Dark Elves Starting Army

Post by snoers »

I want to start an Dark Elf army to use in 8th Edition and maybe for some AOS.

I want to buy following stuff:

20 Darkshards
20 Black Ark Cosairs
20 Witch Elves
5 Dark Riders

20 Executioners
5 Doomfire Warlocks
1 War Hydra
2 Reaper Bolt Thrower

1 Cauldron of Blood -> Death Hag
1 Supreme Sorceresses on Black Dragon
1 Lokhir Fellheart -> Master

10 Mengil Manhide's Manflayers -> Shades; is it possible to use the Banner and Musican? Can say be Darkshards in AoS?

Will it be a starting army I can use in both systems?

I got this list for 8th Edition

1 Supreme Sorceress 520
1 Death Hag with Cauldron of Blood 275 + Witchbrew 30 than 10 Equipment for Master
1 Master 70+ 40 Equipment

20 Darkshards + Shields 260
20 Black Ark Cosairs 220 +30 for Command
20 Witch Elves 220 + 30 Command
5 Dark Riders 80 + 20 Shield and Repeater Crossbows

10 Shades 160 + 30 Command + 30 LA & GW
10 Har Ganeth Executioners 120 + 30 for Command
2 Repeater Bolt Trowers 140
1 War Hydra + Fire Breath 180

5 Doomfire Warlocks 125 + 10 Command

Total: 2500

Are there to few Har Ganeth Executioners in the battleline? Are the to few models in the battlines in general for 8th Edition?

I can only advise on AoS, since I've never played 8th edition, but the problem I see is that you don't have enough Battleline units for a legal Matched Play AoS game. That's fine if you just want to play Open or Narrative games, of course. But otherwise I would suggest choosing one of the three main DE subfactions (Daughters of Khaine, Darkling Covens or Scourge Privateers) and sticking to their units initially. Start with a 1000 point force with at least 2 Battleline units (DoK = Witch Aelves; DC = Darkshards, Dreadspears and Bleakswords; SP = Corsairs). If you don't want to be restricted to a single subfaction, then you will need at least 2 units of Darkshards, Dreadspears or Bleakswords, because Witches and Corsairs can't be taken as Battleline units in a mixed force.

For 8th edition:

Sorc on dragon is not easy to play with. You'll have a learning curve.
The master serves no purpose. You could have him count as corsair champion.

I would never take the command group in shades. The spare command group points would much better be given to darkshards.
I would take shades as 2 units of 5.

10 Execs are mostly points given to opponent. Either take them 20 (using pts from master) or don't take the command group.

For the dragon, you'd probably be best assembling and painting both riders (i.e. the sorceress and the dreadlord) and making them interchangeable. That way, you can use the sorceress to lead a Darkling Covens force in AoS, but use the dreadlord for 8th edition games.

Hmm, with the way ridden monsters work in 8th I would not take a Dragon Sorceress. The Dragon is designed to eviscerate and burn the shiznit out of anything in its way but Close Combat is the last place you would want to put a Supreme sorceress, shes too fragile. You want her bunkered in a Unit or staying out of enemy charge/shooting arcs on a Dark Steed. If you put her on a dragon but fly her out of the way of trouble all game the dragon has been a waste of points. In a list of this size I'd personally want a tooled up Dreadlord to lead it too so I'd dispense with the dragon and spend the points on a good build for him

My favourite build is:

Sea Dragon Cloak
Heavy Armour
Halberd
Dragon Helm
Black Amulet (Especially against Chaos as they have to challenge)
Other Tricksters Shard or potion of strength

If you only take one master make him the BSB and stick him on a steed or cold one so he can easily get to where he needs to be. Also Id cut 10 of the Dark Shards, dispense with the command for the Shades and warlocks and spend the points on either more Executioners or another Unit of Xbow + Shiled Dark Riders giving both of them musicians.

1 Dreadlord + Halberd + HA + Sea Dragon Cloak 157 Black Amulet 60
1 Supreme Sorceress lvl 4 220
1 Master +25 BSB + Dark Stead 10 + HA 4 + Shield 2 + Halbberd 2
1 Death Hag with Cauldron of Blood 275 + Witchbrew 30

10 Darkshards + Shields 130
20 Witch Elves 220 + 30 Command
5 Dark Riders Xbow + Shield + Musican 110
5 Dark Riders Xbow + Shield + Musican 110

5 Shades 80 + 15 LA & GW
5 Shades 80 + 15 LA & GW
30 Black Guard of Nagaroth 450 + 30 for Command
2 Repeater Bolt Trowers 140
1 War Hydra + Fire Breath 180

5 Doomfire Warlocks 125

2500

Would it be good to put the Sorceres into the Blackguard? And where can I put the Dreadlord?

Put the sorceress with the dark shards, the blackguard would be the worst place to put her! I'd stick the dreadlord with the BGs. Ld 10 stubborn? Yes please. I'd invest in some Executioners too, they really are fantastic at what they do.

Now that the DoK battletome is out, this is no longer accurate. Witch Aelves and Sisters of Slaughter are now battleline units by default, meaning they can fill your compulsory unit choices in mixed DE/Order armies as well as DoK armies.
