RTT WESTERN AUSTRALIA

Post by Dantrag »

After reading a couple of battle reports and one inparticular about another tournament inspired me to post these results. Those whoe read this straight away will have to wait a week for the results. The RTT is on the 28th and 29th of sept 2002 with 6 games over 2 days.

This is the army i will be fielding (those AD&D nutters may recognise the names...)-

LORDS & HEROS -
Gromphe Banrae (LVL4 sorcorer) with darkstar cloak, crown of black iron
Dantraag Banrae (assassin) 2 swords, manbane, rune of khaine
Berginyon Banrae (noble) lance, HA, SDC, shield, CO, biting blade seal of ghrond
CORE
20 corsairs with full command and banner of murder
20 corsairs with full command
5 driders (dark riders) with standard & muscican
10 RXB warriors with standard and muscician
SPECIAL
9 COK with full command
6 shades
RARE
1 Warhydra

As you can see its an assault army for close in fighting. I have won the last couple of battles played with this army so i hope my luck holds.
With 36 players the armies are not as varied as you might think -
8 VC (3 blood dragon, 3 voncastien, 1 necrach, 1 necromancer only)
7 DRUCHII  (including myself)
5 HE (BOOO HISSSS!!!)
5 Dwarf
4 Empire
1 Bretonian
1 Skaven
4 Chaos
1 O&G
As you can see we are well represented - i hope i do well. While you wait for the results - What do you think of the army?

Greetings,

I won't pretend to be seriously critiquing your array, but at first glance it appears to be well balanced and quite able to achieve a good result.

I AM very impressed with your obvious inspiration: I take it that the army is painted as Drow as well? It would look soooo good!

Interesting mix of armies there. I'm running a WHFB tournament at MOAB on 5 - 7 October. It will be about the same size, and I have already received about half of the expected army lists.

To date, we have:
2 DRUCHII
2 Dwarves
1 Tzeentch Warrior
1 Khorne Warrior
1 Nurgle Warrior
1 Nurgle Daemon
1 Blood Dragon Vampire
1 Necrarch Vampire
1 Lahmian Vampire
1 Goblin
1 Skaven
1 High Elf
1 Wood Elf
1 Chaos Dwarf
1 Lizardman
1 Dogs of War.

One player who has nominated but not yet sent me his list is a dead cert Bretonnian; but that still leaves Khemri; Beastmen & both (shockhorrorsurprise!) the Empire and Orcs languishing with no representatives (as yet). Army lists have to be in to me by Thursday 26 Sep, btw.

I've never seen such an even spread across the racial spectrum at any prev event. Nor so comparatively few Imperial or Greenskum armies!

Good Hunting - I look forward very much to your forthcoming tales!

Thanks for the compliments - Yes it is painted as a drow force with white hair, red eyes and black skin. It fields the famous Banrae Lizard Riders and an underdark scout patrol (shades). I always picture Drow with 2 weapons so the core had to be corsairs. The RXB are the peasants of the house and the driders are just cool conversions! Following is my army story for a bit of background...
(sorry its a bit long)

DARK ELVES - HOUSE BANRAE

Greetings my weary traveller, you took your time getting here. My name is Jarlaxale and I will be your guide. The camp of House Banrae is just around this ravine corner. Here - you should wear this, the cloak will hide you from the sharp eyes of the Banrae Shades.

There! Your can see the camp now but beware - should they capture us I fear your life would be forfeit. Me? House Banrae use my services like any of the other Black Elf Houses and so I have no fear from them. Follow me and keep quiet. I will guide you through their forces.

Firstly we have already passed the Banrae Shades. The weapon master of
Banrae trains these Black Elves for stealth and assassination. They are keen eyed and sharp eared. That cloak you wear is the only reason you made it past them. Even now they sense something is amiss and hunt us, I hope you covered your foot prints.

In front of us are the common warriors of House Banrae. They carry the famed Dark Elf repeater crossbow into battle and provide long range support to their more combat skilled brethren.

To the left of the warriors you can see the corsair legions. These elite
infantry form the mainstay of the House Banrae infantry and are trained in combat by the house weapon master. Skilled at fighting with 2 weapons and cloaked with the hides of subterranean lizards they are a fearsome force to be reckoned with.

