- A raven flaps out of the sky and perches on a weapons rack in the Khainite base camp 20 leagues south of Ghrond. A message is tied to its leg. -

Lord General,

I have received the news about my status within the Temple. It is regretable, but somehow not surprising. Heresy is becoming synonymous with disagreement with the "leaders" of Naggaroth. I am known for placing pragmatism above politics, religion or obedience to Hellebron or Morathi. It is refreshing to see that you do as well.

But this is undeniably the result of the meddling of the Sorceress Xaniphera. She publicly slandered me as a supporter of the Cult of Pleasure in the Royal Court. By themselves, my field tests of using bound daemons as front line attrition troops were not enough to truly turn the official attention of the Temple against me. But Xaniphera's lies were enough to tip the balance. I deduce that she is attempting to draw me into the Cult by isolating me from any other allies within Naggaroth.

If you should happen across this insidious little strumpet, it would serve both of us if you were to take her alive. I would appreciate the sport of breaking this undying nuisance. But you would benefit as well. My intelligence leads me to believe that Xaniphera may be useful as leverage against Lord Democles. But I warn you. Bind her hands, gag her and keep her only under the guard of the most hard-hearted of Witch Elves. Her ability to enchant and seduce should not be underestimated.

On the note of Democles, I have had Black Lotus outriders reporting seeing your sister's company advancing southward past the 6th Gate of Arnheim. She seems to be doing rather well for herself. I thought you would like to know, as field communications are unreliable on the Arnheim plains.

As for my agents, please send them on their way. I would rather sacrifice them than implecate you and your House. The worthy shall survive to report back to me.

May your blade stay wet,
General Kala Kodai Velari
Commander, Black Lotus Brigade

119th Day of the Civil War,

Hmmm, interesting. When I left the Ghrond it was calm and the cultists were taking shelter against the storm, now. They are attacking in force, According to Lord Moniath. He Himself Slew a Great daemon of Slannesh, he deserves credit as he has made a remarkable recovery in the last few days. He has also recovered the chariot of his son Dalain. However, this is interesting. It seems that the cultists only seem to want to attack when I am not in the vicinity. They fear me! Ha I laugh at there cowardice.

General Kala has written back to me, it is of surprise to me that she already knew of her status within the temple. However as long as she doesn’t come north she should be safe. However I have a new objective now, The Sorceress Xaniphera, must be captured. Although I shall use the brand of a heretic, to capture her will mean more to me than anything else, she apparently knows a lot about the dealings of the cult and also she means a great deal to a Cult army heading north.

However, now I must return to Ghrond with all haste, before the cults grows overconfident that I have left the city for good.

Khael Vraneth, marching north to Ghrond.

Lord Vraneth,
All is quiet now. It is the silence before the storm. The tensions in Ghrond are hotter than hell. I bid you to make haste towards Ghrond for the battle will commence before dawn. And it will be bigger than anything we have seen yet. I have interrogated several prisoners all saying the names Lonicera and Xaniphera. Two names we know all too well. These are the top of the cult and they are here, ready for their big retribution. Make haste!

122nd Day of the Civil War

Finally I have returned to Ghrond, in time it seems. When I left to deal with the Cultists outside the city four days ago Ghrond was relatively peaceful, with only the odd skirmish. However as soon as I left all hell broke lose and Lord Moniath, Whom I had left in command of Ghrond in my absence was sorely pressed. All over the city the cult surfaced and battled with both the city defence force and the temple. However although we were hard pressed Lord Moniath did well and the cultist barely gained a yard. I have now returned to Ghrond and the cult has fallen back to its strongholds, once again an eerie calm has fallen over Ghrond, with only the odd skirmish disturbing the silence. I believe it is the calm before the storm.

To The North, word has reached me of a renewed attack on the watchtowers by the forces of Slannesh; they are pushing through the gap made by the capture of the Spire of Malice. I have ordered several forces that arrived yester eve from Clar Karond, they shall march on the morrow north, to aid the waning forces of the north. Long have they held the cult’s allies at bay, but know they are failing. Fresh forces should tip the balance back into our favour.

Khalek Has returned to me, long has my standard bearer blockaded the bleak coast but now I have recalled him to my side, fresh forces he has, long tired of the endless blockade of Arnhelm. Now they shall fight for Khaine and his cause. They are ready for battle. Khalek has also brought a rumour with him, according to troops at the 6th gate there is rumour that the cult in the south has been defeated, and that they have been routed by my sister and the lizards. However, this has not been confirmed yet, but if true it shall be a great boost to our moral.

