Cannis suppressed a sigh as the Cadet Commissar began following his men; it wasn't that he particularly disliked the boy, but such men tended to be a little hot headed and their role was not to charge a fortified position with nothing but flak armour and faith to protect them. Besides, what was the point in being the sheriff if the police commissioner was in town?

None the less Blake was with him and an extra man was an extra man whether he was under Cannis' command or not; and as they carefully approached the edge of the woods to look out over the enemies' position it became clear that that would need all the men they could get.

They were not particularly fearsome fortifications, not for a squad of astartes or a battalion with armoured or air support, but for a squad of men with equipment little better than their enemies and outnumbered to boot it was good enough.
"Just as well killing the bastards isn't our job," Cannis muttered, though it was only a half truth, he did not expect to take the position, but he would have to kill a fair few of the traitors if they were to have any chance of success.

In muted whispers Cannis relayed his orders to the squad, the sheriff's commands passed on by whispers along the line. At his word all eight dropped to lie flat on their bellies and worm their way forwards into as much cover as they could manage while still having shots at men in the trenches, spacing themselves apart.

Pressing his com bead millimetres from his lips Cannis spoke on all channels, to all of the sergeants and to Blake, though the Commissar was mere feet away and scarcely needed it.
"Law men in position. Will cause diversion, request Shadows and Dogs enter settlement after three minutes and catch trenches in cross fire." The sergeant followed his request with a description of the forces in front of them before adding
"Will open fire once all squads in position, please confirm when ready."

Placing three battery cartridges on the ground next to him Cannis sighted a bearded man who might have been in command from the silver icon on his arm, though the piece could just as well have been blasphemous decoration, and waited.

Cannis will order his squad into a long line just on the tree line in as much cover as they can find. When (and if) the other squads confirm that they are in position Cannis will open fire, concentrating fire on any one looking like they want to try and operate the mortar primarily but otherwise just bathing the trench with semi automatic fire and trying to make it seem like there are more than just the eight of them (nine with Blake, but I cannot speak for him obviously).

He assumes that this will bring more (hopefully all) of the traitors in the settlement to the trenches and so asks that the other squads hold off for three minutes before entering the settlement and taking them from behind (if you are chuckling you have a filthy mind :) ).

Frost led his squad through the trees to the south without a response from the Commissar or any objections, knowing that if Cannis was going to cause the distraction from the north and the others the brunt of the attack, it could be worth having his boys further down. If the enemy tried to encircle the force by the trees they could spring a counter ambush and hopefully stall the traitors in mid charge. If the enemy tried to push towards the northern attack, his squad would be able to attack from directly behind them, together the three teams could pin the enemy against the river and destroy them. It was also the way of the traitor guard to lead from the back more times than not, so if they did approach from behind Hawk might get a good shot at any enemy command. Getting his boys into crouched positions near the edge of the treeline, he began to take in the scene that was laid out before them.

From here it looked as though there were some ten enemy soldiers emplaced on either side of the makeshift river crossing, most of which carried old equipment and were apparently without command. There were a couple of sentries in the small settlement across the river too, he spied some gun emplacements on the roofs and a couple of sentries sitting by an old oil drum. He hoped they had enough men between them to get across the river and into the settlement, but with twenty soldiers in the way and more beyond he doubted they could do so without losing number. He turned around to address his squad, just as he heard the voice of Cannis crackle over the comm-link and let them know he was in place.

"Hawk, see if you can get a shot on that gun emplacement on the roof. Once the distraction starts we'll probably be sitting idle for a few minutes as to give us the advantage of suprise. No point wasting that time, if you can shoot them do so. The rest of you keep low and get ready to advance on my command."

He pressed his hand to his helmet to activate the comm-link.

~"This is Frost. In position, just south of the enemy. Will advance two minutes after the gunfight begins. Over."~

Hmm. Priority targets are: Mortar, Heavy Las, Barracks, possibly bridge. He stroked his chin as his men, calculating the best way to go about this now that he was in his element. At least 12 men in the settlement alone, almost certainly more, if the brief reports being sent from squad to squad are anything to go on. He grinned. The Devil-Dogs were specialists at assaulting fixed positions, and he felt alive again as he considered how best to storm the area.

As his men formed a ragged line near the edge of the forest, and settled into good positions offering cover and concealment crouching and laying in the thick under-growth. He sent some basic hand signals to Carlson and Jackson indicating they should stick close to Bragg and cover him. He gave Brooklyn and Crazyhorse a nod, knowing they would be the main momentum behind the assault. Snake-eater, White Rice and Lizz automatically found positions to either side of the two men and sergeant. Bragg hunkered down behind a tree with another felled in front of it, slightly behind the rest of the men, with Carlson and Jackson.