On the right of the warriors you can see home of the Driders. This huge
steel casket holds these crazed creatures. Half Black Elf, half giant spider
these monstrous beings are used by House Banrae for harassing the enemies flanks. While not individually strong, their bulk and horrific visage can be enough to break even the bravest or stupidest of enemies.

Hold where you are! Did you here that? That roar came from Gromphes pet War Hydra. A monstrous creature with 5 heads. Its teeth - as long as daggers, its scaled hide - thick and strong. Its fiery breath and fearsome heads can utterly destroy nearly any enemy. Gromphe? I will tell you of him later.

Ahead of us you can see the holding pens of the cold ones. These mounts are ridden into battle by the famed Banrae Lizard Riders. These warriors are the lesser nobles from the house and a charge from these elite cavalry will send any enemy fleeing for their lives!

Now we come to the leaders of this force - The true nobles of House Banrae. Matron Banrae would not risk her daughters so she has sent her 3 sons. Yes her sons. Black Elves are a purely matriarchal society so males are inferior to females. Having her sons lead this force means less of a risk to Matron Banraes political power, though losing her weapon master, master of knights and arch mage would be a blow to the houses strength.

The youngest of the 3 brothers you can see moving towards the cold ones. His name is Berginyon Banrae and he is the master of knights. He leads the famed Banrae Lizard Riders into battle and his skill at arms is matched only by his older brother and house weapon master Dantraag.

The second brother is Dantraag Banrae, house weapon master and assassin supreme. He walks amongst the corsairs as we speak though you probably will not see him. It is he who trains the Banrae warriors with weapons and it is widely held that he is the most skilled of all Black Elves in the arts of war. He is supremely confident of his own abilities and believes he can overcome any opponent. Perhaps he is right, the only Black Elf in this camp who is stronger is his older brother Gromphe.

We will be lucky to see the reclusive Gromphe Banrae, the oldest of the 3
brothers and archmage of House Banrae. A male sorcerer? Yes, what of it? Ahhh I understand now. The Witch Kings edict that only females may learn the dark arts - interesting a non Dark Elf knows that little fact. But back to Gromphe - A curious quirk of the Black Elves means that the males are more adept at wielding these dark forces and for the moment the Witch King ignores this breach. Which leads us to the most powerful of all Black Elf mages - Gromphe. Supremely skilled and ultimately powerful, Gromphe is said to be able to kill with but a single word. Pray he never lays eye on anyone you care for.

Wait. what's that. ahhh we may have a problem. The shades have caught our scent. Escape? Yes you are right, I must take flight. If I were to be caught my reputation we be tarnished. You? What about you? I have done as asked and shown you House Banraes forces. That is what you paid for. You should have been more specific about the deal my friend, you never asked to be escorted away from the camp. well I best be going.
Good luck..you will need it..

Great background!!! That is an excellent and original way to present the fluff for your army("You? What about you?" LOL), I might just have to 'borrow' it for one of my future armies.

GAME 1 - VS Dark Elves??? (Meeting Engagment)

The enemy -
1 LVL 4 high sorcoress
1 LVL 2 sorcoress
1 LVL 1 sorcoress
1 Noble on cold one with hydra banner
9 COK
20 Witch Elves
10 Corsairs
2 Units of 5 DR

This was a new one on me - a civil war. With the witchelves behind my lines in turn 1 thanks to unseen lurker things looked dodgy. I managed to turn the tide with a well timed double charge with my hydra and COK. My sorcorer however managed to panic when the witchelves killed my RXB and fled off the table!! not good when the enemy has so many mages! I still managed to claw my way back thanks to the hydra and shades - the hydra was instremental in destroying the WE killing 10 with a breath attack then willing 6 more in combat and running them down. The shades assassinated both minor sorcoressess and even wounded the High sorc but i ran out of turns to finish the job.
RESULT - 1900vp to 1419vp - MINOR VICTORY (12 Tourney points)
NEXT GAME - Bretonnia

GAME 2 - Bretonnia (Pitched Battle)

