Death of an On-line Army Builder . . .

Post by Dyvim tvar »

The on-line army builder at www.thegreatuncleanone.com seems to be gone. The site has been down for a few days now. It was outdated for a lot of armies, but was current and easy to use for Dark Elf lists.

Anyone know of other, good on-line army builders I could use instead?

Noticed that myself today :( It was a lot easier than trying to do it by hand! RIP greatuncleanone.

just use Microsoft Word or a pad of paper.

Hmm, a shame, GUO was one of the easyest Army Builders I know... Wargames Japan had a good one too, IIRC.

I'll look up a link and edit it in.

Tijminator

Edit: This is the one I found. I hope it still woks, for I haven't used it in a while.

A little OT, but does anyone know a good 40K army builder?

I've used Excel in the past which beats pulling out the calculator or worse yet pulling off your socks to count on your fingers AND toes. It was just a lot easier using the website. Do you think GW shut them down, or they just gave up?

Tijminator -- that one seems to work. Not quite as user-friendly as the GUO, but thatnks for the find!

Just copy my armylists ha ha ha.

Wolf Lair is the only armybuilder worth using. You can download the demo to atleast figure out the points costs of units quickly. Then you just combine with a calculator for the bigger army tally. I recommend buying it, I did, it iwas cheap and will last forever. IT get's updated too. The best thing i've ever invested in.

Alright, I've been a prominent poster on TGUO for a few years now, and I think I can clear up some stuff. TK, the admin at TGUO, stopped paying for the site and updating it nearly two years ago. Just recently, however, the URL expired. He made an announcement in the message board saying that he was torn between renewing it or letting it expire. He likely decided to let it expire because he hadn't updated it since Ogre Kingdoms.

One of the problems with that one, seems to be that I can give my Treeman Ancient the Sword of Striking. They don't seem to have completely set the rules on magic items. Everything else seems to work ok, though I didn't really check the book to make sure points are ok.

The huge problem about making an army builder is IP policy. GW doesn't just allow anyone to go ahead and make a program that nearly replaces an army handbook. Things such as points and validity checks aren't supposed to be included.
Making an army builder without point cost and validity check is overly simple, and practically useless.

To make calculations is one thing, to do the same thing over and over for each change in your army list gets very tiresome. I prefer writing a program that does it for me than doing it myself. hah! :P

I've done it so often I don't even have to really think about it :). That said when I eventually transfer the rough idea to Excel I set it up so as I can tweak and play a little without having to worry about changing all the amounts each time.

I've never seen the use for an army builder.
Most of the time you don't even need to use a calculator.
It's not that hard is it?

It's just a lot faster than writing it out by hand, or even typing the list.

Arent there some talented people in this forum who could make a druchii.net verision?
By leaving e.g. the points costs out but making it an easy thing to add would mean that you woud still need the army book but able avoid the mind numbing calculationsl

Actually, the part of checking the validity of a list is against IP policy of GW. I asked them :) Making a simple list proggy shouldn't be too hard, but without any checking.. is it still usefull?
