Topic of the Week - Your hobby resolutions for 2016

Post by Daeron »

Greetings Tyrants!

2016 has begun. It's a good time to make plans and false promises! :)
But some plans and promises can be deadly real, like our hobby resolutions. What are your hobby resolutions for 2016?

For me, it's more of the same thing. I got very few games in 2015 and I want to work on that. Also, I feel I've been playing too often with unpainted, or proxy minis on a flat table. So.. For 2016 I'll focus on the gaming and the hobby: play more, play painted, play on a proper table.

And ... try to make a few more YouTube vids.
I love me a bowl of numbers to crunch for breakfast. If you need anything theoryhammered, I gladly take requests.

2016 promises.

Get back to painting and actually finish an army.
A few Kings of War tournaments are earmarked and I intent to get back to competitive war gaming.
Get more active on Universal Battles as I am not really in a gamer heavy area currently.

I "plan" on painting a majority of the unpainted Dark Elves and Beastmen I've collected over the last few years. I believe that picking up games like Kings of War and Frostgrave recently will continue to give me a reason to paint models that I'll want to play with, even if they aren't necessary for a GW in the near term.

I also plan learning the basics of airbrushing and sculpting with greenstuff. I got an airbrush for Christmas that I want to use on my Kharibdyss and Giant, and I would like to greenstuff fur onto my Giant to make it blend in better with my beastmen.

Terrainwise, I'm looking forward to kicking it old school and building some classic styrofoam terrain for Frostgrave.

This year 2016 starts very oddly.
WH8th has been killed by GW.
Its replacement by GW, Age of Sigmar, has yet to release Exile Aelfs models and fluff, with probably some extra rules.
Its replacement by ETC community, 9th Age, has not stabilized the rules and has not released any fluff for Dread Elves.

-=-=-

My most important resolution for the hobby is... to maintain Druchii.net alive!
This is tough now.

1. Gaming activity is now split in three main parts:
- 8th can no longer have new players, formerly source of lots of tactics and rules questions.
- AoS generates hardly any question on rules (clear enough) nor tactics (simple enough), and little has emerged about scenarios which ought to be the best part of it.
- 9th Age is not stabilized, and nearly all the traffic it generates goes to 9th age forum.
- Other gaming systems have attracted old players irritated by GW; they don't generate traffic here anymore.
- the sum of all of these categories is largely below what 8th ed used to be here.

Hope for the future comes from:
- the expected release of a more stable 9th Age army book; this should generate some demand for rules clarification (although 9th Age rules are clear, they are still complex and sometimes depart from old habits or earlier versions of 9th Age) and tactics (nothing such as auto-play units in this version of the game).
- the expexted release of AoS models for the Exiles; this should incite new gamers to start the hobby; as there is no GW website for them to ask rookie questions, we may become the ones to offer this service.

Meanwhile, D.net needs to survive, thanks to old timers still interested with 8th ed, to those who did turn to AoS and have an occasional batrep, and to those participating to 9th Age who remain faithful to their old website. The 2016 early resolution is to have D.net remain a cosy home for all of them.

2. P&M:
With little new players, 8th models frozen, AoS not relasing yet new models, 9th Age making good use of all kind of old models, and no need to get new models for competition, there is little reason for activity there.
Hope for the future comes from AoS bound to release superb models of Exile Aelfs, and all other companies taking advantage of the vacuum left by GW to release new models for 9th age Dread Elves.
Meanwhile, D.net must welcome the little remaining activity, for example with an emphasis on terrain wich is not supposed to change much.

3. Fluff:
WH fluff was overthrown by the End Time series and then killed by GW. AoS and 9thAge fluff are unreleased and bound to depart from WH.

However, the future is bright:
- 9th Age fluff will depart from WH, but will be set in the familiar, Earth-like setting we loved. The team demonstrated a superb talent with their first release, Undying Dynasties. A couple more months to wait!
- AoS fluff will have a very weak continuity with WH and End Times. There will be some new developments, with a high fantasy style. Although the expectation is moderately low, we might be pleasantly surprised by GW. This could reasonably happen in 2016, but no date is known yet.

