Seeking some Woc advice.
All,
in my gaming group, we've embarked on a rather ambitious mission: we're to build and paint up an entire new army in one year time. So by 1/8/2015, I'll have to have ready a full 2500 pts WH-army, a chosen race i've never played before.
My eye fell on Warriors of Chaos.
So, given the fact that I have only 361 days left to make me a decent list, buy the models and get them painted, AND that I have no experience whatsoever regarding Warriors of Chaos (haven't played with or against them), I'm looking for some advice: what is a good place to start?
I'll be picking up the armybook tomorrow, so I thought let's get things going already. I've checked the ETC-lists, (I know they are restricted comp-rules and so on, but they give an idea what the do's and don'ts are) and I've noticed:
- LOTS of warhounds
- LOTS of chariots (both regular and gorthings)
- 3-4 hard hitting characters and casters.
- units of trolls
- random: some infantry, some hellcanon,
but very little to no "troops": how do they win combats?? are their chariots that good?
so, any and all advice would be greatly appreciated!

Re: Seeking some Woc advice.
Yes, the chariots are that good.
Combine impact hits with the attacks of the halberd-wielding Chaos Warriors riding in them, and the Chariots can do a lot of damage on the charge. And they are hard to hurt, especially Nurgle-marked Gorebeast chariots, so they can often hold up a ranked unit. Great value for the points.

oh, and they all (litteraly: ALL) have skullcrushers. So I take it they are mandatory too...

I wouldn't say skullcrushers are mandatory, there just very good. I prefer the knights tbh, easier to get a LoS for any characters riding with them.
I love mark of Khorne chariots, absolutely brutal on the charge and come from the core tax.
I'd say trolls are only worth taking IMHO if your running throgg, to make them core.

Re: Seeking some Woc advice.
Are we talking non comp'ed warriors?
Daemon prince with wings, 1+ armor save, charmed shield, soul feeder and lvl 4 lore of death
OR
Lord on mount (daemonic optional) with 4+ ward, mark of tzeentch and 3rd eye
+ a lvl 4 sorcerer.
Optional lvl 1-2 support wizard with 2+ armor and maybe mr(1)
2 exalted heroes on daemonic mount. One is BSB. Both has 4+ ward and mark of tzeentch. (If you go with the lord on mount, only one hero can have the 4+ and mark, the other must get by with 5+ and mark )
3 nurgle chariots
12 tzeentch warriors (or more if you feel like it)
2 gorebeast
OR
large troll block which the heroes can run with
3-5 skullcrushers
Hellcannon optional
Not very model-heavy either. Should be "easy" to paint

Re: Seeking some Woc advice.
WoC is proabably the 'easiest' army to complete in a year.
lord/caster
fully kitted deamon prince
bsb on daemonic mount
core
5 chariots mark of nurgle is about 625 points
special
3 chimarae fully upgraded scaly skin, breath
rare 2 models
shaggoths/ cannon/ giants/ what you like
13 model army
personally i like wy brothers setup of 18 nurgle warriors. 2 units dogs.
1 unit horsemen. 2 chariots 1 chimara 2 gorebeast chariots bsb and i think 3-4skullcrushers.
point is you can get away with VERY few models if you want, but still be hard hitting

Thanx for the example-lists. As I hope to get a book today, I'll definately look up these options. But Iike most of it from the sound of it....
From the ashes a fire shall be woken
A light from the shadow shall spring
Renewed shall be the blade that was broken
the crownless again shall be king.

Re: Seeking some Woc advice.
So, yesterday I got my hands on the rulebook. What i forgot to mention in the first post, there is a half-way point somewhere in february or zo where we have to present a finished 1500pts force. So that will be my first target now.
the 1500 lists as it stands now, open for revisions...
Sorcerer lord (scroll, talis of protect) @340pts
Hero (BSB, mark of tzeentch, daemonic mt, AoD, scaled skin, great weapon, soul feeder, third eye of tzeentch) @276pts
5 warhounds @30
5 warhounds @30
15 warriors (FC, mark of nurgle, halberds) @315
gorebeast chariot (mark of nurgle) @135
gorebeast chariot (mark of nurgle) @135
3 skullcrushers (enscorcelled weapons, musician) @234
Leaves me with 5pts spare...
Your thoughts?

