1500 point MSU army-worth a look

Post by The dark prince »

Ok this is the army I threw together in anticipation of our store's tournament.

Heroes:

Noble w/ dark steed, HA, SDC, halberd, SoG

-Goes with the standard-equipped DR to give them some punch. Could get switched to the Executioners.

Scroll Caddy

-Necessary at this points value...

Core:

2*12 Spearelves w/ shields

-Deployed 3*4 I find them to be very effective roadblocks. The shields increase their survivability

5 Dark Riders w/ rxbs, muso

5 Dark Riders w/ muso

5 Dark Riders w/ muso, standard

-These guys are basically for harrassing and disrupting the opponents battle line and for war machine hunting. Indispensible in my opinion...

10 Rxbmen w/ muso

-Just there for some fire support and to assist the RBTs. I don't like giving them shields because I feel those points can be well used elsewhere.

Special:

10 Executioners w/ champ

10 Executioners w/ champ, standard

-These guys are here to give me some armour penetration. The 2nd unit contains 1 of the 2 standards in my army and needs to get into combat.

9 Harpies

-War machine hunters basically...

Rare:

2 RBTs

-Although boring I feel they are mandatory for an MSU army to give it some firepower.

Total Points: 1436

Any suggestions on what to spend the last of the points on? Comments welcome...

Drop one musician from the DRs and get some Shades. You have the potential for deep penetration early in the game then.

I agree, shades would really help this army. Or at least have the potential to do so. Although you could drop a single harpy instead of the musician as that musician is often invaluble with DR.

If you are going Shades you have to free up some SPECIAL SLOTS (2x Executioners + 1x Harpies = 3 slots taken).

I would suggest to not use the Shades, or swap them for Harpies and add WITCH ELVES instead of one unit of Execs (1 is enough I think) - one Hag with manebane can do as much amage and whole exec unit when fighting T4+.

I think I will leave the shades unless I playtest it and find it unbalanced. I really like the two units of Exes. I find harpies to be better at war machine hunting then shades and also a more effective prospect in combat.
