This is an honest question - please do not flame!

Post by Phierlihy »

On Saturday night, Warhammer fantasy dies. With the end of Warhammer and the concept of "druchii" no longer existing, is this board going to be shut down? Or just re-named? Or are you planning on just going forward business-as-usual? I presume all the Warhammer race-specific boards are going to make this decision now that they are about to lose relevance and I'm wondering what the board mods are thinking. I'm sure we all are!

In the short term, absolutely no change, Druchii.net will exist as is. We have already opened a new AoS forum for discussion on the new game.

I am assuming none of the Moderators would mind me sharing the following.

We are already discussing the future and have been for a while, since ET:Khaine, both internally and more recently with the other Elf forums on what the future looks like for Elven factions. No decision will be made until we understand what the future looks like in terms of fluff and the game as a whole. We could potentially have one combined forum, three separate forums as is currently the case, or any number of alternative solutions. At this stage every alternative is valid and has different pros and cons.

We are really in a holding pattern until Saturday when we see the new scrolls and background. Any changes will be structured and not a sudden case of the forum disappearing. We have a great community here and what ever the future brings, this is the most important thing we need to maintain.

I am sure others will also comment.

Hi Phierlihy, the mods are all concerned just as much as you are! We have been discussing at length for the past few weeks just exactly the same question you have posted here.

We are also talking with the mods from the other elven forums (history making stuff)

I cant speak for the other mods as currently no decisions have yet been made, I think we are all just waiting to see what happens in the next few weeks before any decisions are made. We don't want to rush into a bad decision - there is much at stake.

Personally I don't want to see the death of this site - it is my daily warhammer/dark elf fix and over the years of visiting this forum a great part of my hobby.

I'm sure I feel like many of you out there at the moment / quite cheated by GW - in one foul swoop they have devalued my investment that I have amassed over many years of collecting.

Perhaps this is an opportunity for the community to continue on with WHF / The Druchii and make it our own.

Time will tell.

Amboadine & Cultofkhaine, for your information, we're discussing at the moment for how long you will be banned. Some want it to last Eternity. Some say it is not enough.
Well, maybe just until the End Times?

OK, seriously, I'm glad Phierlihy asked that question and it was answered, we have been a little bit light on informing D.netters about that issue.

For a moment there Calisson I thought Amboadine and I might have to go and set up our own D.Net.2 site :D

If it's anything like AoS it will probably be short lived - You can't beat the original!

Actually you can, others have done it. As to AoS well WFB was terrible game with not very good minis , but corporate marketing made it the most successful fantasy game in the world, AoS will take the same route, with the exception that the way it is constructed makes buying more models a verry viable option as you can use anything you buy, and the more you field the better.

If WFB was a terrible game, then why did you play it?

I don't understand the mentality of people who put down something they spend a lot of time and effort on. Life is temporary, and it doesn't make sense to waste it on activities that aren't constructive or enjoyable.

Opinions are subjective of course; I consider FB a good game.

It's never been 100% satisfying to me, but it has been getting better over the editions. Blood Bowl is a better game, and Necromunda an even better game: both were stand alone, and so much easier to balance (Indeed, necromunda even ran on the Warhammer engine). For games that have to be continually altered to sell models and keep the company operational, I think GW have done quite well with FB and 40k.

A great game in my opinion, would be represented by the first few games in the Total War series. Coming from FB they were a revelation; medieval warfare with a consistent internal logic, with rewarding and deep and consistent tactics and strategy! But a computerised engine, and a stand alone game, is always going to provide a better simulation experience than rolling a lot of dice.

What is interesting, is that the basic engine of Shogun: Total War (revealed in the manual to the special edition of the original game) is quite similar to Warhammer's, although working on a decimal, rather than D6 math. Which in my mind shows how good the basic engine of Warhammer is; it has a beautiful and simple series of relations with the game board size, model size, simulated historical combat, and the humble six sided dice.

I can't say where WFB is compared to its competitors, because I haven't played them all. But so far none have grabbed me.

WFB may not be a great game, but in my opinion is a good game (definitely not a bad game) ...and the reason I play it: a great experience; socialising, fluff immersion, reading, story telling, role playing, army building, painting, modelling, the online community ...everything that comes with it :)

I second that.
If it was such a bad game, why play? Why even join a forum dedicated to one of the races in said game?

+2. But, that said, grumbling against a common foe or shared complaint often brings people together, so having a good biatch about a gaming system may not mean that person truly hates it, more that good comrades enjoy a pint of beer while having a good grumble with some friends :)

To me, Age of Sigmar looks like a fun beer and pretzels skirmish game. But it lacks the EPIC feeling of warhammer fantasy, which was always the thing I got out of it, as opposed to say warmachine, Malifaux, or infinity, all of which were very much skirmish games (even 40k is skirmish, I would argue, and lacks that epic feeling). Did the gaming community need another skirmish game? Not really, no. Warhammer Fantasy filled a role for me as an epic strategy game, I don't think AoS will.

Back on topic, it would be great to see the forum survive, regardless of whether a new one appears, because at least some of us will continue to play 8th edition as a legacy game and it would be awesome to be able to still receive and give C&C on Druchii tactics, army lists, and so on. But, it may be that interest and activity is too low for that to happen.
