Large target and shooting.

Large target and shooting.
I played a game some days ago.
Chaos Mortals Vs Ogres and at some point this is what happened.
My opponent moved a unit of 20 Gnoblars near my Chaos lord on dragon
and said that he would shoot at him with all 4 ranks because he is a large target.
I argued that Vs large targets you get to shoot with an additional rank ONLY
like when shooting from atop a hill.
People gathered around , a big fuss started and we ended up rolling for it.
I lost so he rolled 40 dices at me...(double shots at 8'')
Can you beleieve it ..... my Lord (tzeentch) had a 2+ Armour save and a 3+
ward save and he still managed to inflict a wound
Anyway i had a unit of chosen chaos Knights obliterate the Gnoblars because of the insult ... but i used a 300Pts unit only to get 40Pts out of it.
So the Q is obvious.
With how many ranks can somebody shoot at large targets?

I have always thought that it was just the additional ONE ranks, giving two ranks in total shooting. If your opponent wantd more Gnoblars shooting he would have had to move them into two ranks in order for them to all target your Chaos Lord legaly.
Edit: Looks like I was wrong, opps.

Want some tips on controlling those frenzied units? http://www.druchii.net/viewtopic.php?t=71791&highlight=
the only thing that restricts models in units from shooting in more then one rank is LoS, since you can draw LoS to large targets over other units (and in this case models) all 4 ranks have LoS to the large target and can shoot
also note this works the same for hills, if shooting at a target on a hill, the whole unit can see, and as such shoot at it

Hrm, I had always assumed shooting at a large target was two ranks, just like hills (pg 26 of your rule book under "Missle fire from hills"). Though I can't seem to find any reference in the rule book (did they take it out from the previous editions?)
I will live till the end of this world, and if this world does not come to and end. I will destroy it with my own two hands.

Somewhere in the book, I think where they are discussing hills in the terrain section, talks about how 'the back ranks' of a unit looking up at a hill can see. So, looking down you get an extra rank only, but looking up you get them all.
Don't have the book with me, so I can't give a page reference--sorry.

BRB, p26, First paragraph of the Missle Fire From Hills states a unit can fire with ONE additional rank if possessed of an elevation advantage
BRB p28, outlines large target, other than the plus one to hit, there is no stated rules in this section that deals with multiple ranks being allowed to shoot at Large Targets. Same for Page 60, Shooting at Monsterous Mounts, where the bonus to hit is again mentioned but no comment about Ranks
At present I can find no rule that allows multiple ranks to shoot at large targets, though if one is out there that is official and not just a House Rule, please let me know cause I'm missing it.
Griefbringer: The BRB mentions the Unit on the Hill can be seen over other units in regards to LOS, (p26) but I found nothing that allows rear ranks to shoot uphill either.

Its under page 9 in the interposing models section. All ranks (even the back) can fire at a large target or a unit that's on a hill (that part is in the hills and elevated positions section). Kind of sucks for the hill positions where you only get two ranks to fire down and everybody else gets all their ranks to shoot back up.

Thanks Vorchild, I had missed that..
Interesting page 8 paragraph 6 & 7. I had not really looked this close at this before, as the times I've used hills it was for my RBTs and not my rxb troops which are usually down in the thick of things.
Hrmm something to consider. Thanks again for the correction.