But my mind is troubled, for the first time in my long life I am having trouble sleeping. My dreams are plagued by images of my Troops watching over me with sightless eyes. The fallen of this war, they are. All I hear now in sleep is whisperings of betrayal, traitor, slaughterer and Lord. Horrible they are daemons of my dreams. A great fear I hold of them now, for now Tuerl has made me an elixir which allows me to fall into a dreamless sleep, but I cannot use if forever, what these visions say I know not.

A herald arrives in Ghrond in full dress uniform. He sits upright and proud in the saddle. His standard displays the gleaming device of House Vraneth. It is a beautiful sight amongst the devastation of the ruined city. He openly announces that has a glorious message for the Lord General

My Dear Brother,

I’m writing to tell you that I will be returning to Ghrond soon and I’ll be bringing a little gift for you. Victory! My push to the south has been hard, but I have thoroughly broken the Cultists. Their armies are not exterminated, but are in such a state of disarray that they cannot regroup. I am confident that we have no more threats coming through the southern passes. Praise to Khaine!

My only regret is that I can’t seem to catch Lord Democles. He’s evaded my patrols with a substantial force under his command. He’s not a threat to the true believers, but he still eludes me. My interrogations have revealed that he is more preoccupied with some Sorceress that seems to be his driving obsession. He would let the entire Cult position fall to get to her. He seems to think that Kala has something to do with her. Do you know anything about a Slaaneshi Sorceress named Xaniphera?

But this is a trifle. The Cult has been broken and I will be coming home. We have a substantial number of prisoners and slaves to deal with. I am going to leave the repentant and the broken daemons with General Kala in Arnheim. I’m sure she will find good use for them on the front lines against the Asur. Let her have the survivors for her Black Lotus.

I am also planning to return the Executioner honor guard you sent to her from our own troops. Furthermore, Duke Tularc will be receiving about a quarter of our people at the Wrath Gate, with your permission of course. I’d like to see the Asur brought down as much as he does. We should be able to finish off the Cultists in the north without them.

As for the captured faithless, we will literally have hundreds for the altar. House Vraneth will undeniably win the competition in the Harvest of Souls this year.

I’m looking forward to seeing you again, brother. It has been too long. The next time we speak it will be face to face.

Warmest affections,
Lelith

123rd Day of the Civil War

A Curse I lay upon the Cult, just scant hours after entering the city of Ghrond a large force of daemons attacked the city gates. I was forced to call almost every defender to the gates save for a small defensive force that under the command Dalain Monaith was supposed to prevent the cult within the city rising. Long I held the gate almost alone, until Lord Monaith and his few remaining executioners rushed to my aid. Dozens of daemons and foul humans fell to our combined blades. However the Cultists days were numbered, a few hours later they were scattered upon the field, thy were hit by a two pronged attack by Geleth Sieth’s forces on the left flank, and Paladin Darkshroud’s forces on the right flank. Their numbers swelled by forces from the watchtowers and Naggarond.

But it is the news that was brought to me afterwards that caused me great anguish; Dalain Monaith brought her to me, Tiamehk the lieutenant of Hellebronn was brought before me as I was talking to Lord Monaith. In tears of rage she told me of what had happened at the great temple.

Stunned I was, as I heard what the lieutenant of Morathi had done to the greatest temple of Khaine. A short time later I, Dalain and his Father were standing amidst the wreckage that had once been the greatest temple of Khaine. All around us the citadel burned, a foul reek hung in the air. The tower still stood but damaged and wreathed in smoke. Finally as I walked to where the great statute had once stood I saw a symbol. Slaanesh.

This is a blow that perhaps will never heal, yes the temple can be re-built, but it will take decades, perhaps more. Never had I expected the cult to do anything like this, not like this, Vengeance shall be mine tonight, the cult shall pay dearly for this atrocity.

125th Day of the Civil War

Long have I fought to avenge the desecration of the great temple of Khaine, literally thousands of Cultists died to my Draich. Although I was sorely wounded half a dozen times my rage kept me awake and vengeful. The cultists have now fallen back to several fortifications within the city. However, they are now fewer in number and in strength.

