Hey,
it has recently been brought to my attention that apparently your general has to be the character model with the highest leadership value (see BRB p. 107).
Is this true?
Who is the boss?

It's true, and it's been true since... pretty sure since the game started.
There are some exceptions but they are always clearly stated (like aforementioned Assassins and BSB, or Tomb Kings characters other than Tomb King/Prince)

High Elves used to have a rule where the general of their army was determined randomly among their characters; needless to say, it was quite annoying when your Leadership 10 Prince was stuck doing nothing while your high and mighty Level 2 assumed control of the army.
Thankfully, that particular rule is gone. The vast majority of armies, as has been mentioned, use the highest available Leadership to serve as general.

just to note there is no rule preventing the hirophant/ caster (tomb priest arch priest ?) to be general anymore, there use to be but, that has been washed clean
