yes he did but they had an * instead of gets hot which meant
there was no relevant codex entry and he didn't have the rulebook with him.
"these weapons have additional rules, check the relevant codex entry on the warhammer 40,000 rulebook for details.

on a roll of a 1 with one shot
on rolls on 1 and 2 when rapid firing
or rolls of 1, 2 or 3 when firing 3
BUT WHERE IS IT IN THE CODEX!

The problem with the IG codex is that it refers to the 3rd ed rulebook, which contained the rules for the 'core' 40k weapons.
That isn't the case for the 4th ed rulebook, unfortunately.
But it was and is the case that all imperial plasma weapons have the Gets Hot rule.

Take it from someone who uses 16 plasma guns in his 40K army - they get hot. Suffice it to say that there is an issue with the codex (and you're likely to get 5th ed 40K before any fix to it), but if he's going to do that do you and be a complete ass with that kind of rule lawyering, then just don't play the guy. Its obvious that the intent is for it to get hot and everybody I've ever seen has played it that way and demanded it be played that way.

Yeah, thing is for him if his Plasma Guns overheat, he'll know about it, Guardsmen can't really take it. So with his idea of rules lawyering, his Plasma Guns will blow your infantry away with no negative consequences, which is shocking for IG. He should have enough lasguns as it is. If he's going to do that, get a piece of paper and some blu-tac and cover up your plasma gun "Gets Hot" entry. Then claim yours don't either.
That'll show him.

16? Is that all?
I have 44 in my 1500pt army...
And yes, they do get hot. But usually they get killed by the enemy first so who cares?!

Nah, I've heard of his army, it are drop troops, IIRC with that two special weapon doctrine. Basically as much plasma + a few melta's (I guess) as you can fit in an army. Often destroys more of his own troops than the enemy does. Doesn't sound fun to play against to me, but whatever.

Space Marines have a two special weapon trait, IG don't. I'd like to know how one would get 44 plasma guns without the Last Chancers. SWS, veterans, grenadiers...?
Count them:
Painted in 2013: 500

Command sections can have 5 - four plasma guns and a pistol; veterans can have 3 each, and no doubt a bunch of special weapons teams on top.
So with three minimum platoons you could already have 21 plasma weapons, a further 9 from three vet squads and then add HQ stuff (up to 5 in the command HQ again) and further units to taste.
I know I've seen Ant's list, so its certainly doable with a 'conventional' army.

I'm sorry if I'm being a pain, but I don't think special weapon squads can take plasma guns.. It doesn't say you can in my codex.. I think the best (and cheesiest way) is in a command squad and/or a veteran squad of 5 models .and no doubt a bunch of special weapons teams on top.

Holy shiz! I never thought of that one. Wonder if it is an misprint or an cheese-blocker (dunno how cheesy PG is)?

yeah,
i play a gurad player and his command squad has 3 plasma guns and a plasma pistol in, and this totals about 80 points, and it killed 6 of my 7 man chaos terminator squad (with mark of tzeench), they are deadly and a massive pain in the backside

Here's the link to the list since everybody is still guessing. And no, I don't have any last chancers or special weapon teams. Just lots of guard and some vets.

Yeah, that's it. I like plasma, but I don't like it THAT much. Being a dark eldar player, I've always been more impressed with heavy bolters so I've got a pile of them as well. That, and my group convinced me to tone it down with the plasma (I had 25 or so with my original list).
Your list looks pretty similar to mine, though I diversified with the weapons and refused to use any vehicles. I also didn't bother with plasma pistols. 4 plama guns in the command squad is pretty nasty - sweet.