Brenners hand went to his comlink, activating it briefly.

*|Confirm. Three minutes. Shells will be coming in hot then, be aware.|*

Brenner took his hand from his comlink, checked his comlink, and glanced to the north, waiting for Cannis to make his move.

Brenner gets his men situated in hidden positions as best he can, that they can still move quickly from, and waits for the distraction in the north to start.

Cannis waited for a few moments, before it became clear that they were all truly ready. The sergeant raised his Lasgun, as did the others of his squad, Blake drew his Laspistol, and bracing it on his other arm waited. Cannis fired the first burst, and the shots of red energy shot out, to patter against the raised hump of the trench. The rest of his squad opened fire shortly after, all on full burst, sending a mighty shower of energy at the trench. One of the traitors was hit in the top of the head by one such shot, and his old badly maintained helmet was torn asunder, and his brains flew out. The rest ducked down as the fire continued, as Cannis squad kept up a continues stream of lasfire.

Soon the enemy were retaliating, some firing blindly from behind their fortification, sending solid slug rounds, and a few blue bolts of lasfire energy back, that slammed harmlessly into the trees, causing leaves to fall. Cannis' squad still had the advantage, and for the moment had the enemy pinned.

Hawk heard the fire from the north, and sighted down his scope, aiming for the weapon emplacement just like the sergeant had said. He took a long breath and fired, feeling the reassuring kick of his gun. He saw the hotshot round, take the head clean off the gunner who was trying to look after the weapon. Before the other one could truly grasp what had happened, Hawk sent another round, and this took the fellow clean through the neck. Blood gushed out, and he slumped dead over the gun. He took his eye away from the scope to reload, seeing that the men in the barracks were heading north through the settlement towards Cannis' assault, though the sentries remained, looking around alert now weapons held tightly.

Both Brenner and Schofield saw the traitors running north to where the fire fight still raged on. They couldn't count how many, but it was clear that the sentries would stay. Both sergeants counted down the seconds till they had to move, eager to be at it. They were all in position all they had to do was wait.

The first mortar shell fell ten yards short of the tree line, kicking up mud and grass, momentarily blocking Cannis and his mens view of the enemy. They kept up the fire, 3 of the squad reloading as the rest fired, and rotating it so a constant hail was on the enemy. Reinforcements on the way give them hell in the name of the Emperor, Blake barked to the men and over the vox, as he stepped from behind the tree to fire off his pistol. He had to duck back quickly as more solid slugs and las rounds came at them. Cannis and his men were having to duck back into cover more and more, as the enemy fire intensified. The fire fight was swinging in their favour as more and more of them joined the fight. Another mortar shell came down, engulfing the top of one of the trees they were under in a explosion, sending flame splinters everywhere. They were truly in the shiz now.

Time was up though, and the other three squads needed to be on the move.

Hawk took a long deep breath, his eyes closed and his muscles relaxed. He exhaled quietly below the scope of his rifle, then tensed his shoulder and took another short breath, opening his right eye and looking through his sight to the enemy gun emplacement on the roof. It seemed the power core of the heavy gun had either failed or needed recharging, one of the gunners was holding down the release catches while the other pulled the heavy power cell from the gun. He breathed out once again, his keen ears listening out for any sign of gunfire in the north. The first gunner was helping the second carry the delicate power core over to a barrel to examine it now, their attentions focused soley on the gun beside them. Stupid, especially for a sentry gunner. Why is one not keeping the lookout?

Then he heard it, the faint pop crackle of echoing gunfire nearby. He flexed his fingers and took another deep breath, leaning in closer to his scope and positioning the hairline cross at its centre over the gunner who was now standing over the broken power core of the heavy lasgun. He almost took pleasure in the simplicity of the shot, exhaling one more time to gather himself and tightening his trigger finger. Two more seconds passed, then Hawk took and held a short breath, tensed his finger yet further, and looked for the shot. The gunman was moving slightly, talking and waving his arms about as he became aggrivated with his partner, and the wind was picking up from north to west. He had to wait. Then he saw his chance, the gunman putting his hands to his sides and looking down, the wind slowing. He squeezed the trigger and watched as the sentries head exploded out the back of his helmet. There was no time to take joy in the kill, his hands working quickly to prep the rifle for another shot. The second gunner was dead before he could even shout a warning.

"Heavy lasgun emplacement on the roof near the bridge. Target neutralised."

***

"Affirmative," said Frost, repeating the statement into the vox-link to Blake, "Heavy lasgun on the roof has been neutralised. Over."

