Horus Heresy RPG - Anyone interested?

Post by Kinslayer »

I am planning a couple of new sideline RPG games for the new year, as well as the Blood Bowl RPG which is ongoing and those held by other members. I narrowed it down to two choices, of which I will likely only play one, although running both is an option if the demand is there. That is the purpose of these threads, just to draw in interest and get an idea on who will be interested in what.

There have already been a couple of 40k RPGs on the site, but neither of them were set in the 31st millenium and played out by Space Marines! I've been thinking for a long time about running a Horus Heresy RPG, and have decided if anyone wants to play it to go ahead with the idea. It will be set on Istvaan V at the time of the Dropsite Massacre, and players will be part of a specialist squad from one of the three loyalist legions (Raven Guard, Salamanders or Iron Hands). I'm leaning towards the Raven Guard, my personal favourites, but I will run with another if that's what players want.

Being a specialist squad you will have access to a wider range of weaponry than the humble boltgun, and the story will run that your drop pod is shot down upon entering the battle and your squad sergeant killed. You land off target alone in the chaos (no pun intended), and have to fight your way back out towards the place where reinforcements will turn up in the form of the Night Lords, Word Bearers, Iron Warriors and Alpha Legion! Horus Heresy fans will already know what happens if you get there.

If you think it might interest you, please say so here this week.

Come on Kinslayer, I have a family to feed, stop making these RPGs I want to play.
This seems interesting, though I would rather have my pick of the chaos legions over the loyalist ones. I assume, with the battle being set, that this would just be a short game?

I thought you might be interested mate. I'm just about to pick up Age of Darkness (yes I'm behind I know) so no spoilers please from the latest books!

The trouble I had planning it with a chaos legion is what would be the purpose of the players? To run around shooting people and causing havoc? I suppose it could work, but at least by playing loyalists you have a fixed storyline in place with trying to fight your way out of the massacre. The other option was to have players pick any of the legions which were present, and have a ramshackle bunch of survivors come together and form a group. Deciding whether to turn traitor will be your choice in any situation, but we'd just end up with PVP combats until the group died out.

What do you think is the best way to run it?

It does sound temping but I really don't have the time, personally were it me I would allow people to choose from the legions, maybe even including the Sons of Horus/Lunar wolves. It might lead to some more interesting discussion and interaction with mutual mistrust and differing combat doctrines (this being pre Codex Astartes of course). Like I say I wish I could play but...
Moding a group of Druchii.net players is much like directing the musical 'Cats' using actual cats. Frustrating, difficult, chaotic but ultimatley satisfying and a great deal of fun.

I'm sure you could find the time ;) Okay I am happy to let people pick any legion and have them all end up in the same place during the RPG.
