1500 point catachan army

Post by Deadlydeception »

Hello all. After spending several years avoiding finishing my catachan imperial guard army, I am finally going to get around to finishing it. I was wondering what you think of the following army list. Keep in mind I am going for a themed list, so the hardened fighters has to stay.

Well, what do you think? Is this a balanced list that is capable of taking on all possible opponents, or am I going in the complete wrong direction?

I just remembered that my snipers no longer hit on a 2+, so they are fairly useless. I think that I will downgrade the lascannons to missile launchers and change the sniper team to a heavy bolter team.

The new list is

HQ

Command Platoon

Command Squad

Heroic senior with frag, bolter, fist
Master voxman and frag
Vet with storm bolter and frag
Vet with bolt pistol and frag
Vet with company standard, bolter, carapace armour, and frag

2 with flamers and frag
1 with a demo charge and frag

Mortar squad
3 mortars
hardened fighters 95 pts

Anit infantry Squad
3 heavy bolters
hardened fighters 95 pts

Anti Tank Squad
3 missile launchers
hardened fighters 110 pts

Comissar with MC plasma pistol, power weapon, and frag 71 pts

Personally, I would take the rough terrain mods off the basilisks and pay the points for indirect fire...that would let you use jungle as cover/concealment.

Are you expecting to play alot of jungle battles with your Catachans? I built my army (under the old Codex Catachan, and the new IG book) under that impression and they work great at my house, but on other boards they are hit or miss because I held to the jungle fighter theme. I also built my heavy weapons units to start laying death at 48" with the auto cannons and basilisk, the heavy bolters, sniper rifles, and mortars at 36", lasguns at 24 and below. On top of that, when rules allowed, I had harrassing units in the trees with heavy flamers and lasguns to prep a unit for assault. Shotguns aren't a bad deal when you can take them, 2 shots and an assault. Heavy flamer sentinels with rough terrain mods can cause some damage too, especially since they negate cover. Remember that at BS 3, template weapons can be your friend.

Well, its good to see some Catachan players still around. I hope your list works out for you.

Thanks for the reply.

I seriously doubt that I will ever get a real jungle battle in with my catachans. Nobody wants to roll difficult terrain tests for a whole game, and my brother plays an all jump infantry blood angel army.

A unit of heavy flamer sentinels would be awesome, but I'm not sure what to get rid of in my list, I think I might have to go up to 2000 points to get everything I want...

Do you find that having weapons with under 48" range is limiting? The enemy should only be 24" away, shouldn't they?

I probably could live without the rough terrain mods on my basilisks, but I'm not sure I want the indirect fire upgrade. 36" minimum range might be a bit to restricting on a four foot by five foot table.

Thanks again for your imput. It is good to find somebody else who doesn't play cadian :)

Jungle tables still have open areas and roads for clear movement, they are just the minority. I'd also recommend more squads since the focus in 5th is back on troop choices...you're squads will get donkey stomped trying to defend objectives.

I don't find weapons under 48" limiting, but I do like to start tagging the opposition as far out as possible. The extra range allows you more coverage across the battle field, not just straight ahead into the enemies deployment zone.

I see what you're saying with the indirect, I didn't know your usual table size. You can still have indirect and fire direct however. I'd remove a flamer from the chimera to add a heavy bolter, that would give you a little stand off in case you are being defensive. Flamers are good, but you'll rarely get 2 shots with it off on the same opponent, because usually an assault is imminent. Your platoon command looks intimidating, just make sure that you get the charge so that you can fire them...if you get charged they will be useless.

I hope that helps you out some more.

Hello again.
I may be able to get in some jungle fight battles eventually, but it still looks pretty unlikely. How do you reconcile the out dated rules with the new true line of sight method? I'm thinking of keeping the 6'' limit.

Anyway, I got the Catachan battle force and I have updated my list accordingly:

HQ

Command Platoon

Command Squad
Heroic senior with, bolter, fist
Vet medic with lasgun
2 more lasguns
Vet regimental standard, bolter,
Hardened fighters 114 pts

Special weapon support squad
3 with laspistol, and close combat weapon
2 with flamers
1 with a demo charge
Hardened fighters 78 pts

Fire Support Squad
3 autocannons
3 lasguns 95 pts

Anti-Tank Squad
3 missiles
3 lasguns 95 pts

Mortar Support Squad
3 mortars
3 lasguns 80 pts

Commissar with MC plasma pistol, power weapon, 70 pts

Elites

Hardened Veterans
1 shotgun
1 veteran seargent with power weapon, laspistol, and krak grenade
3 grenade launchers
hardened fighters 93 pts

Troops

Infantry Platoon

Command squad
Junior officer with plasma pistol, power weapon and krak grenade
4 with flamers
Hardened Fighters 96 pts

Infantry Platoon
8 lasguns
one missile launcher with frag
one flamer with frag
Hardened Fighters 96 pts

Infantry Platoon
8 lasguns
one autocannon
one flamer
Hardened Fighters 96 pts

Infantry Platoon
8 lasguns
one lascannon
one flamer
Hardened Fighters 106 pts

Armoured Fists

Armoured Fist Squad
sergeant with shotgun
8 lasguns
one melta gun
Hardened Fighters 85 pts

Chimera with heavy flamer, multi laser, and a rough terrain mod 90 pts

Fast Attack

Sentinel
Heavy flamer, hardened fighter 50 pts

Sentinel
Heavy flamer, hardened fighter 50 pts

Heavy Support

Basilisk with smoke launchers 103 pts

Basilisk with smoke launchers 103 pts

1499 points total.

you will notice that my 'killer' HQ unit is now much less potent. I think this is the right decision, because I mainly face space marines who would waste me no matter what in close combat. Also, I've added another troop unit for capturing and such.

Thoughts?