Meanwhile, the only possible fluff stories are related to good old WH setting, possibly extending to ET. Let's welcome it when it happens!

-=-=-

On a more personal viewpoint:

Game:
Still in-between WH8th, Age of Sigmar and 9th Age.
I just started playing AoS with my son, using our WH8 models. Will keep investigating its worth for us, compared to 8th Ed. As we play slow pace, casual games focusing on scenario, that might work.
No intention to try 9th Age until the rules are more stable, i.e. a couple of months more to wait - but at that time, my son will be gone for months.
I may resume some gaming theoretical analysis, with the help of Daeron's shiny tools.

Fluff:
When 9th Age will release their first version of DE AB, I will certainly read it avidly. A few more months to wait, I guess.
Don't know yet how I will exploit it, possibly trying to start a roleplay game on D.ent with this new fluff?

P&M:
Most of my minis being barely painted, I need to finish them to a more acceptable quality. This should help me keeping busy until 9th Age and AoS generate activity again.
Waiting for GW's AoS to explore the Realms of Shadows, which would very likely come along with the release of fantastic models, competing with Ragin Heroes. No intention to buy, but sometimes you don't keep with your intentions, do you?

Here are my WFB-related plans for 2016 - in no particular order;

Get our old gaming group back together and get a few games under our belts. Right now we'll be playing 6th or 7th edition rules. The Skaven guy still has all his army. I still have my Druchii as well as my VC and Slaanesh Daemons (With the notable exception of one classic conversion that I did back in 2005). Our Goblin and TK players are still in the circle of friends, and their armies are still in storage, so it's just possible we could have a sort of "gaming reunion" with the intention of revitalising interest in, and keeping WFB alive now that GW have tried to destroy it. I'm pretty sure getting them back to play a few games won't be an issue. Getting them to give money to GW for new stuff might be a higher mountain to climb, but then there are alternatives to GW...

Finish writing up the army lists I devised almost ten years ago - namely the Drow, Illithids, Southlands Tribes and a few others. I had some amazing ideas for Tilea the other day too...

Get hold of the cool Slaaneshi models that I don't already posess (preferably cheap on ebay) before GW, in their infinite stupidity, stop producing any more of them. (Thinking hellseeker chariots especially - and find a way to be able to swap out parts so I can build all three variants of the kits - along with a few of my own devising) I'm not worried about getting hold of Slaanesh-friendly miniatures in the post-GW future, as all the other mini companies produce wide ranges of the kind of stuff that would fit in nicely with my Slaanesh army. I also hope to develop my sculpting skills to the point where I can scratchbuild my own stuff (monsters and mounts at least, if not the actual figures - the more stuff I can make myself, the less money I have to give to GW, and the less that GW get out of me, the better I feel...)

Further develop my 3D modeling skills so that I can design stuff such as terrain pieces that can be produced on a 3D printer (the idea being to create the basic shape by 3D printing, then dress the surface with mixed media in order to make it look good).

Finish my DE army (I still have a few units unpainted, some of which have been converted from old HE minis - finally coming over to the right side  - and I guess I'll need a new Cauldron and some of the new super-sexy witch elves) as well as assembling, converting and painting a whole load of Slaanesh minis that have been languishing in my bits box for years (mostly plastic and metal daemonettes but a few others too).

And probably a bunch of other stuff I've forgotten to mention :)

My 2016 plans

IN 2015 I started playing WFB for the first time but I did so weekly and became addicted to this great game. Especially infantry lists is what I fielded last year with great fun and pleasure. 2016 is going to be cavarly themed forces for me :D I will continue painting my army, and hope to build an Assassins Creed themed tournament force (lots of dark riders and shades).

Although the forum is indeed very quiet, I expect it to rise again when 9th is stabilized which it will, until now they have given what they promised, even better than I expected. The games of 9th I played were all great games, and as soon more 9th tournaments will come up, more gaming and painting will happen.

I'd love to re-start an army painting challenge like the one of last year again. It was great to see armies evolve and learn from them.

PS. I also can't wait for the new fluff, the Dark Elf army books and the fluff inside is what gave this hobby so much extra depth.

