Why kind of Dice do you prefer?

Post by Swab »

I was just wondering if anyone had any thoughts on this?

What do you think is best and why?

Sharp/soft angles and small/medium

I prefer medium sized for rolling and small for wound counting. Rolling 10 large dice feel better than rolling 10 small dice for some reason. I like sharp angles, because the soft angles continue rolling for longer than the norm. But either works.

Also, do you need to have all the same color dice or just random works? I can tolerate random dice, even though alot of the people at my store just can't get their minds past it for some reason.

I like Chessex which are small and rounded edges though they do roll lower than they should (proven).

If I buy new dice I'll be purchasing some casino dice (large and sharp edges) as they roll average.

I'm with Azure and I highly prefer Chessex. In fact that is the only kind that is sold in my shop. There is a company that has been banned from use once our store owner found out the company made weighted dice.

I don't know about you but some of my Chessex roll pretty damn well. I'm notorious for my good luck and at worst average luck with dice.

Many dies are needed for WH and WH40K.
A combination of different colours are very useful, as often some of the rolls need to reach different values: red dies for the knights, white dies for the cold ones ; or black dies for one attack per each knight, three brown dies for the Lord.
Very small dies are useful to represent the hit points left to your hydra or your Lord, the dice would be left near the miniature.
I use a very big one to show which turn we are.
So a multitude of dies, with two numerous sets (a dozen) and half a dozen of distinctly coloured dies are good to have.

Said that, the bigger the dies, the more room they take!
Small ones are nice.

What are the standard GW ones? They have allways worked fine for me.

Big giant metal ones with lots of spikes which need a forklift just to roll it over.

Ahem. Just normal small dice.

I prefer large dice, so I can avoid putting my glasses on. I also use fixed-length rules to measure things, for the same excuse ;)

I use 12mm (small) koplow dice. With sharp edges like casino dice.

I've noticed that i have gotten better rolls with them than my chessex. (based on I would say 10 games each).

I use the larger dice, solid colors with numerals on them. They are easy to read from across the table much better than pips. An added benefit is they don't look like anyone else' dice so people don't scoop them up by accident.

With the new PoD spell, several different colors will be helpful to differeniate between pool, specific wizard dice and PoD dice.

Mordru: I've found you dont particularly need Pod dice. Usually it gets dispelled and when it doesn't those dice are the first ones I use!

You may not need them but they will be nice to have. I agree that using them first is the proper procedure. I certainly don't want to end the phase with any still hanging around. If I start running a lvl 4 with black staff, which I intend to try soon, then they may be closer to necessary.

To answer the question: Standard GW-style dice are the ones for me.

To further the discussion: Black dice for PoD and red dice for sacrificial dagger :D

Casino dice - just a shame that they cost a fortune and chip.

I prefer to use big White and red dice, as they seem nice and dramatic.
Although after winning a set of small red ones for coming last at a tournament I have been using these although not to any considerable effect.

I also have 1 die at home which I almost never use as it always rolls 1's. However it isn't weighted or anything as if you take a Ld test it will automatically come out 6's.
This die is just pure evil!

I like medium sized dice that have a nice sharp edge. Of course, if I start rolling badly then I just grad a handful of dice from the back up bag and roll them.

As for colour I usually try to have all the same colour to start out with, but then by the end of the game I have changed my dice so many times that it seems to be a hodgepodge of dice.

go figure.

Small dice dont seem dramatic enough, I like normal size.

Sharp edges make you feel like a jerk when they land on a 6 and dont roll at all, like you just tossed it down that way on purpose!

My current army has max magic, so I have 4 red 2 black, 2 green, 2 blue, 2 white, to differentiate each wizards dice plus pool dice, and I set them by each caster at the start of the magic phaze.

Most import thing is readability.. having an opponent rolling fast with dice I cant see the pips, and picking them up to roll for wounds, I dont know if Im being cheated.. like perhaps he 'thought' he needed 3s to hit me, but I cant correct him if I dont catch him.

I own a mix of red, black and white GW dice for markers and keeping track of in-game things like a turn counter and wounds. My gaming dice are mottled blue and purple small smooth agile - they often work out to be very good at rolling high (including LD tests!)

I'm going to get some red and gold dice (marbled effect) for when I take a khainite based force :D

I realy dont care what dice i use, most of mine are mixed up and stolen from many board games and the likes.

I just dont use the single one thats wooden red with gold spots, and frankly neither does my brother. It somehow when this die gets rolled it taints all the other dice to roll REALY bad i.e. 5 front WE not landing a single hit on skinks! (hatred was included) That die now only gets play as a wound marker
...Well thats the end of my post
