Topic of the Week - Boxed games

Greetings everyone,

Boxed games seem to be GW's staple to "the big ones". HeroQuest, Warhammer Quest, Space Quest/Hulk, Gorechosen... And of course, the almighty bloodbowl! The list seems to go on forever, and they don't stop making new ones. Personally, I think the concept is great, and my biggest remark would be that they release faster than I can/want-to afford.
But they're probably not the only company to do this. Mantic is more than just Kings of War.

So I wanted to talk about miniature board games, or simply smaller, boxed games. Do you enjoy expanding on the wargaming experience with boxed games? Do you prefer the miniatures to cross-over into the wargaming armies? Or are you just as happy to have a completely separate model line?
How important is the connection between the boxed game and the tabletop game you play?
Be sure to mention your favourite, but by all means... don't stop there.

My old time favourite was HeroQuest and is what got me into this hobby! I spent hours playing that game with my brother and friends when I was a kid, there was something in it that grabbed my imagination. This is an interesting question I'm keen to see what others think. I have spent a huge amount of time recently over the past 18 months designing my own board game for release. It's amazing just how much time can go into building and explaining a rule set, design of the game pieces etc - sometimes I wonder if it is a worth while investment for probably little return (aprat from the joy of making it)

Back in the day we used to play Warhammer quest a lot! The story and scenario designing next to the normal scenario's was what kept us going. Tbh though thats my only experience with boxed sets cross overs (playing Totalwar WH, bloodbowl and mordheim, the odd game of space marine and dawn of war, but video games dont really count) so i googled it and came across this ;

Is it a really a good way to get in to 40k? playing small sqaudrons mind you, because it wont be more then 3 to 4 times a yea. I started reading the fluff and it is awesome, i wouldnt mind to play a game every once in a while. But what do you really need for a fun game of 40k ? and does this set provide it?

I have to say: BLOODBOWL!!!!!!!

I'm quite happy (and a bit nervous) that GW resurrected this old favorite of mine.
Nonetheless I never stopped playing, thanks to the NAF.
Now I'm a loyal disciple of the NAF, and I must admit that I find the (luckily few) new rules that GW introduced, quite annoying for their lack of balance (and playtest)

Burning of Prospero is not 40K. It's set during the Horus Heresy 10,000 years earlier, but uses its own ruleset (i.e. not Forgeworld's 30K/HH rules). It will give you some cool minis you can certainly use to start a Space Marine army for 40K, but it won't make learning the 40K rules any easier. IIRC, Dark Vengeance is the only boxed game GW currently sells that actually uses the 40K rules.

But you'd be best waiting for the new edition and its starter set, IMO.

ah thanks,

And here i was thinking the horus heresy would use the same(ish) rules as 40k, more like a scenario.
To bad, the story seems interesting enough.

Actually, Horus Heresy uses the same rules as 40k. The boxed games are entirely different games, with their own rules. I haven't been able to play the Burning of Prospero game, but I can recommend the Betrayal at Calth. Really nice mechanics and the kind of "easy to learn, hard to master" rules that I have been able to get some of my boardgamer friends to play.

If you want to play 30k, it is much like 40k but everyone is in power armor and the scenarios are better.
I can recommend that too :)

Man o War was pretty good back in the day. When Dreadfleet came along I was thinking maybe it would be a similar sort of thing but in fact turned out to be quite a bit different and ultimately not as much fun, despite some truly beautiful miniatures. The worst thing (IMO) about the specialist games range is the apalling lack of support for them from GW, along with their short lifespan (Although Mordheim and Bloodbowl seem to still be popular, as does Necromunda, if a bunch of Youtube channels are to be believed.

Having said that, it's always fun to see new ones being released.

I just recently got involved in tabletop Blood Bowl but Im in love with it! I have an orc team painted up and have about 5 games under my belt now. I love the smaller games, what ever it may be, that I can play in about 2 hours. As someone mentioned earlier, the hardest part is finding the time so smaller games suit my needs right now.
