jar

s      10820 Mon Nov 29 20:08:42 CET 2004 META-INF/MANIFEST.MF

      X.509, EMAILADDRESS=theplouf@yahoo.com, CN=Philippe Detournay, C=BE
      [certificate expired on 2/11/06 13:24]
      X.509, CN=GlobalSign ObjectSign CA, OU=ObjectSign CA, O=GlobalSign nv-sa, C=BE

Then again, I may know my Java, but I'm clueless on IRC clients.

We tried to find a new applet when updating the website. Unfortunately, we didn't find any that proved more usable.

The certificate may be old but that has only become a problem recently. They tightened up the security around certificates, and basically you need a new one approved by them.