In no particular order:

Get all the DE and Chaos minis I already own fully painted and based.

Repaint some of my 'older' (c.2002) DE minis to match the colour scheme of my 'newer' (c.2004) ones. This is mostly a matter of changing all the plate armour from dark bronze (Tin Bitz and Dwarf Bronze) to a red-lacquered appearance (Mithril Silver washed with black ink and then glazed with a mix of purple and red inks).

Finish the story of how my DEs ended up in the Age of Sigmar setting. And by 'finish', I mean 'write the other 29/30ths or so'.

Get some of the new (to me!) DE models (witch elves and corsairs mostly) and paint them.

Try out some of the conversion ideas I've had recently (e.g. turning Crocodile Games' Basti skirmisher models into Arabian-Nights-themed Slaanesh marauders/cultists).

Try out an actual game of AoS.

This time last year I was looking for 2015 to be about getting my army sorted, painted and to have a few games. Sadly we all know what happened to WFB and this meant that my plans went out of the window.

The only thing I want to do for my Dark Elves this year is to finally get around to constructing and painting my Dragon. Sadly, this has to fit around my 40k stuff...

I'm taking the opportunity of the lull in Dark Elf/Exiled Aelf releases and fluff to actually start painting and modelling units and terrain.

I've also started dabbling in Malifaux, although I think that will remain more of an interest than a genuine pursuit. I'm having trouble getting WFB or AOS games in my area, but this might be due more to my lack of free time and having moved cities recently than to a genuine lack of gamers nearby.

On a side note: heretical as it sounds, I really don't mind AOS as a game, as long as no-one brings the über-characters (currently including Nagash, Archaon and the Celestant-Prime) or plays WAAC. In other words, I enjoy it as a fun game with some tactical depth and limited rules-mongering, not as a competitive game where people are abusing RAW to win. I'll have 9th Age and KOW for more cerebral gaming, if and when I want it. Between work and parenting, I don't need more stress.

If possible, I'll try to do some fluff writing for AOS and/or the end of the End Times (i.e. how my armies came to be in the Mortal Realms). However, most of my writing time is going towards a novel (bring on NaNoWriMo if I haven't completed it by then).

I don't do "resolutions", but my intent is to start and finish 2 Blood Bowl teams (Chaos and Amazon), and for my Dark Elf Army, a unit of Witch Elves, so I can put some more of my older ones on eBay.

I am waiting for the new Blood bowl eagerly. Enjoyed it first time round so the new models and rules may actually get me purchasing from GW again.

*Assuming people know about Blood bowl and specialist games being revived by the guys at Forgeworld?

I'm actually dreading it. I get that the game will eventually die without new blood, but at the same time I don't trust GW to do right by it either. They can make all the new minis they want - I probably won't buy them because they'll be overpriced and I don't need them anyway. But the rules have been honed to the closest thing there is to perfection, I really don't want them thinking they need to make a new edition of the rules.

Hopefully I'm wrong.

I was just thinking about opening a thread for this topic and Daeron beat me to it.

Last year was a challenging year for me hobby wise. I was disappointed that I did not get my Armies on Parade board finished with my Corsair themed army. I also did not get the ship finished either, lost momentum after a while. I also have some great ideas for a couple of new armies I have been planning for this year but reluctant to start them without finishing my current projects.

Plans for early this year includes finishing the ship, I have started working on it again the past couple of weeks and it's now progressing to a painted stage. There is also a block of 40 spearmen and another 10 Corsairs to complete for the army - I think this should tie me up for the next 3 months. Will think about some sort of display board for them once they are done.

I also have a new army I hope to look at later in the year with a Slaanesh twist and Ghrond themed army.

I have no interest in GW anymore or AoS, perhaps the new Aelf release might change that but I will wait and see - their pricing is just getting out of control.

9th Age looks promising - I plan to spend some more time looking into it, hopefully have some creative input to the new army books.

I have also been working on a game system adhock that I would like to put some more time into progressing.

Hopefully DNet stays alive and kicking so I can continue to contribute to this great community.