The enemy -
10 knights errant
9 knights realm (with LVL 2 Damsel)
8 Knights Grail (with BSB and Damsel)
Lord on Hippogriff
10 Bowmen
10 Men at ARms with spears
Paladin on Pegasus

This game looked bad from the get go. It turned out i was wrong. After underestimating my hydra (the second of many for the weekend...) and having his hippogriff eaten as well as the errant knights being butchered to a man thanks to the banner of murder and an assassin thngs looked pretty good. The hydra died when the grail charged its flank but it lived long enough for my COK to interseed and not only eventually kill his general (now on foot) but also break the grail!! This i feel was pretty text book stuff. He underestimated my DE and payed for it. I was charging and choosing who and how to fight. My RXB even managed to kill the pegasus in HTH the run down the paladin - Yeah!! This game was all Druchii.
RESULT - 2800vp vs 591vp - Massacre!!!!

GAME 3 - Lamia Vampire Counts (Capture)

The Enemy -
Lamia Vampire Countess
Mounted Wight Lord
2 Necromancers
2 units of 15 Dire wolves
7 Wight Cavalry
2 units of 18 Skeletons (each with a necromancer)
19 Grave Guard (with the above vampire)
15 Ghouls

Thhis game used a modified capture scenario. The VP chart was used and whoever held the objective at the end of the game would score VP equal to the unit holding it. With that in mind i wanted that objective! The objective was a tower and in my turn 1 the first skeleton unit was charged by my COK. They were sitting under the objective and that was in my way. After 10 kills the combat res was 11 which left 1 worried necromancer all alone. The vampires charged my COK in the left flank with the Wight cav and the right with the grave guard (the vampire wasnt in combat) and though i lost by 1 the COK held. Time for a counter charge. The hydra hit the wight cav in the flank and my assassin/corsair unit hit the grave guard in the flank. The lamia declined a challenge from my assassin (i think it cost him the combat) and with my COK, Hydra, Corsairs and assassin attacking i won the combat by a whopping 13!! Every undead model characters and all died in that display of druchii power!!. The rest of the enemy was mopped up by my remaining unit with the corsairs seeing of the ghouls and remaining skeletons while the dire wolves were killed by mt driders and RXB in HTH!!

RESULT - 3480vp vs 0vp MASSACRE!!! my best win ever

GAME 4 - Voncarstien Vampire Counts (pitched battle)

The enemy -
Voncarstien Vampire Count with 20 grave guard
Mounted Wight Lord BSB with 9 wight cavalry
2 necromancers
2 units of 8 dire wolves
18 skeletons
3 bases of spirit hosts (How i hate these now!!)
20 Zombies

This game went all my way with but a couple of exceptions. The hydra was killed by spirit hosts and my sorcorer lord was killed turn 6 by an irresistable gaze of nagash inflicting 11 hits!! My highlights however were many including the vampire accepting a challenge from my assassin and getting killed outright!! (whever said assassins suck is so wrong!) With only the necromancers on the table end of turn 6 and about half my army intact i had won.
RESULT - 2442vp vs 1510vp Major Victory (17 tourney points)
NEXT GAME - Empire

Game 5 - The Empire (capture)

The Enemy -
STEAM TANK!!! :x
Lord on Griffon
8 Inner Circle Knights
2 Mortars
1 Helblaster
1 Great Cannon
20 Spear Men
10 Halberd Warriors
27 Hand Gunners
Engineer with Hochland rifle.

Just from reading the enemy list you should all realise i was in trouble. It was day 2 and i thought i was seeing things that early in the morning. The mental effect that tank has is staggering and while i had some real high points i never stood a chance of capturing the obgective once it got there so it earned 300vp right from turn 2. The army itself was simply their to win and in the end of the tourney he scored second last for selection and sportsmanship. I managed a stiff resistance and in a pitched battle i would have scored a minor loss.Ahhhh.... i think the less said the better :(
RESULT - 1145vp vs 1806vp Major Loss :( (6 tourney points)

GAME 6 - Calador High Elves (Meeting Engagment)

