Greetings Tyrants,

The "old" fantasy game is still getting a lot of support and love, which is great! It has been the main focus of this community for such a long time. :)
I'd like to discuss how the ending of Warhammer as we know it has affected your goals and dreams with the fantasy battle game. Are you planning to continue 8th edition? Will it be your main game or will you branch out to other interests as well?
What would you like to do in 8th edition before you finally put that old rulebook to rest?

And.. while we're on the subject.. What are you hoping to find here, at Druchii.net, with respect to the 8th edition? An old hang-out? Support for new scenarios, and story-based campaigning?
More painting and modelling?

Let us know!

Perhaps I'll kick off the discussion with my own ideas. I'd like to continue WFB, or at least some form of ranked battle game (set in the old world) because I have grown too fond of the hobby to give up. I never managed to fully get into tournaments in Belgium and I doubt I will succeed now. Accepting that, I see myself focus solely on fluff and style battles, perhaps friendly campaigns.

I might try alternative rulesets, but it largelly depends on my gaming group. A buddy of mine will be trying to get a BRB for cheap, now that the game is officially over, so we can continue the mayhem. So in a weird way this passing of 8th is offering some opportunities as well.

In terms of armies, I have the boxes ready to expand my Dark Elves considerably and will be working on that. I've a load of unfinished models stuffed in a closet which I've lovingly named my "hall of shame". And I want to get rid of that closet.

I might try a small Chaos and Beastmen army, for small campaigns/events (nothing too serious), but there's not much incentive to invest time in a new army right now. With Dark Elves and some Goretide I have my work cut out for me.
Our main Dwarf player is happily building more Dwarfs, and our High Elf player just posted pictures of newly painted Spearmen. So the hobby is very much alive and kicking. So why stop? :P

We're looking into terrain... Which is something we rarely made time for. Perhaps we can make that time now.

I expect to play some casual games of 8th ed. with my old friends, exactly as I used to do before the End times.
I’m too fond of WFB background, to even think to abandon that setting.
We had (and will have) 3 – 4 games every year.
So the end of WHFB support from GW is nearly meaningless to me.
I enjoyed painting miniatures, and modeling terrain pieces all over the year.
I own many armies I collected in decades: .dark elves, high elves, wood elves, Empire, Brettonnians, Chaos Warriors.
GW could expect me to buy €. 500,00 of its products every year.
Now I’ll buy no more GW products.
I had always preferred to have Armies made of 100% Citadel minis.
I felt it was some sort of loyalty owed to the creators of my hobby.
Then GW grew lazy, and started to milk his players’ base without any decency.
So I participated in RH Kickstarter with lieutenant bid, and from now on. I’ll consider all the valid competitors.
My goal with WHFB is to have fun with my friends with a wonderful background, perfect for epic and funny stories, with rules that allow actual strategy and balance.
I’m very selective about rules and background.
If I’m satisfied with them, I’ll stick to the game. No matter if it’s no more supported by its producers.
Actually I play discontinued games only:
BloodBowl
V-TES the eternal Struggle CCG
WHFB 8TH ED.

I really hope that this wonderful site will keep producing smart ideas and tactics for my beloved game.
And I really hope that the community will come up with a 9th ed totally unofficial, in order to be tested by the players.

Wow Ming, we could be long - lost cousins or something. I too play those same games, Blood Bowl, V:TES, 8th Ed WHF. You should look into Dechipher's Lord of the Rings CCG. :)

Well, it won't change much for my group. I've got some buddies about an hour away that play every other week. My schedule only allows for about once a month. We'll continue with 8th and might occasionally try AoS sometime. Likely though, we will take 8th and try and improve upon it with house rules. The guys have been wanting to do that since it came out.

Right before all this shiz went down I was able to get my brother hooked on the game. Hes finishing up college, so I took the liberty of amassing a pretty good HE force for him. Plus I've got two very large WE and DE armies. So if it comes down to it, we could just have the occasional family game amongst the snobbish elves.