He could hear the stream of gunfire to the north increasing, it seemed like it was getting closer for a moment but he knew that was just the enemies closer to him returning fire northward. Sure enough, the shots then seemed to quieten down again slightly as the enemy began to counter charge Cannis and his squad. Two minutes of waiting passed, and then Frost knew that Brenner and Schofield should be charging the enemy from the treeline at their side, no doubt taking them by suprise. The manoevere would pin the enemy against the river, with nowhere to run but back to their trenches behind them. That was where he and his squad came in. They were to move up from the south and complete the closing of the net, surrounding the enemies and wasting no time in killing them.

He looked down at the timer he had set on the back of his rifle.

00.01.53

"Less than two minutes til we close the snare. Brenner and Schofield should be attacking now. Check guns and get ready to move."

"Yes Sarge" grunted Bear beside him, reloading his unfired rifle just for good measure.

Fox nodded his assent, crawling forwards a few feet and watching the river from within the bushes at the forests edge. "All clear here, we should have a clear run up to the trenches."

Snake lifted his gun up and down in mock celebration, "Let's shoot some heads, blow out some traitor skulls!

Frost couldn't help but smile at his trigger happy friend, "Easy there Snake, remember to aim this time..."

00.01.32

"90 Seconds. Shut up and wait for my command."

The quiet talking stopped.

"Right, men! The Emperor expects! On them!" Brenner roared, exploding from the treeline. He sighted down his barrel towards the guards he saw on the nearest roof. He sprayed a burst across the length of the roof, causing the men to duck down, although it looked like one might have got clipped by the way he fell sideways.

As the squad opened up around him, the men on the roof sent shots their way, taking out chunks of dirt from the area around them as the squad closed on the edge of the settlement at a full sprint, zig-zagging and occasionally dropping and rolling before popping back up.

He heard Bragg drop, yelling "EASE!" to protect his ears. The squad followed suit, the response drilled endlessly into them. He heard the roar of the launcher, the scream of the missle, and then the crump-WOOSH! that meant something was dieing. A bloody grin crossed his face. He looked back, yelling to Bragg and signaling just in case. He hoped the man understood, that the squad would drop, and to fire then. He loosed another volley of shots across the rooftops, and barked "DIRT!". The men immediately dropped to their stomachs, guns still pointed forward, legs straight back, the dangers of assaulting fixed postitions meaning that this was one command they obeyed instantly and without thought, usually to avoid incoming fire. Brenner grinned. Well, they ARE avoiding fire, technically...

*****

Bragg swung his freshly loaded launcher towards the trenches as he dropped to a knee. He spent a split second sighting, confident in his trusted and tested equipment and skills. Aim low, go for the far side trench wall. Back-blast in confined space, centered on the mortar. Go. "EASE!" He triggered the launcher, and with a roar the rocket ignited and screamed towards the emplacement on a trail of fire.

He popped back up, grabbing a fresh shell from Duffels and sliding it home with a satisfying click. He was already running after the squad when he heard the crump-WOOSH! of the rockets detonation.

He smiled grimly. I Fire and forget, they never forget the fire. He heard the Sarge yelling at pointing at the barracks up ahead. He dropped to a knee, steadying himself as he swung the launcher up towards the building. Duffels jumped down next to him, waiting for him to need to reload. As one, the squad dropped. Bragg grinned. Surprise...

*****

The squad will move towards the settlement in a fast, erratic manner. Bragg shoots a rocket at the mortar, hoping to put it into the trench wall in front of it so that the back-blast takes the crew out and possibly the mortar. The squad will fire bursts all across the roofs and at any guards they see. After this, they will drop and Bragg will ready himself to fire again at the Barracks.

OOC: I figure that one rocket per "turn" is probably realistic, does that work?

Cannis smiled grimly as more and more of the enemy trickled out of the settlement and towards his position, his levity disappearing as a mortar shell cracked open a tree trunk not three meters from him. The plan was working, but perhaps a little too well; still neither he nor his squad had suffered any major injuries, yet, and nor had Blake, so he didn’t really have too many complaints.

Their own fire had been equally ineffective, but that was only to be expected, people dug trenches for a reason, they had lasted through Forty Thousand years of warfare as a viable tactic because they worked.

The sheriff fell flat behind the fallen log masquerading as cover as another blind burst came far too close for comfort, even as the fire began to momentarily slacken the Sergeant’s hands began to move in a routine hammered into him every day of basic training and honed every day since.

Two fingers on his right hand flipped the switch in the butt of his rifle to release the cartridge, even as the battery fell to the ground another was rammed home, the lever switched back and the stock on his shoulder once more.