Now I lie in Pain, the Pain of my failure to protect the temple and my pain from my wounds. Tiamehk has told me of what exactly happened at the temple. I was taken scant hours after I left the city and it was burned and sacked 5 days ago now. She had lain hidden in the chamber of Shadowblade hidden deep places of the temple. She had only emerged two days ago after she was stunned by a falling piece of masonry.

At Least Lonicera had some type of honour to send me a letter, Lord Monaith has executed to wretch that brought it. I would have ripped his head off with my bare hands if I could, but I am wounded. The only thing that has caused me to rise from my bed was the news that was brought from the south.

A Herald from my sister has arrived, We Have victory in the south. My sister is now on-route to Ghrond, the forces of slannesh in the south have been routed. Joyous tidings these are in great times of woe. She has left some forces with General Kala in the south, mainly captured cultists but also a large force under Duke Tularc. She will be in Ghrond within the week.

Lord Vraneth,
How are your wounds healing? I am sure my father wishes to visit you. But he has continued your rampage. He singlehandedly massacred one of the fortifications. Only to run of to another prey. The way things are looking now he will soon join you in your chambers for healing. Daleon has not flinched from his side as for yet and he too could use some rest. But I cannot force them too stop. I have been helping the witch elves themselves with retribution. I was allowed to march with Tiamekh herself and have been doing great slaughter in Khaine's name. I am now too wounded to continue and am rested in a location I dare not tell in fear of assassination.
Heal well,
Dalain Moniath

126th Day of the Civil War,

Still I lie wounded in bed, a hate myself for such folly that I did to myself. I should have never allowed my hatred to have clouded my judgement. Dalain Moniath too has been injured, though not to the extent that I have. However, even as I lie here I feel my strength returning. Hopefully I shall be fit enough to fight again before the week is out.

The city still lies within the Fog of War, smoke from the cult burning, the houses of the populace of Ghrond as they seek to do as much damage to the city as they can. They have sunk low now as to only sack the places of our people. The populace is now threatening to rise up against them, whereas for the past months they have lain silent in fear of both sides. The cult knows not what it is getting itself into.

My Dreams are once again haunting me, now they are filled with images of some fell creature, a serpent it seems to be akin with but with arms and a great sword, then shortly after it chases me another figure appears above me with a Lakelui. I wake up as the blade hits me. Whatever these dreams mean I know not. But I shall have to ask my sister about them when she returns before the end of the week.

Lord Vraneth,
I write to you from my sickbed to report you from tidings of the city. My father is still up and running. He took his rest only after he collapsed after two days. He is not seriously injured and continued fighting an hour ago. Daleon isn't flinching from his side for 1 second nor are the 7 remaining Kadath. I will join him after this message is send, for I too am healed to full power. The last outposts of the Cult are being destroyed as we speak. The ones we know of that is. The fact is that there are many more we do not know of. I've send for a contignent of shades from the watchtowers. But they haven't arrived yet. The troops are cleaning every building in the city and sometimes meet resistance. Although the true fighting power of the cult seems broken. I fear they still have outposts in the sewers for many a flank attack has hit us from corners of the city that had been thoroughly cleaned. We have send troops into the sewers but none have returned. Tomorrow when the top of the city is clean we will start cleansing the sewers.

128th Day of the Civil War.

My Wounds are healing but i am still not able to rise from my bed. the cult is slowluy losing the ground that it gained in the last few days. the slums of the city are now on fire once more and part of the southern wall has been breached by the magic of the cultists. However my Brother is holding it and is instructing several sorceresses to rebuild it even as a write.

At Least i still have 4 elves in ghrond that i can still trust. lord Moniath and his sons and my own brother. romour has now spread throughout the city that i have indeed been injured. i fear that the cult may attempt to assassinate me as i lie wounded, in a feverish state.

My dreams are still haunted by that shadow figure who seems to grow larger everyday, perhaps a sign of impending doom or a choice that i must make. of which i cannot say for certain yet but perhaps i shall learn more before sunrise.

129th Day of the Civil War

Still no news from the south, all that we have is rumour of Arnhelm itself being under attack, great news this is for the druchii in the other cities but not in Ghrond. i do not believe it anyway. The last time i heard from Kala the Asur were still fighting a desperate rear guard action against her forces. they seem pretty mad though, something about one of their princes converting. i must thank kala if i ever meet her face to face.

