Missing 8th, not interested in AoS. Other fantasy games?

Are there any other fantasy games that I can use my GW druchii minis for? I know about Kings of War from Mantic. What else is there?

Hordes of the Things is simple and reasonably cheap. It can use literally any miniatures for it (I've seen Thomas the Tank Engine armies...). You just need to blue-tac your minis to a base or be careful to move them all together as it's abstracted out a level from Warhammer and things move as "elements".

Have you looked at Raging Heroes or Avatars of War - I think they have one.

Not much of a gamer myself but I do like the idea of creating one!

It's hard to come up with an original idea though GW have captured all the good ideas.

MOD Note: moved to the appropriate forum. (Feel free to discuss any ideas on other games here!)

Kings of War seems to get a lot of interest from Warhammer players. I'd check that one out... I know I will :)

Or there's always that old classic: 8th edition Warhammer. It was run by a company called, I think, Games Workshop. The game had a lot of followers, but then one day all of the folks in the corporate office came down with some kind of viking obsessed madness, which led them to can the game and release some half-rated rip off called "Age of..." give me a second, it's on the tip of my tongue. It was the guy who was really dull in the Empire lore that no one cared about whatsoever... "Sigmar: that was it, "Sigmar". Anyway, some veterans of the pre-viking madness days still venture out to play their old favourite game once in a while.

You could also always use your models for D&D.

Red... is right.
I'll keep playing 8th edition with my friends. I'll play some 7th ed also.

My group is sticking to 8th while testing out AoS. I expect this limbo to stay for a while.
One player asked to try out some Lord of the Rings mechanics, and we'll see how that one works.

Finally, I do think migrating to a supported system is more fun than sticking to an outdated one, but that path needs to be taken only after we have exhausted the outdated one :)

Ya. I'm just looking for something to get my community into. It's all 40k here... >:(
The non supported 8th ed means eventually we will run out of players. Trying to convince new people to buy 800 dollars worth of models to play a non supported game is difficult... to say the least.

Kings of War has a notably lower barrier of entry financially. The rules are up for free, so feel free to try it out. 2d6 Andy made a universal battle demo of it here:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kbxk8-cm43Q
I had a brief look through the rules and it looks alright: simple, to the point, not very complex. It doesn't feel like Warhammer, but it looks like a viable alternative.

Personally, I'm not a big fan of the KoW miniature range. Some of them look good and but only few models do. Luckily the game isn't as restrictive about its minis :)

Avatars of War seem to be a similar deal with the minis: hit or miss. Some great, some just don't suit me. The best ones come at a high price unless you get some sort of a special deal. I haven't been able to figure out its rules partly because of the confusing website.

Armies of Arcana... Well its rules don't come free so I have no idea what it looks like. The miniature range looks like a trip back to the 70's or 80's.

If you ask me, only Warmahordes comes across as a professional production (aside from Warhammer). They are very cheap on the online artwork and picture gallery of their minis though, which is quite disastrous for me. It simply doesn't "sell" the product. Without a store nearby to see the minis, it feels like I'd be buying blindly.

Sliding off topic, but warhammer CE and Warhammer 8.5 are the best '9th ed' rules I've seen so far. I spotted the Swedes rules, but haven't looked at them yet. (not a member of TWF, but might be solid additions to the thread)

I'm not sure how KoW will do with the tournament scene from WHFB - Its a common view that KoW is a little too simplistic. Which is a shame, because that's what drew me in, but I do feel the need for another game to play side by side (assuming that I continue my renewed interest in tabletop games).

I played my first game of Kings of War. It will NOT be my last. What a fun game!! If you haven't played, it took me an hour at 1am to learn the rules. If I can learn a game at 1 AM, then, fully sober the next day, have an extremely fun game? Count me in. I think I'll be playing KoW and sigmar with my minis. TWO GAMES WITH 1 SET OF MINIS??? THE BEST.

That's an excellent idea. Get a community together to design your own game that fits your own needs. It's how it was done 'back in the day', and how GW got started. Who knows, it might be the start of something big. A community of gamers participating in the development of the games they play, what's not to like? I hope you find enough like-minded individuals to get it going. I'd be envious, but it doesn't sound like a gaming group where I would be happy (or welcome). I personally don't like the 'competitive' way of thinking that seems to be at the heart of it, but I love the DIY creative spirit of it and I would love to see it succeed! :)

It's a great idea, KillerK, but a colossal undertaking. Best of luck if you decide to go ahead with it :)

It's still very much WIP but it's a conversion of the Hail Caesar historical ruleset (by none other than Rick Priestley) to a fantasy setting. Mind you, it's completely different in that it's more of a command-and-control game than WHFB. For instance, in order for your units to move you need to roll a leadership test, if not, too bad. Not up everyone's alley but it does simulate a real battle much better than WHFB ever did.

If you want to try Kings of War, I recommand http://kow2.easyarmy.com/ to create your list, it includes the full armies (not just the samples), as well as the artefacts, and the Twilight Kin army list (Mantic dark elves) is included (second row, under the "(Kin)" Tab)

Some other suggestions:

God of Battles by Wargames Foundry looks rather fun: http://www.wargamesfoundry.com/our-ranges/gob
So does Song of Blades and Heroes (http://www.ganeshagames.net/product_inf ... cts_id=227) and Battlesworn by Ganesha Games (http://www.ganeshagames.net/product_inf ... cts_id=227)
Grenadier's Fantasy Warriors may or may not be alive, I can't tell, but check it out anyway: https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/fant ... oes#/story and http://www.nobleknight.com/ViewProdLine ... enreID_E_0
And Iron Winds of War has rules for free at: https://www.ironwindmetals.com/d/node/52