With the rifle reloaded Cannis rose a few inches and sent a stream of crimson energy bolts towards the lip of the trench, and could only hope that one or two of them would catch the soldiers packed tightly within. With the fire storm between them and each side in cover both were firing blind.

"Reinforcements on the way boys! Just a little longer and we can kill these bastards properly!" Cannis shouted encouragement and reassurance to his squad, particularly young Harris who was firing with the best of them, but with a face paler than most.

Cannis and his men (and woman) will continue to do what they have been doing, pouring fire down into the trench and any targets of opportunity such as people arriving from the settlement who are not in a trench.

OOC - I think that my laptop hates me... Now I need to retype the post. First things first... Dauricha, do you think you could put the Post deadline in your mod posts again? I work well with deadlines. Also just in case your about to post I'm puttign this in now and will edit in my post.

here we go...

IC - Schofield tensed at the sound of las fire as it echoed to where he waited. He clenched his grip on his lasgun, looking at his men. In less then three minutes he and his men would be down there in the heat. He glanced at the timer as the seconds tocked away. He had to stop himself as he realised he was counting down it. He was tense and nervous. It was out of character for him and he didn't like it.

Why am I so tense, so up tight about this. It's hardly my first time into combat, it's not as if I've never been wounded in battle before. It's not even my first time leading my men into battle. I have no reason for why I should be so nervous right now. Heck this is practically home ground for my boys, they excel in close quarter fighting. I should be resolute and strong for them. I can't be weak. Not again.

Schofielf took a long breath, loosening the death like hold he had on his weapon. The sounds of the battle were still clear to his men as las fire was exchanged between both sides. Looking at the timer he knew they didn't have long before they had to charge down. "30 seconds until we move" he muttered. Giving them he quick nod they readied their weapons, readying to plunge into the heat of battle. Each one knew what they had to do and he trusted each one of his Shadow's to do the task before him.

In the last seconds before they made their move he went over the last few details with them, speaking quietly and quickly. Alright men, we've been through this all before. I trust each one of with my life. Do me proud. Templar, I want you to use that hatchet of yours like only you know how. Reave me a bloody path from these traitors. Druid, Thanatos; I want you to stick with Templar, watch his back and give him supporting fire where needed. Trickster, Fenrir; you two are with me. Now do me proud and let the Emperor protect.

The Commissar's voice crackled over the comm link as the last few seconds ticked away. Shadow's, move out. Leading his men, he leapt from cover and charged down towards the settlement. His previous anxiety was pushed aside as he moved as fast as he could towards the settlement and the cover it provided. Until they made it down there they were as good as sitting ducks.

*****

Templar waited patiently, whispering prayers of penetance towards for the Emperor. He looked towards his sergeant, he looked a little stressed. It was unlike him, though he still had faith in his sergeant that he would lead them in doing the Emperors' task. His lasgun was secured over his shoulders, he could access it quickly should he need to, but as they would be amongst the enemy quickly he planned to make use of his weapon. Taking his hatchet from it's holder he waited for the orders to move out.

*****

Thanatos treated this like any other mission he'd been in. Holding up his rifle he took a quick look down the siight, ensuring it was all ready. Satiisfied he lowered it and waited for the sign to move.

Will charge down towards the settlement quickly trying to make it to cover. Once there they'll split into two teams and move from there.

Brenner and Schofields squads burst from the tree line they were hiding in. Bragg immediately opened up with his Tank Fether rocket launcher aiming at the buildings. His shot hit one near the top of the wall, bursting it apart in a fiery explosion, killing the two traitors who were on top, and bringing the rest of the building down with it. He couldn't make out the trenches where Cannis and his boys were firing. Alvin “Duffel bag” Carlson put a fresh rocket in for him as him and the rest of the squad made it to the first line of houses. Schofields squad was breaking up into two three man teams. They all waited leaning against the wall.s the first rush of combat rolling through them. The sentries had been taken out in moments, but the enemy now knew they were there.

Cannis. heard another mortar shell blow a tree apart behind him, and he was showered in thick splinters, one leaving a shallow cut across his cheek. Daylight broke through, as the mortar continued to break through the canopy. So far none of his squad had been hurt by it, only receiving a few cuts from flying splinters, but their was only so many times it could hit the trees above them, before one shell fell into their position. The fire fight had swung in the enemies favour, and they could only stand for a few moments at a time to get off a few shots before having to duck down. As far as Cannis could tell, their were at least two score of enemies now in the trench on his side of the river, and more then likely more. A few of the enemy had been picked off as they ran to the trench, but it was nowhere near enough. They heard Schofield and Brenners boys move in from the south of them, as he hoped Frosts boys were doing as well. HE hoped they were on the way.

