Game of the Month (Feb-Mar): Battlefleet Gothic

Post by Alkkrision »

Ok, in an attempt to get this forum more active, I'm stealing one of Ras' ideas for getting Lesser Races Tactics going, and created a game of the month feature.

So, lets start out with Battlefleet Gothic, I've noticed this game is quite common from one of my initial threads, and there are definately a few interested as well.

In light of this, label your fleet here, then possibly discuss what's in it, what the ships are generally used for, any tactics you use, and just generally what the sort of success record is for your fleet. I'll say something about my Dark Eldar at some point (possibly tomorrow I don't know). I'd just like to know I'm not the only one posting on this forum though :).

I love this game! I rarely get to play it though . . .

I generally use my Imperial fleet, led by my Emperor-class Battleship "Pride of Terra". I have never lost my flagship. Crippled a few times, but it has always survived.

Playing with the ordance limitations of one fighter/bomber/assault boat per active launch bay, I find that torpedoes are really valuable. There are far fewer fighters out there to bring them down. So other than my flagship, in games of 750-1500 points, I generally fill out the rest of my fleet with ships that carry torpedoes -- cobras, a Dominator-class carrier, Lunars, etc.

My goal is to get in close to the enemy and unload with all my torpedoes and bombers. The massive wave from the Emperor can put the hurt on just about anything. The nasty trick is when the enemy has fighters flying CAP to take out incoming torpedoes, I'll have as many cobras as needed break formation to fire individual salvos. I move these first to clear the CAP and make way for the big salvos.

My Imperial fleeet is about 3000 points, and I can also field fleets of about 2000 and 1500, respectively, of Chaos and Eldar.

FYI -- I refuse to play against Necrons. It's just no fun at all. Even when you win on victory points, the battlefield makes it look like you got slaughtered.

I play a marine fleet. Designed after the Dark Angels.

I have enough to field 2000pts all told. Battle barge, 6 strike cruisers, 9 gladius frigates, and 8 hunter destroyers.

When i first started i would field the cruisers seperately, but then realised with the low firepower the marine weapons have they have to be used in squadrons. preferably of 3.

and the ability to turn 90 is huge when u go all ahead full turn one, move 25cm turn two, and then turn 90 to give a full broadside from the strike cruisers.

3 bombardment cannons with firepower 3 is nothing to sneeze at when aimed at a closing capital ship.

The battle barge is an awesome weapon. Not as strong offencively as the imperial fleet battle ships, but like i said, the bombardment cannon is nasty. the hit on 4's crit on 4's has done more damage then anything else i have ever faced. its DISGUSTING!

marines have the armour to run towards the enemy and turn to blast em outta the stars. its a very aggressive list and i love it to death.

I love the way the Eldar work in GW's systems - usually they have a novel way of working but with a hefty downside if you don't use them properly.

I have a (largely unbuilt) fleet of:

Void Stalker
Shadow
2 Eclipses
3 Aconites
2 x 3 hemlocks
3 x 3 Nightshades

They have awesome weapons that pretty much guarantee significant damage, but if you get hold of them they're toast. Combined with the high manouvrability and movement rules, I think they would be very interesting to use.

I have painted a couple of ships:
Void Stalker
Shadow

Right, while my Sisters of Battle dry, I figure I'd get my Dark Eldar up.

The Poisoned Soul (Torture Class)
Soulflayer (Torture Class)

11 Corsair Class escorts, split into 2 units of 3 (phantom lance, 2 Impaler Assault Modules), and 1 unit of 5 with 3 souped up batteries and two phantom lances. Every ship in the fleet has mimic engines.

While the fleet itself is relatively fragile, it's not as fragile as the Eldar fleet, but still has some of the advantages of bog standard Eldar. So they're not likely to take critical hits, but they'll get shot down quicker. My general tactic with this fleet though is to use mimic engines to get forward, but out of range, then hope my opponent gets turn 1. I can only be hit by ordnance weapons, so my fleet will likely survive with minimal casualties. My turn 1, I'm alongside/behind the enemy fleet and firing at any potential gunships which are the absolute bain of Dark Eldar. Bracing for Impact first turn is wonderful though. With gunships dispatched, the Impalers are fired and start smashing into the Cruisers, causing potentially major damage, or at least withholding firepower, then the Torture Classes launch their bombers. As with amassed firepower, they can usually cripple 2 cruisers a turn, possibly even shooting them down. Dark Eldar can potentially have the sheer power, but as I say with such low hitpoints and being mainly escort based, they could have problems in this respect.

Dark Eldar: Mainly based for scenarios, such as planet capturing. For a straight up firefight, they may have problems seeing as one mistake can cost them the game, or at least see half the fleet getting blasted.

Quick update, I've got me a few Impalers for my fleet made out of Dark Eldar bits, so they're rather spikey, and have the potential to slam far into the ship, then can make contact and allow a position for the Warriors to run in and start throwing Haywire Grenades into the plasma drive to see what'll happen. That sort of thing.

Anyway, this topic's gotten a bit dead, and I'm sure there's more Gothic players/potential Gothic players around :P.
