Bolt Thrower Armour Save Modifier

Post by Toole »

Just a quickie here - the new bolt thrower rules say that when you fire a volley of shots there is a -2 armour save modifier. Is this including the fact that the shots are strength four or is the total modifier -3?

The total modifier is -2, just like the book says.

It's S4 with an additional -1 in modifier.

Minsc is correct. It is a total modifier of -2.

SERIOUSLY!?!?!?!

me and friends have been playing with -3 modifier, using the -2 from what the book says and adding is STR 4.

hahaha. wow, it got worse for RBT users and better for non users.

good question

Yeah, it is sort of confusing, since they don't just say Strength 4, armour piercing, which would be much clearer. There is an argument to be made that in fact it causes a -2 armour save in addition to being strength 4 (for example, it would explain why they say -2 armour save instead of just saying that it is armour piercing), but 6th edition had similar wording, and in 6th it was definitely just a total of a -2 armour save.

S4 armor piercing is essentially what it is as it yields a total -2 AS modifier. It cetainly could have been changed in the new book to be consistent with the way the AP rule is worded in the rest of the book.

People play all kind of things all different ways. Some people were playing that it suffered a multi-shot penalty. They at least made that issue go away in the new book.

the only reason i can think of as to why they didn't just give it that armor piercing rule, is so it would not have the increased effect of the rain lord spell hitting it (as thats designed for black powder weapons)

It says "Armour saves suffering a -2 penalty" - it doesn't say "in addition to" the normal -1 or anything similar. When the enemy takes a save, it's at -2.
