Bene gesserit among us?
Right now I am fascinated by sisterhood Bene gesserit from Dune. Do you think that SOMETHING like this sisterhood could exist among us? They remind me a lot Convents of sorceresses.
I myself am a huge Dune fan. I think it should be required reading like the Lord of the Rings. But the Bene Gesserit in reality? Sadly no. There are certainly groups that behave that way, high level coporate guys, politicians and rich people, pulling strings behind the scenes. But a group os super women trying to evolove humanity? Nah.
I wish it were true though. Its gotta be better then BS that goes on today.
Nice point about the Sorceres' though, it does kinda fit to an extent.

You, sir, have seen the light.
As for the Bene Gesserit, maybe they do exist. If we could prove anything, it would mean they screwed up.

I've seen the films, but have no intent to ever read the LotR books.
And as for the Dune series...hmmm. After a while it begins to lose the plot.

I call for either an immediate deletion of Vallorns post OR a ban... which ever is easier!
LotR books are great. Dune is great. Now the Dune Prequels The Butlerian Jihad, The Machine Crusade and The Battle of Corrin are just fabulous...

Good point- Bene gesserit and Lahmia
Well if there was not LOTR than we would not be chatting here, because people would under term ELF imagine PIXIE and Dan Abnett would create a story about cruel selfish PIXIE with dark vile BUTTERFLY wings so before you anti-pop idealists start to spit on Tolkien, you should think about fact, that there would NO FANTASY at all ( if you do not count FAITYTALES like Narnia !!! )

On Topic:
I don't really see the sorceresses as being like Bene Gesserit. I see them as being individual, and not really having a lot of organisation, hidden or explicit. Plus the bene gesserit had almost a religious advisor role, whereas religion for the druchii is handled by the Witch Elves.
(Somewhat) Off Topic:
I agree with Dune (the book) being great and going downhill in the subsequent books of the original series. I also second the prequels being awesome if you've read dune.
As for the LotR bashing/defending, it's one of a handful of books I've read more than once, which I think says a lot. As others have pointed out it basically defines the fantasy genre as it is today, as well as still being one of the best in it. I will say that I thought the pace was a bit slow the first time I read it, but it will reward your patience and perseverance. I thought the pace was about right the second time through, considering the enormity of the quest and it being an EPIC.

LOTR books are good writing, bad plot
All the issue with the ring could be solved in a few points:
1. Gandalf discovers location of the ring
2. Gandalf has a chat with Gwaihir deciding Gwaihir and his buddies will drop the ring to the mount doom, but Gwaihir is afraid of getting corrupted. dumdumdummm
3. Gandalf comes to Shire with Gwaihir, find old Bilbo with the ring, tie Bilbo up and secure the ring on the hobbit
4. Gwaihir takes off and dives into mount doom, dropping the ring (and the hobbit) into the volcano.
done.
lower losses in manpower
political situation retains status quo (no upstart Aragorns usurping thrones of Gondor and the like)
everyone lives happily ever after and Merry nicks another carrot from farmer Maggot.

This neglects the teeny little fact that Tolkien lifted his concept of "elf" straight from Celtic mythology. Now re-interpret the story in light of the Tuatha De Dannan and see where that leaves LotR.Sezax wrote:Well if there was not LOTR than we would not be chatting here, because people would under term ELF imagine PIXIE and Dan Abnett would create a story about cruel selfish PIXIE with dark vile BUTTERFLY wings so before you anti-pop idealists start to spit on Tolkien, you should think about fact, that there would NO FANTASY at all ( if you do not count FAITYTALES like Narnia :x :x :x !!! )

I dont think anyone was actually offended (or at least I wasn't). My comment was more registering surprise that someone would use such a corny line. It sounded like something out of Reno 911. Which is not to say I don't appreciate the incredible speed provided by your boots of escaping. They're nice boots.