I've been so busy collecting and with life that I've only painted 1/4 of my models so that will be the new phase for me. I might pick up the occasional new model for the elves, but only if it's an amazing model. Like, HE dragon, WE wildwood rangers or sisters of thorn or DE cauldron of blood. They keep cranking those out and I'll buy a new one on eBay if/when I can find one cheap. I'll never buy from a GW store again. Not because I hate GW or anything, but their prices are absurd.

Same here, GW support is meaningless to me and my mates.
We looked at it, discussed it, one of us tried a few games. Not me though, i'm normally not much of a nay sayer, but ...nay.
I was tempted to buy the starters kit, I really was.But after reading the rules and the scrolls again. I dont see it happening.

We will continue to play 8th edition. Some minor houserules probably. (disruption and some cavalry boosts etc...)
I got al the end time books, SoM, Blood in the badlands etc. So there are plenty of variation posibilities. Still want triumph and treachery one day

I got quite the hall of shame my self, there is so much to Druchii, empire, skaven and scenery to finnish, paint etc
i could do with some wood elfs and their army book for my endtime army, but thats ebay-only. I'm still quite sad that they didnt bring out an 8th ed. book for brets, skaven , we would have had 10 large 8 ed. armies between the 3 of us. oh well .

Besides that, we are picking up mordheim (pre- building some warbands to get some other, non wargaming friends into the game) I meant to give the Avatar of war arena game a go for some time now.

We got a pretty decent gaming club in the area, they are sticking with 8th and mordheim as well...As far as im concerned GW can do what ever they want. I'm not bothered.

Im curious about what RH is cooking up though...

This year, my plan was to finally get around to painting my Dark Elves. However, that was put on hold following The End Times and subsequent destruction of the Warhammer world as we knew it. It had left me with a serious case of "What's the point?"

Chatting to my group, they seem to want to continue with the 8th edition for at least the time being, so my goals remain the same - the eventually paint my army and play with them. The trouble is, I'm going to really struggle to add to them now :/

I highly doubt that - eBay will have tons of warhammer models for the foreseeable future.

I will probably try AoS sometime, but it definitely will not replace the "real" Warhammer.
All my friends will continue to play 8th ediition, the only really downside is, that the GW Shop only allows AoS games, so my attendance (and amount of money spent there) will rapidly decline.
I plan on grabbing the 8th army books on eBay as soon as the prices drop and will most certainly try to grab a complete 2nd army if the occassion arises.

Is that confirmed? Last I heard you could still play Warhammer Quest/Necromunda/etc at a GW store provided it was booked in advance...

Yeah, you can get some great deals if you have time and patience. I just picked up a unopened skycutter for $40, including shipping. Earlier this year I picked up an unopened COB for $60, including shipping.

I can only say what the employees of my particular store told me. Their statement was clear: Only Age of Sigmar (except for special events)

Rules: I was no longer playing, due to sons having grown up (their fault, I did not grow up myself! :D ).
AoS rules are better adapted to casual games such as what I will play in the foreseeable future.

Fluff: I loved WH low fantasy setting, as heavily inspired from RL middle ages. I liked it better than D&D where I come from.
The new, high fantasy fluff looks more to have been created with video gamers in mind.
No big deal, I still own lots of WH editions and AB.

Models: Many mini to finish, at the moment most of them are of raw table top quality, not display quality.
My understanding of AoS is that DE will be supported as Exile Aelves. On drawings, you see now and then what is obviously WE - whatever the name they will get ultimately. Fluff mentions Malekith as Malarion (TM), and even Morathi!
Here, I expect continuity from GW, with all present models being sold until they last, to be replaced by new models for different units of stunning quality. I was amazed by the quality of the scourgerunner or the K-beast. Testinomies about new models indicate that GW aims at highest quality.

