Vampires, can they survive with only 1 necromancer?
Heyo,
Every Vampire Counts list, with the exception of the SoC Sylvanian List, always has atleast 2 necromancers. Often its a Vampire Count and 3 necromancers. So my question to you is, could VC survive with only a Lord/Count and a single Necromancer as your magical support? What would you use in the army differently now that you couldn't reliably raise as many extra troops or the extra movement? What tactics would you use instead?
Thanks in advance,
Jeff

For 2k, I can see many lists surviving with only one Necromancer. However, thiose lists need to be designed in another fashion. Almost all Blood Dragon Armies I see have 0-1 necromancers, and they fare fairly well.
With a single count wiz, you get dispel. And that's about it. He can take scrolls, but don't expect to succeed in many spellcasting activities. As long as your army isn't too vulnerable to enemy magic, I believe a VS army can do quite well with only one necromancer. However, I do believe that necromancers, or the Necromancy Lore is a very deadly and tactically appealing one. Without it, you're losing a very good edge of the entire army.

My brother's list has only one Necro, and he's doing quite well. He has a Necro Lord (IIRC with Periapt, 4+ Stupid Ward, extra spell, immunity to first miscast and -1 AS common sword), lvl 2 Necro (Book, Scroll) and a Wraith with Cursed Book.
It may not look like much, but it is actually quite efective.

On the Tournament last spring I had Vampire and 2 Necromancers. There were also 2 more VC players and they both made better resould than me. each of them had Vampire Lord (one had von Carstein, other Strigoi), one Necromancer and one non-magic hero (von Carstein had Thrall BSB, Strigoi had Wight Lord).
My last game was against the von carstein and he completely canceled my magic and beat me by solid. He had 2 scrolls (one on Necromancer, one on Vampire).
When I came home, I changed my list - I have included Necrarch Lord and only one Necromancer. Second hero is Wraith.
I have only 1 scroll and to be honest, I don't need 2nd that bad. I made my characters cheaper and I saved points to invest in other elite Units.
With this magic, I can still dominate against many opponents (2-3 Lvl.2 mages, 2-3 Scrolls) and Magic Heavy armies can give me hard time with magic (Slann; 4th generation and Lvl.2 Skink priest).

Fluff is cool, fluff is funny, fluff is nice. But fluff will put no dinner on your plate!
I think you could (though I reckon you'd have to play defensive magic if you want any success) but I don't see the point. I find the Undead magic the best aspect of the army. Why would you want only 1 necromancer? You can still have a count, a hero level fighty character and two necromancers at 2000pts.
It is better to light a candle, than to curse the darkness...