Frost and his Wild Storm still waited as the sounds of the other three squads now fully engaged came to them. None of the traitors had noticed that the heavy guns crew was dead yet, but they would any moment now. They needed to attack.

OOC: Feline, Im going to allow Bragg to get off one rocket per post. This seems like a good system to start with, and as he gets better of course this will change. Sorry it took me so long to get this up guys.

OOC - Dauricha, in your next mod post can you give a bit more of a description on the town... or the visible landmark like buildings within. That way I can add a bit more direction for how my squad moves throughout it.

IC - He clutched his weapon tightly to his chest, breathing in sharply after the dash to the wall. All his men had made it there safely to the safe cover that the building provided. His Shadows had already split into the group as per his orders, just as he expected them too. Looking at Templar's team he signalled that they should prepare to move quickly. Their task was to clear the nearby buildings, working towards the trenches to flank them.

Moving towards the closest corner of the house he took a quick look around to see of there were any enemies present. Motioning for Trickster and Fenrir to be ready to follow him as he moved towards the next building infront of him. Coutning down from five he readied to make the dash.

*****

Like his Sergeants team, Templar's were ready to follow him as he moved into the town to neutralise the threat. He kept a firm hold of the Hatchet, waiting for the chance to sink it into the enemy. Not wasting time he moved towards in the direction of the enemy trench line, hopping from cover to cover, watching for an enemy to attack.

Okay so the Scarecrows Group are moving more so into the town, using the cover as best the can. Templars Group are heading towards the trenches. Templar has the Hatchet in hand with the other free, the rest are holding their Las Guns and they have their bayonets/battle knives attacked should the encounter an enemy close up.

OOC - Perhaps I missed something, but I thought we were on one side of the river and the settlement on the other. There was one crossing point, a ford guarded on either side by a trench containing ten men. The other enemies were all in or near the settlement across the river. So if I read it right, how can people already be in the settlement without having crossed the river at the bridge by first killing those in the trenches. Can somebody clarrify?

IC -

Frost looked down at the timer on the back of his rifle and watched the digits receeding quickly as they counted their way down to zero zero zero. As soon as two minutes was up, he gave the command to move out with a brief wave of his hand and rose from the prone position into a low crouch. He jogged forwards, keeping as low as possible and using the undergrowth as cover, until he emerged on the edge of the treeline with his squad not moments behind him. He took in the scene before him with his cold and calculating eyes. The sentry gunners on the roof were indeed dead beside their weapon, Hawks marksmanship once again proving itself invaluable. Further up the river a host of enemy soldiers guarded a crossing point, throwing an endless stream of gunfire at Cannis' position in the trees to the north. Brenner and Schofield were leading their units in a charge directed at the trenches there. Frost was already charging up adjacent to the river with his lads.

Frost will use the river bank as soft cover as he approaches the fighting swiftly but decisively from the south. If the bridge is indeed the only point to cross into the settlement then his aim is to take it as quickly as possible while minimising friendly casualties. He will have Bear and Fox engage any traitors not within the trench while Hawk and Snake pour fire into the ditch. He himself will try to spot any sort of enemy commander, whilst of course shooting any traitor head that presents itself. If there is a closer way across the river, Frost will lead his men half way across and use the river as cover whilst shooting anyone they can see.

OOC: I was under the impression that the crossing was in the settlement, not at the entrenchments, I could be wrong though.

IN: Things were not particularly rosy for Cannis or his squad with enemy fire seemingly growing fiercer by the second. Slamming yet another clip home Cannis rose to fire off a blast, at full auto now with almost no time at all to aim. He didn't know if they were even killing anyone.

Come on you bastards, come on. he thought, willing the other squads closer to put some serious enfilading fire down on that trench. For now they could do nothing but stand fast (or lie fast in this case) and wait.

No change, see last post.

OOC: Sorry this post took a while.
The map made it seem like the trenches were to one side of the settlement, and the settlement was on both sides of the river and surrounded the bridge.

IC: Brenner felt a pinch on his cheek as a shot from above hit a stone in the grass and sent a small chip flying like shrapnel past him. He grinned as his rifle bucked again. Crazyhorse was, as usual, blasting away at any sign of the enemy, no matter how small, while Brooklyn laid down a methodical area coverage that would have warmed an anti-aircraft gunners heart. Between the two of them, they made showing so much as a scalp a rather dangerous prospect for the enemy. He led the men toward the collapsed building, going for the safe passageway Bragg had blown in the curtain of fire.

