I have been designing a new game for quite some time now and I'm stuck on an icon for the game dice - in particular for Mana.

There are three icons on the dice for attack, defence and mana. I am happy with two of the icons, a Sword for Attack and Shield for defence but I am still very undecided what to have for Mana.

Here is a description of what I am trying to represent with the icon.

"Mana is a supernatural force that dwells in each living being. A characters total mana stat indicates its intellect and state of mind, also how much its psyche can suffer wounds in battle before being defeated. A high mana stat is desirable for characters who choose a mage or priest profession as it enhances many of their abilities."

Below is a photo of some concepts I have come up with numbered from one to seven. Also the two other icons that are locked in. I have also included a photo of a prototype dice I had made. The black area in the design is what will be laser etched out of the dice.

Hmm - I came up with another idea which I'm now quite fond of.

Actually I like better the variant drawn on the dice than the closest one, 2. It draws a cerebral question mark ending in the backbone, great effect.

Between 1, 2, 5, 7, female profile works better than male, and than frontal silhouette.
4 has its charm, one being the pun: mana being close to mano, which means hand in Spanish and Italian.
6 works well as being so simple, but does not reflect as well as 1,2,5,7 the words intellect, mind and psyche.

I like your idea -- fire + spiral = great cypher for subtle life force

Also check out the New Zealand Maori Koru-style designs (which represent mana in their worldview).
