Army Builder

Post by Alux »

I have recently discovered the following site for Army Building.
http://www.wolflair.com/
Used the demo and it seemed pretty nifty. Would certainly make putting my early DE lists together easier.
Has anyone used it and if so what do you think?

I personally think the program is excellent for constructing lists and the like, but it isn't a substitute for the real books and a piece of paper (or a calculator for those amongst us who are lazy ;) ). It allows you to cobble hair-brained lists together in next to no time, but the full program is rather expensve if that is all you intend to do.

Another advantage, and what made me buy it, is that you can use it for multiple games systems (BFG, WHFB, Mordheim and 40K in my case), allowing you to have ready-built lists that can be printed off as required

However the new version (3.1c or somesuch) isn't fully updated for WFB, and the like, for some reason. It seems to currently rely on the work of fans to produce the data files for it, and many of these have small errors .... however it only takes a few minutes with the editor (ABCreator) to iron these out, if you enjoy that sort of thing.
- The Black Host (Druchii) - 47/17/5
- Shamblin' Horde (VC) - 9/2/2

Working on - 10k of Druchii (Done) / 3k of Vampires (250 left to go) / 12k of Tau (Done)

So you can make 40k lists with Army Builder? I logged in because I wanted to ask this very question but now it seems I'll just hijack your topic, Alux :D ;) Apologizes in advance!

Oh, and are there any other options for 40k builder?

yes you can make 40k army lists with it. and gothic, and bb and tons of other games.

It does have lots of errors in it though so always check against your army book/codex.

IMHO Army Builder is great! I stumped up for the full version and haven't been disappointed. Some Luddites:-) prefer the good ole pencil and paper method but I'm not one of them. I find it easy to use and the printouts are really useful for gaming, nice and clear. Much better than a crumpled bit of paper with indecipherable chicken scratchings in pencil/pen/crayon/blood.

There are army lists for several games including pretty much all the GW games plus Flames of War, Confrontation etc etc.

Yes, there are bugs and small errors here and there, but who amongst us has not added up points costs or forgotten to note down an option using the chalk and slate method?

I've heard of a free army builder called "the great unclean one" or something. Is it still around? Has anyone used it? Didn't GW sell a 40K army builder too?

Linda makes a very key point....even though its not a bad program, always have the book to back it up. AB is not a replacement for an army book and the actual rules.
We stand now on the precipice of something monumental and perhaps even capable of boggling the mind in its myriad potentials and possibilities. Try not to drool too much…

Seems pretty cool. Might give me a bit of a head start is the sense of army creation. Seems worth it.
Those that know how to win are much more numerous than those who know how to make proper use of their victories.

Having seen the previous posts i think i will invest in it. I have lizzies and also do a bit of 40k and WAB as well. Think i might run my opponents list through it to keep an eye on them ha ha

@ Rising Son Well this Ludite has Taken to typing in and creatinging simple formats for each unit type... then copy and pasting them into a new document to make a battle specific list such as 2500 pts to face HE... and next week 1250 to face VC... All I do is click and drag then delete whatever was cut form the unit liek if I am not fielding the standard bearer just delete him and correct my points value.

If you were a wiz with excell you can even add int he Mathematics program part to this... But I use the wordpad that came with my PC... simple well typed and quick to build once oyu type in each of your units maximum strength.

Sorry I spend too much money on Models and Paint as it is... cant afford to pay anual fees for something that my Brain can do on its own.

Excell did cross my mind but im useless with it. I can appreciate why someone wouldn't pay for something they could do themselves but i might allow myself one little luxury during this depressing time of the year.

Lol Nothing depressing this time of year man... Its just cold thats all.

If I had $50 right now and was goign to allow myself a luxury it would be a nice computer chair... or a new modelling lamp. Ooo Or better yet and roll with me on this....

2 Blisters of Witch Elves and 3 blisters of Shades.

Or mabey a second Chariot and a second RBT.

OOO OOO I Know That Beast master on Manticore that I never thought practical enough to spent $45 on it.

oooooo I got it Buy the new plastic giant and some bits and make a Druchii slave giant conversion.

Plenty fo stuff to do man :)

sounds good, could do with another couple of chariots for smashing DE...getting carried away now and bit off topic. Don't worry, if i opt for army builder it will be in addition to any new buys.

@Scareypete: If you are using excel then that would pretty much rule you out of the Luddite category mate :D

Don't get me wrong, Excel is definately an option, provided you have access to Office, which a lot of people do. And as Scareypete, the non-Luddite, pointed out if you can fiddle round with the formulas or wehatever they are called you could make your own version for your Druchii.

What I like about AB is that it has all the other armies and supports several other games systems too. Also as a bonus, I often (unfortunately) find myself runnig my opponents army list through just to see that they haven't fudged their figures/bent any rules etc :(