Here in Ghrond lord Moniath and his sons have gone underground into the sewers to attempt to wipe out the large number of cultists that a seeking refuge there. perhaps one of there last strongholds. however the cult still controls the areas around the slums perhaps the larges area in the city. I myself shall lead our forces there within the week.

My Brother has now sealed the breach in the wall desperatly holding of counter attacks from the forces of the cult outside the city. he was assisted finally when Galeth Sieth's forces attacked the enemy from the rear. My Brother now has a great respect for this young general and i suspect he will take him under his wing in his next expedition to the old world.

My Dreams are still haunted the figure now rises above me with his lakelui about to strike. However, now i see his face although shrouded in shadow, i think that it is Veloran Erathai that accursed anointed that has escaped my driach some two times now.

Dispatch to Lord Vraneth, high leader of the holy Armies

I have just awokened after an attack that went horribly wrong several days ago and i am still wounded, my entire coven has been slaugtered. It was terible, we were prparing to attack an cultist outpost whne we were ambushed by a keaper of secrets and its deamonettes, the battle was quqly over with no survivers safe myself who were trampled in the initial assault.
I am now awakened by while i am being tended to by the slaves of my brother, it seems that one of his dark riders found me unconsius and brought me back to his camp where i will remain untill i am ready to journey to Ghrond and, if you wish, to act as your personal safety adviser.
I can be reached in the camp of my brother.

This letter is with a seal wery similar to the first but written in a much smoother hand.

I emplore you, my liege, to tell my brother not to join you in the city, he is gravely wounded but too blinded by hate to see that he will never make it into the city alive unless he is more healed up.

The Lord General is brought a package containg a leatherbound book engraved with a Black Lotus. It is the war journal of General Kala. The last entry reads as follows:

It is with great regret that I, Lord Deimozael of House Kith, Seneschal of House Velari, acting Commander of the Black Lotus Brigade, write in this journal. For my master, General Kala Kodai Velari the Unbeliever, Last Higborn of the illustrious House Velari, Lord of the Wrath Gate and Scourge of Arnheim, lies dead before me.

Her dying body was brought before us just after the 6th Gate fell. A shard of an Asur-forged blade was lodged in her chest. With such force was this death blow struck that the shard cannot be removed and her armor is forever locked in place. Thus shall she be sent to the Ice Tombs of Velari Keep, her body forever frozen in the armor of Druchii warlord.

It must be said that this noble Druchii died as she would have wished. Her last actions were to bring down the 6th Gate with her own hands and banish the Asur cowering back to their citadel. None could have asked for a more valiant and honorable death.

The last words she breathed into my ear were cryptic. An eternal riddle that I will ponder until my dying days. She said "b*stard called me lady". Surely it is a message of wisdom from the very lips of Khaine were I to but fathom its meaning.

I am assuming command of the Black Lotus regiments until they can be assigned to new tasks. The United First, formerly the 5th and 7th divisions will be handed to the command of Lord Colonel Karelon Lengoth in order that he may continue to press the hated cousins from Arnheim. The Honor Guard of Har Ganeth will be returned to Duke Tularc to await the pleasure of the Lord General of Khaine. The Drowenari shades will accompany the body of the General on her long journey back to the manor of her House. All other regiments that remain under the Black Lotus banner will form my own command, for I will avenge her.

As a final gesture, I am sending this journal to the Lord General of Khaine, Khael Vraneth, that the words and wisdom of General Kala Kodai of House Velari would not be forgotten by future warriors of the Druchii.

As Lord Melphular once said to her - "Death is as light as a feather. Duty is as heavy as a Mountain."

May your blades stay eternally wet,
Lord Deimozael of House Kith
Seneschal of House Velari

130th Day of the Civil War

The Pain, Veloran Erathai was indeed the figure in my dreams. however when he appeared in my appartments he found much to his surpirse me ready for him. i shall never forget his word.

"So Khael, you are ready to die!"

He lunged at me with his lakelui in one hand a a sheild in the other. laughing i ducked under the swipe and brought my draich for his head. However his sheild rose and as my draich struck it the symbol of slaanesh glowed bright. And to my horror my draich shattered just above the hilt. smiling at me Veloran whispered in my ear.