As they dashed forward to the cover of a slightly crumbled wall, Brenner looked over at Bragg. "Split into fireteams" he signed in standard Guard hand signals. It was too loud to risk shouted orders being misunderstood, and not loud enough to be sure the enemy wouldn't hear. Bragg nodded, and the squad split into two groups.

Brenner will take Crazyhorse, Brooklyn, Lizz, and White Rice. Bragg will take Carlson, Jackson, and Snake-eater.

OOC: Ok so here the map with some rings to show where your squads are located. Also note the forests where Cannis and his squad are should be more out, facing the trenches a little bit more, sorry that is isn't shown.

Image

Red= Cannis' squad with Commisar Cadet Blake
Green= Brenner and his squad, now splitting up and going further into the settlement.
Yellow= Scarecrow and squad. They are in the settlement and are now splitting up.
Blue= Frost and his squad. coming in from the south of the settlement.

Ok I hope that makes it more clear. The settlement sis on both sides of the river. One bridge stands at its centre and is the only way to the other bank. Hope that makes its clearer. Sorry if you guys are getting confused. Im back now and throwing myself fully into this. As always your suggestions and ideas are welcome, any questions just post.

IC: Cannis and his squad kept the fire up as best they could, although they now all sported minor wounds and burns. Commissar Cadet Blake had lost his cap to one lucky slug, but he didn't seem to notice it as he stood bellow prayers and liturgics's of the Emperor as he fired, burning through clips for his pistol quickly. Cannis then realised that the mortar had stopped, for the moment. Lasfire still sounded out, and the burning of foliage could now be heard. What did it mean? He was shown soon enough, as fifteen of the traitorous guard burst out of the trench and rushed forward, wielding clubs, and bayoneted rifles. They were charging, madness in their eyes.

Frost and his squad moved up towards the south of the settlement. No enemy could be seen, they either lay dead from their las fire, or had headed north to the trenches where the fighting was still thick. They passed the building they took to be a barracks, now empty. Like most of the structures of the settlement, it was one story, made of the same concrete painted a light cream colour as all the buildings in this village were. They had flat roofs, and small square windows with this dark wooden doors. War marked them all whether it be the burnt remains of a door, the blasted out roof, a caved in wall or blood smeared on the walls, all showed the signs of destruction and death. They moved through the buildings silent, and though they could hear the enemy they had not seen any.

Frost and his squad moved through the back entrance of what once would have been a butchers, and moved to the front where they saw the small town square, through the shot out window. Keeping hidden they could see the bridge. Traitorous guard could be seen running north, but at least a dozen of them stayed by the stone bridge that crossed the water, keep behind thick sandbags. They heard a rumble and saw a lightly armored truck roll over the bridge. A autocannon sat jerry rigged on its back and eight enemies in their dirty armour could be seen milling around the back. Operating the gun was a traitor whos armour was of better quality, and who also had a old battered chainsword at his side. A small vox antenna could be seen poking out of a bag on his back. Clearly this was an officer or at least a warrior of note.

Brenner, Crazyhorse, Brooklyn and Lizz moved heading north, whilst the rest of his squad headed further into the settlement. Bragg and his part of the squad, made it to the town square, where Frost and his men were hiding. They took up refuge in another burnt out store, as they looked at the traitors who were guarding the bridge. Hey boys, whispered Scarecrow, causing Brag and the others to jump. Scarecrow and the others filled into the burnt out shop as they studied the enemy. They stayed silent waiting for the Sergeant to decided their next move.

Templar, buried his hatchet in the back of a traitors skull, they well maintained steel easily cutting through the heretics old helmet. Druid and Thanatos took their own blades out of their fallen enemies. The three of them had come up on the three enemies who were hiding in a building near the northern edge of the village. Their kills weren't as clean or quick as Templar's but three enemy lay dead at their feet. They crept to the window the three enemy had been looking out. They were on the very edge of the northern settlement, and could see the back of the trenches clearly now. They also saw that more then a third of the heretics were out of the trench now running at the trees, leaving five on the trench on this side of the river, who kept on firing, as they stood amongst their dead comrades. They could also see that a few of the traitors from the other side of the river were making it across on a rickety wooden bridge, if all be it slowly.

OOC: Ok I hope that is clear guys, glad to be back. Go at it!