The Enemy -
7 Dragon Princes with Hero
8 Silver Helms
20 Spearmen
19 Spearmen with hero (general)
2 RBT
2 Giant Eagles
12 Seaguard
Chariot with hero

Before i say anything this guy not only won the tourney but the army was amazing. The seaguard all were converted with dragon helms, the giant eagles were baby dragon models from warmaster and the painting was stunning. He also has no magic  . The RBT were killed quickly by my shades with no kills for them!! I had no idea HE Spears were as hard as they were!! I routed the Dragon princes with COK but he killed my hydra (with spears!). In the end we had a draw and i cant say i am upset after the last game! He failed 3 fear checks in a row to charge my COK and 2 terror against my hydra. Of the 15 LD tests the HE made in that game he only passed 3!!! Now thats cool.
RESULTS - 1333vp vs 1530 Draw (12 tourney points)
NEXT GAME - High Elves

GAME 7 - High Elves (Pitched Battle)

The enemy -
2 Giant Eagles
7 Silverhelms with hero
19 Whitelions with hero (general)
2 units of 16 spearmen
2 Lvl 2 Mages
1 Chariot
8 reaver Knights
1 RBT

With the last game for the tourney now on me i was in high spirits. With the death of both enemy mages to RXB fire from shades and warriors in turn 1 and the RBT in turn 2 my spirits soared. Unfortunatly the dice are fickle and taught me a lesson. Of the 6 turns of magic i miscast 4 times each with only 2 dice!!! I got 1 spell of for the whole game (doom bolt at the chariot) The other problem i had was the final turn. My shades were charged by spearmen in turn 5. I decided to run reasoning i would rally as i was LD 9 (12inches of general). I was wrong. Not only did it panic the hydra but both units failed to rally turn 6 costing my about 300vp!! To top it off the chariot charged my sorcorer in turn 5 and i guessed if i could roll about an 8 flee i would escape. Roll a 4 and cost me another 300vp. Well atleast i kicked the White lions. Another draw.
RESULTS - 1175vp vs 1002vp Draw (10 tourney points)

Well with third place under my belt i am really happy with the armies overall performance. I was only beaten by a very cheesy empire army and the draws i believe i could have turned into wins so i guess my army is fairly well balanced. As a side note that steam tank was only killed twice in 7 games. Once by Dwarf Slayers!!! who caused enough damage for it to blow when it tried to generate steam and once by skaven with 2 warp cannons and 8 jezzails!! My advice to other druchii generals is avoid it and kill everything else. The soft man things die quickly to our blades. I hope you enjoyed reading my little series of games. I learnt alot about other armies and had a ball. Cheers

First of all, congratulations! I'm glad you had such a great time playing with the DE, and I'll be glad to inform the Witch King of your deeds, noble Banrae (it was Baenre in the AD&D books, wasn't it?). :)

Now, one thing that caught my attention; about the equipment of Berg'inyon Banrae, since he has a magic weapon (biting blade), he could not be allowed a lance, as the rules stand now, or can he have both a normal weapon and a magic weapon?
Watch your steps, my friend, for your way up is almost as fast as your way down, at the whim of the Witch King

Hey very well done indeed!!!!

This is very encouraging for my army list so I hope I will be posting a favourable series of reports myself in about a month's time. There are 200 players in the GT though.

Love the story telling and may borrow a few of your lines if I may. I too love the "What about you?"

You mean i wasted 4 points on a lance (i forgot to use anyway!) oh well... Yeurl yep all my characters (and army selection) are based of TSR dark elves but by changing the names a little in the spelling it makes them my own (and as long as unpublished immune to copyright!)

Well done, General. Even though I am no friend of the Drow Colour scheme I greatly appreciate your background idea (and would especially like to see your drider conversions). I think that Empire army was unbeatable by any real army and is the absolute best example for empire cheese I've ever seen.
I myself will probably face a steam tank several times in the near future and have no idea how to deal with it aside from the Highborn/Gauntlet of Power COmbo. This thing is so broken it should only appear in pieces on the battle field.
Keep up the good work!

Great job!!!

I think that is the best string of results I have ever seen from a player (with possible exception of Baron DeSade before his recent little run of losses).
