Dark or Death?! First time vs undead legion

Hi everybody!

So i'm playing against UL for the first time ever this Friday. I've only ever played against VC back from before the end times and therefore i'm kind of confused on what to do and not to do.

My first problem is that i don't know if i should pick death or dark for my lvl 4 Supreme? Since the undead don't fall to pieces when their general die then i don't know if death is as good against them as it was. I mainly see death as a sniping lore (correct me if i'm wrong). I've never really tried Dark but i read a lot of good stuff about it on this wonderful site. ;)

So community. What do you think?

Also if there is anything that I should know about the UL that can be game changers then it would be greatly appreciated with some enlightenment. :D

I don't play Undead much but...

-> Death is a good lore vs them because they have high-value, high-effectiveness, Ld-boost giving characters.
-> Shoot (RBT) or charge the Terrorgheists before they scream your characters/expensive units to death.
-> Witches are good to chew through numbers with multi-attacks and threaten beasties with poison.
-> Elite cavalry/Air cavalry characters are a good option to deliver hurt where it is needed.
-> Remember to include a few Magic Weapons to deal with Ethereals, such as on unit champions (i.e. Knights).

Thank you for the quick response T.D! Much appreciated! So death it is ;) Regarding the possibility of ethereals, would you say that doombolt from warlocks would be sufficient?

Just another quistion if you don't mind! I'm planning on running 30 spears for ranks and holding them up in CC. And then flanking with chariot, knights or witch elves.
The quistion is would you rather bring 15 SoS or 15 WE?

I kinda like that SoS are more contrallable since he normally raises dead in front of my WEs to make them charge out of position. But they're kind of expensive. You have a bunch of experience. What would you say?

Thx.

Re: Ethereals. Magic is variable whilst a magic sword is guaranteed. A cheap as chips magic weapon on a champion is worth squeezing in.

Re: Witches vs SoS. I don't have much experience vs Vamps, so I'll let someone else field that one :)

1 Played 1000pts against UL just last night and it was a draw. It should have been a win but I made some silly mistakes.

I took:

Gen: L1 sorc with opal amulet and dispel scroll, took Light magic signature for extra D6 hits.

Master BSB with OTS, Shrieking blade (to make a unit immune to fear) and charmed shield.

25 Dreadspears
14 Black Guard
1 CoC
5 Warlocks

Things I done learned:

- Never forget that Ethereals cant be harmed by mundane weapons!
- While planning your movement never forget their troops don't run!
- Always think "what if he raises a unit where I want to go" and have a plan B.
- Skellybobs and Zombies are nothing to worry about, even though I had half my black guard killed at the advance they managed to chew through 2 x 30 units of skeletons in three turns not taking one casualty. They had a hand from the warlocks but they were winning combat by so much the units were melting. I could have thrown them into another fight were it not for it getting late! My spear elves acquitted themselves too, chariot and wight lord to the front and 20 ghouls in the flank and they still did lots of damage and held on for two rounds. I was fortunate that my opponent didn't bring any heavy armour though.
- They can only march within 12" of their general, crucial.

Since no one seems to be answering;

- Witch Elves are better vs Undead because of their cheapness, attacks and poison combination

- Sisters of Slaughter are better vs Vampire characters, but their combination of expense to vulnerability is not ideal. SoS do however negate ranks which makes breaking uber-hordes of Undead much easier.

=> a large unit of Witches supported by a small block of SoS would be ideal.

Never really fought undead legions, but my thinking is: witches are core, aband you have to fill core, also witches are imune to fear because of frenzy and have poisen. I would go for witches, mainly because there core

Kill that freaking terrogheist before he wreaks you. Death is good against spirit hosts as the ld is poor. If outside the generals bubble, then suck their life.

Watch out for hexwraith. They are ethereal fast cav. In my opinion the best fast cav in the game. They can march up to your unit, go over it and come back in the rear and do their special damage to you. You can't stop them with chaff. Doombolts if you can.

Uncomped Death is insane. I have played with a mounted death lvl4 with ETC-comp lately and she wrecks face. The ability to get into position with the 18" fast cav move and then throw Purple Sun is really great. If you have some Warlocks as well, you can have a double casting of Doombolt already, which is very useful and IMO one of the main reasons why you would want Dark Magic anyway. It is also worth noting that a misfire on Purple Sun hurts you a lot less than a misfire on Black Horror.

Against Undead? Surely you want to be using Light. Extra damage against Undead units.

I'm primarily a VC player myself, have dabbled with Legion, but the summoning game is not a strong one. TG screams are not too much of an issue since DE have decent leadership.

Don't underestimate Undead speed, Vanhels can jump them forward 8inches, and they can summon zombies anywhere (the actual Lore of Undeath only has a 12inch summoning range for most summoners, although Mannfred and Nagash have longer ranges).

get round the flanks and rear of his skeleton and zombie units with tooled-up dark riders! they'll give a whole load of extra combat res!

The thing about the Lore of Death is Undead in general suck without characters to lead them. Skeletons and Zombies just aren't winning combats. So for every spell you get off, you have a chance to A] reduce your opponent's magic phase, B] reduce your opponent's close combat phase, C] get victory points from a unit, & D] get magic dice back. Lore of Death is scary for the Undead. Plus you can always Purple Sun them to oblivion (and refill your power pool while you're at it!). Enjoy the lore while you can - if rumors are true, we'll all be buying new magic cards in a month!

Bring SoS !

Undead monsters lack armour and come with Regen, if you give those 15 SoS a Flaming Banner it is likely going to be the most victory points harvesting unit you will bring as deleting his big things (terrorgheists, varghulfs, horrors, vargheists etc.) makes the rest of the army powerless. Your witches will be combat ineffective after one of the matchups because of incoming damage, while sisters are able to kill all 4 and still see the end of the battle.

For core bring spears and some dark riders.
