6th Edition; Highborn on Black Dragon?

Hey guys, I am looking to build a Dark Elf Fantasy Army as I absolutely love the aesthetics. The community where I am still plays occasional 6th edition fantasy battles where I understand the Dark Elves are considered a consensus weakest choice. I am little concerned about building a list that works enough to give me a fighting chance in the game.

Before I submit a list for consideration, I have two questions:
First, is the cauldron of blood too powerful to forgo, or can I safely go with a War Hydra and repeater bolt throwers?

Second, is a highborn on black dragon (466 pts) too much of a point sink at 2000 points?

Hi, Quilic Tivrael, and welcome to D.net. :D

6th edition initial DE were weak indeed, but Storm of Chaos campaign brought the Cult of Slaanesh supplement.
See the pdf here: http://rosters.mysteria.cz/ostatni/down ... aanesh.pdf
Do download it, it was fully official, and it included magic items available to all DE armies, not only CoS.

In 6th edition, DE players developed the MSU playstyle, i.e. Many Small Units.
The art of war was to coordinate the charge of several small units, with the idea to get the charge and melt down anything touched by the charging units before the opponent could strike back.

For tactics, read:

The way to look at playing DE in 6E is that you're really going to earn your victories, and losing really isn't a big deal because the book really is that bad.

Thanks so much for the link, a huge amount of invaluable info! I've already managed to pick up lots of little tricks through reading the various links.

It looks like a dragon would have been a huge fire magnet versus anything with cannons and the like. The Cauldron doesn't seem necessary for a competitive list and neither are the repeater bolt throwers I was going to use.

I think my list will focus on magic and maneuverability instead of shooting. Currently trying to decide whether its best to field 2x level 2 sorceress or a high sorc and 2x level 1s.

I had no idea that Dark Elves could ally with Slaanesh, that's awesome and it's good to know that my old metal Daemonettes have a new place now!

Does this mean that an Annointed can take Albion reward items? I'm seeing a weird configuration of an Annointed that needs four books to play in my future... !lol!