Well. Its amongst the most dirty you can possibly build. So yeah, go for it.
Name: Ladry (female)
Class: Mage (Pyromancer)
Equipment: Staff, longsword, dagger, 20 gold, insignia ring.
Skills: Power of Aqshy (2), defensive figthing
WS4, S2, T3, D4, I6.

Re: Seeking some Woc advice.
I found an error: the exalted hero now has 40pts of gifts, where he can only have 25. So away goes the scaled skin (since i'm counting on his ward save anyway), and add the familiar to the sorcerer. Makes 1500 to the point.

Re: Seeking some Woc advice.
This is a list I'm using, its also ETC legal, The characters are very efficient.
Lord trades protection for speed and damage potential. He is a combat monster, there is just a few models in the game we will not take head on, do to having only S5. He kills anything that has armour, like knights MS, MI infantry, heroes, war machines. While my bsb has S7 so the things the lord might die to, the BSB steps up and takes on (deamon princes, Vamp lords, and a few other models that either have high T or massive damage out put, or 2+ ward vs flaming attacks).
Both heroes have 1+ AS and 3++ ward. T5 and 3W. Making them very difficult to kill. I run my mage on tzeench magic, as the army has real no shooting what so ever. Tzeemch magic helps me take out war machines, redirectors and other targets I dont want to be chasing around the board.
The rest of the list are re directors and support for the heroes. As one game vs a dwarven gun line at the beginning of my turn 2 I had 3 models on the board, all of my heroes, rest were shot off. By the end of 6th turn the only models on the board were my 3 heroes.
Chaos Lord on Disc of Tzeentch 370 Pts
General; Chaos Armour
Hellfire Sword
Talisman of Endurance
Soul Feeder
Third Eye of Tzeentch
Charmed Shield
Chaos Sorcerer on Daemonic Mount 270 Pts

Re: Seeking some Woc advice.
Very interesting list and idea, KillerK. I was a bit dissapointed with tzeentch magic since you have a chance of giving regen to your opponent, and i that was someting i didn't want to do. Doesn't that bother you?
Also, how do you cope with those lists that typically feature two big combat blocks? (Like we DE do with witchelves + Execs). Can your characters handle those?

Re: Seeking some Woc advice.
Tzeench magic is not for big unit's, its there to kill support units, and warmachines. Combo charge say lord and 2 chimeras in to anything and it will make a dent. If a small unit is hit by a spell and you kill off 3 out of 5 light cav, giving them a chance to get 6+ regen or an additional d3 hits is fine by me.
Say a big unit of infantry, I would first use chaff to delay them and place 2 templates on a unit, then next turn throw ever thing at it including the kitchen sink . a unit of 8 trolls I usually wipe out in one combat round. Big blocks go down to thunder stomps, while the lord kills anything with armour.

Re: Seeking some Woc advice.
You could take Lore of Metal against them. I heard thats pretty good against them.
Re: Seeking some Woc advice.
But tzeench lore covers a army weakness, lack of shooting. While lore of metal is useless in that area.
The army can deal with armour, and big units, but it struggles with support units and war machines. That is why I went for tzeench magic over other available lores. With 3 spells you have a very decent chance to end up with gateway in most of you games. You have a very good default MM, and piercing bolt is great vs warmachines. plus a template spell vs large units of infantry, and it can be cast in to combat witch is amazing .
Most support units have T3 and they getting hid with d6 hits and then have 50% chance to take another d3 wounds is excellent. Even if they gain 6+ regen, it really doesn't help the unit in any way, as it is crippled anyways. On top of that you can freely target units with ward saves, as they can use regen or ward, so even in giving regent of 5/6+ changes nothing.
And lastly you lord has flaming attacks and the highest Initiative in the army. in a combo charge he will take down any regens, and the rest will slaughter what is left.