-=-=-

D.net support?

Gaming in WH pre-ET:
I hope that hard die WH8th afficionados from all races will converge into a worldwide agreeable set of rules, with downloadable rules inspired from WH8th integrating FAQs and some comp. At the moment, it is unclear to see which erratum and "improvements" will emerge as the new norm. I expect ETC to have a great influence there.

I expect D.net to keep a large part of its forums dedicated to WH8 games, army lists building, rules interpretation, tactics... In particular, D.net should have a say in errata regarding DE. I probably will no longer remain a rule specialist as I have been, due to amendments and having little perspective to play such games. D.net needs a couple of specialists for these games to mod and animate this part.

Gaming in AoS:
This is where my future belongs. Rule interpretation is much easier, most debates are solved by acceptance that this is a new game, so forget your old habits; and that this is a beer & bretzel game.
We progressively discover the tactical finesses of the game. Love that! More of such discussions will be needed with the future relesae of tourney rules.
I hope batreps to be epic, more than tactic, which suits my roleplaying backgound.

Gaming in other games:
Don't know yet which game will emerge.
I expect D.net to support no more than one of these games specifically, with one dedicated forum and mod.
I might grow an interest if whichever local community I come to discover turns to that game massively.

Fluff:
I wish to see a continuing support from D.net to Roleplaying games (near zero at the moment) and to short writing competitions (outstanding in the last 2 years).
I wish to be able to discuss about DE fluff. I will try to keep updated about Exile's fluff, when their own book will be released.

Modeling:
The future is bright, with stunning models to be proposed by GW and competitors.
I expect to keep seeing D.net blessed with incredible painters.

Rules: Find occasional games of 8th edition to play. I moved countries a couple of years ago and in the US they mostly play 40k, with the occasional fantasy thrown in. I play a game now and then, and I hope to continue doing this with 8th edition. I had hoped, maybe, to do an 8th ed fantasy tournament or two, but that is probably less likely now due to AoS. I have no real interest in AoS, not because the rules are necessarily bad (they probably are, but that's another thread for another day), but because I loved fantasy for its "epic" feeling, and I aren't going to get that from a skirmish game. Besides, if I'm going to play a skirmish game, it'll be Warmachine, Malifaux, or Infinity (all of which I have, and all of which are a lot of fun).

Fluff: I loved the core story of warhammer fantasy, but was not as hung up on the subsequent development of it as others. I remember being about 10 and getting a copy of the warhammer high elves 4th edition army book, which had the first (IIRC) full delivery of the basic core of the story that came to underpin warhammer: the incursions of chaos, Aenarion's rise and fall, the sundering of elfdom in twain, the war with the dwarfs, and the rise of other darkness in the old world. I loved all of that, but never got into the subsequent fluff creations (e.g. the novels, the other army book fluff, etc) as much. So, while I think End Times were terrible from a story point of view (it's a major error for authors to destroy/resolve story lines too quickly, as their audience struggles to keep up cognitively and an emphasis on overwhelming ends up underwhelming because it all seems too casual and the implications of major events as they happen too under-fleshed out), I'm not as plussed about them as some others. I intend to continue enjoying fantasy fluff generally, across all of the fantasy in those books, games, and even television and movies that have it.

Models: My first priority at the moment is painting my 40k imperial guard army. After that, it would probably be my Warmachine Rhulic forces, then either my Warmachine Cygnar, Infinity, or Malifaux models. I finished my dark elfs for the most part (and pretty poorly too) some years ago and while there are a few models that could use painting, it's not a priority.

I think that I am such an intermittent player that my goals haven't changed too much. I don't have a lot of time for gaming so I can just work on creating an awesome looking army and be happy with it. I plan on still seeking out games of 8th ed games/regiment of renown where I can. Maybe once AoS gets cleaned up a little I'll look into it. Ultimately I would love to have a full, themed 2000-2400pts painted on the shelf. No need to build the master net list, just have a stunning army. It not like there are too many more tournament opportunities I would image..