"You have no power now, fool"

undaunted i drew my sword and fought him for a long time until finally i forced my blade into a gap in his armour. roaring with pain he swung his sheild at me, as i fell to the floor my sword was knocked from my grasp. reaching out my hand closed on a hilt as he rose over me. with my fading strength i lifted the blade up as he fell upon me.

He let out a gurgling cry and i felt blood hit my face, looking up i saw the remnants of my driach imbeded in his chest. he smiled at me as i rose to look at him.

"You are the better General, i thank you for that. you have given me a good fight, now farewell."

He still lies upon the floor of that chamber, Tiamehk has given me her blessing to use Queen Hellebronn's chambers until i am healed. as For my Draich she has taken it into her keeping. She is muttering things about i sign. but she talks in babbles sometimes.

My sister is due here in two days but i do not think that her forces shall be enough to break this battle before the end of the year. this conflict goes on forever.

A scout rushes into camp, deftly weaving between cook fires and relaxing soldiers. Pulling up before the command tent, he passes on a simply folded letter

Lord Vraneth,

Our scouts have reported an army approaching on the south west side of the city. Thinking it was your sister, I had a welcome party ride out towards them. However, they quickly came back into camp, spurring their horses as if pursued by demons.

It seems the Annointed Democles and his armies have outflanked and outrun your sister, and are marching into your rearguard areas. If you do not react, our forces will be caught between the separate armies of the Cult.

What are your orders?

However i would prefer it if i knew that Democles was being watched. i shall Send a dispatch to Galeth Sieth, and order him to watch Democles and attack him if needed.

132nd Day of the Civil War.

My sister has managed to evade the forces of Lord Democles and as went to greet her i saw the look upon my face, As she handed me a bundle of cloth inside i found a book with the symbol of the black lotus upon it. Kala's Wardiary, with tears in her eyes she told me of what had happened at the 6th gate

The pain in my wounds is now, nothing compared to this.

Kala had attacked the very foundations of the gate when her forces save for thouse who are loyal to her, left. Under the orders of our king. undaunted she attacked the gates with the fabled gautlet of power, smilar to my brothers. However even as she began he sole destruction of the gate. a challenger appeared Enthardon. i shall find him if it is the last thing i do. even as kala fought him she was attacked from behind. and even as the towers of the 6th gate fell, Enthardon struck her down.

This has hurt me deeply, i had promised to meet her long ago but it seemed that Khaine had a different path for me instead i became the Lord General of Khaine. i should have gone south to meet kala long ag but now it is too late. but netherless i shall see her before she is laid to rest in her ice tomb at Velari Keep.

134th Day of the Civil War

It is over, I am exiled from Naggaroth. Our King has ordered it to be so. However it was not my king that gave the order however. It was Shadowblade the master of assassins. Twice now he has left messages for me but now I bear his mark upon my cheek. The Symbol of my Exile.

However, the mad Lonicera is dead. Shadowblade wounded her when she finally stepped over the line, to my surprise however it was not Shadowblade that killed her but her mistress. The Queen Morathi herself. Although we are victorious I am banished. The words that Shadowblade said to me I shall never forget until my dieing day.

“Vraneth, you are a zealot and you are much to blame for this … mess. But zealots can be useful, and that may yet be the case with you.”

He then tore his mark upon my left cheek and finished.

“One day, your King may call you home, but do not return until that time. You bear my mark, and I will know if you do. Make yourself worthy of when your King may have use of you. Now go!”

I left the hall with as much dignity as I had left, wishing bitterly I had the reflexes to deal with the assassin. But I did not. I am gathering the remnants of the 3rd and the 15th Legions of Har Ganeth and I shall march west to Kala’s Keep to pay my respects to her. After that I shall go south to Arnhelm and from there I shall take the black ark “Spear of Khaine” and leave my home.

This War diary I shall leave in the keeping of my sister. She is already talking about using it in a great book about the history of the civil war, Kala’s diary to will be included in this great volume so that the Warriors of Khaine will never forget their history and their victory in the War of Flesh and Blood. This will be the last entry by me in this diary as I am forced to leave the city at dawn. I shall leave copies of all the dispatches I have written to my allies over the years here and if any replies come they shall be left here. My sister Lelith shall sort these some time in the future.

The War of Flesh and Blood is over. I shall seek my redemption in the eyes of Khaine and verily in the eyes of Malekith. Eventually I shall return, but only when Khaine is under threat of war again or, unless I am re-called to take up my place as the Lord-General of Khaine.
