Warcraft III images

Post by Sneaky »

It has come to the attention of the moderators that a number of users have images taken from Warcraft III in their signatures or as their avatars. There is a size limit of 10K for signature images anyway, but I want to stress in particular that using these copyrighted images is not allowed, even if under 10K. Blizzard has gone on record as saying that they do NOT condone such breaches of their copyrighted intellectual property.

If we see any Warcraft or any other such copyrighted material in signatures or avatars, we will remove them.
Goodbye.

Well, being as it's their material, I don't blame them.

I'll just be changing my avatar then.

On Blizzard's own site's legal department ( http://www.blizzard.co.uk/legalfaq.shtml ) you can read the following (among other useful information):

What is Blizzard Entertainment's® copyright / trademark policy for the Internet, specifically for fan sites? Can I use Blizzard Entertainment's® images, text or sound on my web page? Is it ok if I use screenshots I take in-game on my web page?

Yes, within certain limits. We asked our legal department to provide some guidelines for you, and here is what they said:

Blizzard Entertainment® hereby grants you a personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable and non- assignable license to use and display, for home, noncommercial and personal use only, one copy of any material and/or software that you may download from this site, including, but not limited to, any files, codes, audio or images incorporated in or generated by the software (collectively the "Downloaded Content") provided, however, that you must include or maintain all copyright and other notices contained or associated with such Downloaded Content. You acknowledge and agree that you may not sublicense, assign or otherwise transfer this license or the Downloaded Content and that no title to the Downloaded Content has been or will be transferred to you from Blizzard Entertainment® or anyone else. You also agree that you will not alter, disassemble, decompile, reverse engineer or otherwise modify the Downloaded Content.

Also, we reserve the right to revoke this limited use license at any time, for any reason, and at the sole discretion of Blizzard Entertainment®. You may not use our materials on sites that feature defamatory pornographic, or inflammatory content, including, but not limited to, hacks and cheats for any of our games or any other content that Blizzard Entertainment® find objectionable or unlawful.

Then you can as well prohibit usage of someone's art or characters from movies, anime and so on in avatars... I see no copyright violation in using downloaded materials as avatars (this is the same as downloading and using wallpapers from the offcial site).

Your avatar might be ok, but I don't think the admins will aprove your image in your signature. It is far too big (both bytes-wise and estetics).

Agreed on the signature image. I think the BSD Daemon is acceptable unless Red Hat copyrighted that. I doubt it, though, since Linux itself isn't copyrighted.

Actually. The use of the avatars is valid, since they are not made by Blizzard, rather by an unrelated tactics site.
And using pics as avatars is not brech of copyright, thats like saying putting a picture of a certain make of car on your wall is breaching copyright.

If you took the image of the car make from their website and thus did not pay any money for it, yes that is aganst copyright.
As you can read in the quote I posted (or at least on the page I liked to), all images taken from Blizzard's site is ok to use, if you also include
"©2002 Blizzard Entertainment. All rights reserved. Reign of Chaos is a trademark and Warcraft and Blizzard Entertainment are trademarks or registered trademarks of Blizzard Entertainment in the U.S. and/or other countries."

Yes.
But you look at all the other sites out there, many members use the images.
I haven't seen Blizzard actually DO something about it.
It IS a bit petty dont you think? I think in fact they are talking about people who are using them in flash animations and as 3d models for home made games, mods etc.

What members of other sites do can't be our problem. Here on Druchii.net we have a rule against Blizzard Copyrighted images, we try to follow a thing called "the law". We don't care if people on other sites don't give a damn about the law.

I am simply commenting on Blizzard's policy.
Not the sites policy.