As far as for the website, all of your ideas sound great. Even if the game has changed painting and modelling will always be en vogue. Most of the time I just sit here and read posts just to keep my finger on the pulse of the hobby. Maybe once AoS catches on I'll catch the bug based on some veteran's appeal or logic. Story based campaigns, or anything for that matter, would be great.

Not really. The COB is $75. You can find it at a lot of places for 20% off that which gets you to $60 but then you have to pay $10 in shipping. The Skycutter is $60 which at 20% off brings it to $48 plus shipping. So I probably saved at least $20 between the two from the 20% off price. If you were talking retail, I saved $35.

You can find better deals than that too, especially if you're willing to buy stuff from older editions. I like to buy minis that have been badly painted because it drives down the cost, then strip the paint and do it yourself.

But no way am I giving you ALL my bidding secrets. I don't want all you monkeys driving up my prices! :)

Well... My "spending" problem that gave me my "hall of shame" of unfinished models was partially funded by the unfortune of a few stores. In a short period two nearby stores sold out their stock at 50% discount. I had some money put aside for Warhammer, which I wasn't planning on spending all at once, but... well I had to use the moment. They were clear of their Dark Elf stock in no time. And then some Chaos. And some Beastmen..
*sigh*

But hey! That means I have to spend less now and have more work to do! And I do hope to finish my DE army. I'm undecided yet on which army I'll pursue next, Chaos or Beastmen. My thirst for Chaos is a bit sated with the AoS Goretide set, but then again it might be a nice addition to that army as well (on square bases though!)

Most definitely. I have an older cauldron of blood I got for $20 which included the witch elves and hag. My two hydras are older as well and were around $25-30 each.

Soak them in simple green and they're good as new. :D

I think I'm going to add that I plan on reading more WFB novels. I still like the old setting, and still have half a dozen books in it that are collecting dust on my bookshelf. I plan to read them all, in due time! I'm painting mostly now, until I crawl in bed. Soon, soon! Soon it's back to the books.
My last book was Deathblade, and I loved it. Malus was such a fun character. And with the whole book series on him... it was great to see the whole story.

My mission is to finish a god 3000pt army a year. Working on my corsairs this year, it has gone in spurts and then I get distracted, procrastinate a bit, another month goes by and now I'm back to painting again. Thanks Daeron, you have given me some motivation of the past month.

I find that I am running out of time this year - Armies on Parade normally gives me a good incentive, but I don't think I will have the time to achieve what I would like this year - still will give it a shot.

After looking into the DE heraldry a bit further I am very keen to work on my Ghrond army next with a Slaanesh twist.

This thread is a little older now but I still feel like leaving my thoughts here.
I'm continuing 8th edition and so does my gaming group. AoS never convinced us and it seems to be getting only worse. The biggest problem to me is, that this soul and heartless game got to replace whfb. If it would have been established parallel to the other games, whfb could be fading out and people can get used to the new stuff. Now i feel like it's somehow forced uppon me and it just isn't good enough yet.
Even if one would like the models and the rules, the whole artwork, design and fluff just says: we don't give a damn about it. Now buy our overpriced plastic already! And that's what I really don't like.
Don't get me wrong: gw really got me used to spending too much on their plastic, but at least they always gave me a cool background for everything. AoS doesn't do that for me at all.
I will take a look again, when it reaches the 2nd edition and maybe all the connections to the old world have been cut.
9th Age is no real alternative for us because it's pretty much similiar to 8th just without the fun stuff. Of course it's balanced and everything but I don't play tournaments and in our group we agree on the level of hardcore we wanna play. So there is no need for that. And I really love the random stuff in whfb!

Beside 8th I'm entering Infinity at the moment. I need a game with support so i can buy, build and paint stuff. And Infinity is something completely different and very fresh.