Frost threw himself against the inside wall of the building, his lasgun held tight against his chest as he looked first left and then right. He nodded his head, a sign almost lost in the darkness of the old butchers store, but one his squad saw none the less. All four of his men quickly joined him, forming up two to either side of the blown out window he was now looking out of. He watched as a host of enemy traitors took leave of the trenches and charged towards the north, no doubt meaning to assault Cannis. He decided against wasting his time voxing a warning to the other Sergeant, knowing that he would already be able to see them coming his way. Instead he let his focus return to the bridge, where a dozen or so men still waited in the nearby trench. They could wait though. An armoured truck was carrying another ten or so infantry across the bridge, towards the nearby firefight slightly to the north. Atop the back of the truck, manning the autocannon, was a man with the look of an officer about him. Frost was already calling a vox warning.

~ "This is Frost. Enemy APC crossing bridge with High Rank onboard. I will terminate. Keep those in the trenches busy. Over." ~

He turned to his squad, trying to quickly decide on the best action for each of his lads to undertake in the given situation. Fortunately for him four hard years of training and fighting together had taught him everything he needed to know about his squad, which was also the reason why he had declined the offer of four new recruits joining him just before this mission. What use were four extra guns if you didn't know the men behind them. If another Sergeant was commanding them they would almost certainly be of use, but if they looked to you for support and command they would be little other than a burden. And war was no place to allow such burdens to slow you down. Only seconds had passed when he began giving his commands.

"Hawk, take care of the officer on the APC, if he won't comply we'll finish him off up close. Snake and Bear, prepare to throw fire into the squad on the truck as soon as Hawks bullet leaves his rifle. No doubt return fire will come in thick and fast, so use the window as cover and keep the pressure up. Fox, you're with me. There must be a doorway to outside nearby where we can stay with the shadows and provide covering fire from an unexpected angle."

As stated, Frost will give his orders and then take Fox and look for a way outside. If he finds one, he will go prone in the shadows and watch the enemy for a reaction. If covering fire is needed, he will supply it. If a counter charge is unleashed, he and Fox will counter-counter charge that counter charge!

The jagged cracks of sluggers, mellow coughs of auto guns and the low whine of sheeting las fire melded into one chaotic symphony, underpinned by the crackle of small fires in the undergrowth. It took Cannis a little while to realise that the bark of the mortar, followed soon after by its deafening crash, had ceased. He soon saw why as fifteen large and dirty cultists on the far side of sanity clambered up and over and began to head towards the tree line, presumably in order to flush his squad out.

Cursing himself for not ordering bayonets fixed beforehand Cannis began shouting
"Corporal, take teams B and D back a little way into the woods, fix bayonets and prepare to counter charge when our guests arrive!"
Those that are still alive, few enough if I have my way.
"Commissar, will you join the combat teams sir?" the boy's chainsword would be a great asset in any hand to hand fight them found themselves in, he could only hope that Blake would follow his advice.

As Farnes began to wriggle back through the undergrowth accompanied by Harris, Jones and Bess Cannis and the rest of the squadies left at the tree line set to thinning out the traitors ranks a little. Thus far they had not done much damage but with a little luck and a steady aim that was about to change.

"I want to see screaming cultists with holes where their hearts used to be boys, FIRE!"

Cannis will send Farnes with three others slightly back into the forest where they can safely stand and fix bayonets with orders to counter charge any traitors who make it to the tree line. If there is time they will return to the tree line before then to add their fire power back in, if not they will wait. Cannis suggests that Blake goes with them as his weapons are more suited to close combat than range. Cannis and the other three at the tree line will target the incoming enemies firing targeted bursts of three or four shots each time.

OOC: I'm assuming North is "up" on the map?

IC:
Brenner ducked as a solid shot whizzed past, slamming into a wall and taking out a chunk before shattering, but the enemy fire seemed to be lessening slightly as they moved North towards the enemy trenches. Brooklyn popped up slightly and sent several well placed shots, the red spurts of energy crackling as they flew through the air over the solid waist high fence he was crouched behind and towards several guards running towards the town square. He ducked back into cover before he could see what had happened to the rebels. The fire-team broke from cover, flowing between dilapidated walls and abandoned machinery, rubble and and old monuments, until finally they reached the next piece of cover, a solid looking machine that seemed like it was designed to filter and store water, and looked to be made from solid brass. As they found positions behind the machine were they could cover the various approaches while remaining in cover, Brenner's comm-bead chimed and a voice hissed into his ear. He listened with growing concern as the details of Frost's report came in. He swore under his breath vehemently. An APC, this changes things. Throne knows how many more of those they have, and what else is waiting for us if they've got armour. And Frost wants to take it on with a nothing but a sniper rifle and balls? Would have to be one hell of a light APC, and some damned big balls. +Frost, this is...+ He hesitated. There was no way to be sure an enemy with a vox set wasn't around to pick up the signals, names of officers, even just sergeants, were a bad idea here. But if he used a code for Frost then the enemy would permanently have both. He swore again. Maybe they'll think Frost is a code. +Frost, this is Devil Dog 1, repeat, this is Alpha Dog, if possible contact my team near you, tread-feth support can engage APC.+ The fire-team started towards the trenches again, it was high time someone closed the trap that Cannis and his men had baited.

