Advice for a new starter please.

Post by Pureblood »

Hey folks , longtime lurker first time poster here. I was hoping to get some advice from some more experienced Dark Elves players. I had tried me local GW but i find the manager there insufferable and i come out questioning whether i want to stick with the hobby if i am forced to deal with people like that . Obviously you meet people you clash with in life but id like to minimise that in my hobbys! So enough blabbering from me here are some questions i would love some help with! Thanks in advance.

I would really like to start collecting/playing with around 500pts but i cant find an abundance of 500pt lists to compare to.

What would give me the best base so that i can expand as i learn the rules?

I was thinking a unit of Witch Elves , a Sorceress and a unit of Warlocks , then something else for around 150pts would this work? I want to play really aggressively high risk high reward seems fun to me.

Would the sorceress go in with the Witch Elves or is that a nono?

Thanks guys can't wait for your responses!

Hello! Welcome to the hobby and to the true masters of this world

Your starting idea is great! Witches and Warlocks are undoubtedly our bread and butter choices and excel in their roles. Definitely do not put the sorceress in the crazy ladies, because even D6 S3 hits might punk her after one round. You could fill out the rest of your points with a unit of Darkshards to keep her safe, and at 500pts they will tear up the field with their volume of shots.

When you start to expand, Dark Riders are invaluable as are our Peg Masters (many, many threads on these fellas).

I wouldn't use GW staff as a barometer of the hobby. Many of us steer well clear of the shops themselves :)

A lot of towns and cities have independent games clubs where you may find more like minded types.

And as Curse Bearer says, your initial setup sounds good 8)

Hi and welcome to the forum.

Finding a good place to play is hard. I very rarely go to my local GW shop as I don't like the staff particularly.

Feel free to post your list in the Army list sub forum and we will take a look and hopefully be able to give you some good advice.

Thanks , will do!

As i mentioned before i plan on running a unit of Witch Elves as my main core , how many should i be aiming for in 500pts? I've seen posts on using Witch Elves but not at this points level.

Well you need a minimum of 3 units, so I would suggest 20 is the absolute most you should try and fit in, 12 - 15 is more realistic however.

Welcome. :)

Great advice from everyone above. The only advice I would offer is that a Hydra can be devastating around this point level and upto 1000-1500 too. I would consider one. If you can proxy, all the better. That way, you can see what works for you and what doesn't.

With 15 Witch Elves + full command
5 warlocks
1 sorceress

I end up with about 100pts left , not quite enough for a unit of darkshards , but enough for a Repeater Bolt Thrower. This will leave my sorceress out in the open though will that be a problem?
Any other suggestions? I really appreciate the warm welcome from this forum its been great so far!

So, to make your list legal, you need at least one more unit.

Not really sure you need a level 1unwarded sorceress and Warlocks at 500 pts.

Warlocks by themselves is probably a better choice. Then get yourself a master instead. If you are determined to have both, then get the Sorceress mounted and in with the Warlocks and add a RBT.

I might go something like this;

Master. Full mundane equipment. Pegasus. Charmed shield-143
Warlocks (5) -125
Witches (12) +FC - 162
RBT- 70

Thank you very much for all your help , especially you Amboadine. I have a clear idea of what i'd like in my initial 500pt army now and it really fits with the high risk high reward style i want to play a frenzied sort of aggression. I'l grab the units i need after xmas and venture to the local games shop rather than my local GW , maybe i'l play there one day.

At low point levels, I find Corsairs to be good. The combination of two attacks and good armor save make them excellent all-rounders for those games where you can't have the specialist units.

Hi and welcome to the hobby. Finding a good environment is hard. The GW stores can be tedious with all the selling you have to endure. It is their job. But, atleast in my experience, it is not a bad place to learn the ropes in a forgiving environment. There may also be gaming clubs in your area and the people at the GW stores, or independent stores, may point you in the right direction. In my experience, the environment is a little more sophisticated with players of all types. Try to find someone who is also newish so that you won't be intimidated by all the rules and advanced techniques. Don't let the snobs get you down either, they can be insufferable to be sure.

Tonnes of ace advice on the list above, so I won't try to repeat that! As well as choosing effective units, I'd also suggest thinking about who your characters are, what is their story? No worries if that doesn't do it for you, but having that thread can be great fun in itself, and can help choosing between units if you know what your backstory is!

Re:GW stores, I'd definitely try a few if geography allows. There are some good ones out there too; people who have kept the store open for me just browsing paints, or who run tutorials... Some really nice people at GW, as well as the idiots you sadly bump into now and again!

In any case - welcome on board!