**********

Bragg swore as the sergeant tapped him on the shoulder. He spun, letting the launcher begin an arc that would pulverize bones and crush skulls. His arms strained and his eyes bulged as he checked the swing, his prodigious strength arresting the momentum of the heavy launcher even as it started. "I'll thank you not to sneak up on my in the future if it's at all avoidable." He growled. He turned back to look out the windows, and a grin crept across his face as he heard sergeant Frost pointing out, and then saw, the enemy APC. His eyes lit up as he saw the half-track. It doesn't have roll bars, an open crew compartment, it's just BEGGING for a rocket under the front bumper. He was pretty sure Brenner would want him to take the vehicle. Or maybe he'd want him to save his rockets in case something nastier came up. He thought it through. Well, maybe better to wait for orders from someone before firing He decided. As he was deliberating, Carlson, A.K.A. "Duffels" glanced over at sergeant "Scarecrow". "Sorry about that, sir, he's just a naturally cautious person. I'm sure he didn't mean it as a threat or to be rude, sometimes his mouth just gets the better of him. He has a little temper problem, see, and, he's working on it, and getting better, and...." He trailed off. "Sorry sir." He finished meekly.

OOC: 3 things. First off yes north is up, sorry later mpas will have more detail. Second, Ive waited for Sid but now decided to press on. Third, I will be brining back the deadline system from now on.

IC: Hawk had his scope pointed at the armoured vehicle in moments. However the officer was nowhere to be seen, and now just a regular trooper operated the gun, scanning the towns square looking for foes. The traitors that had disembark from the transport had taken up shelter around the sandbags, with the others. Frost had gone through the battered doorway of the shop, and crept behind some crates, reasonably hidden in the shadows. the officer was nowhere to be seen.

All the squads heard Brenners call, and it was clear that a sizeable amount of their forces were now near the square. Their comrades were still engage in the north by the trees however, though Cannis' quick plan was effective. He and three others stuck close to the tree line, taking pot shots at the charging enemy, taking down three in the time it took them to reach the tree line. He heard the most furious of metallic roars behind him, as the traitors burst through the trees. Blake had joined the others, who came charging back with Farnes, Harris, Jones and Bess, all screaming their own warcrys.

The others traitors had made it across the river, and now eight of them were in the trench that Templar, Druid and Thanatos look upon. They all heard the roar of a chainsword from the trees and some of the cultist looked back their way nervously, as the Storm Hounds watched on.

Cannis squads counter charged work. Commissar Cadet Blake went at the scream, and brought his screaming metal tooth blade down, cutting into one of the cultists shoulders, the savage blade biting deeper and deeper, sending blood everywhere. The rest of the traitors stood in shock for a moment, and three more were gutted, by bayonets before they could do anything. Then the fight was on. Cannis and those who stayed by the treeline, were unable to draw their blades in time, and the sergeant had to jump back from a swing of a spiked club that would have taken his face off. His opponent was skilled enough, but Cannis was sure he oculd take him.

Cannis smiled grimly as he finally saw his crimson bolts punch through flimsy armour and boil black blood. Some fell, but not enough, it would be hard fighting. As the traitors reached the tree line Cannis rolled to the side to avoid having his skull split, the misbegotten traitor seemed to grin at him, for all that he was missing several yellowed teeth
I will wipe the smile off your face!

There was no time to draw a blade, certainly no time to affix it to his rifle. Taking the heavy weapon in a solid grip Cannis surged to his feet and swung high, using his gun like a club, but in truth the blow was but a diversion and as he did so he kicked out with a booted foot, seeking that most tender of targets.
___________________________________________________________________

Farnes laughed as he pounded through the forest, heavy boots cracking fallen branches. This was how a war should be fought, with blade and bayonet, and tooth and nail should both fail. The horrific and graphic evisceration of a comrade by the young commissar put the windup them right enough, and the corporal chose a large and heavily muscled man with tattoos scattered like spider webs down his pockmarked face. Slamming his bayonet home with all the force of his momentum and the strength of his shoulders the moustached man sundered the ill armoured traitor's heart.

As his first victim crashed to the forest floor Farnes was already looking for another,
"That's the spirit lads, keep at'em! They can't abide the cold steel the miserable dogs! Keep at'em! Form on the Commissar!"
___________________________________________________________________

Those men who had been manning the tree line got to their feet, seeking enemies but sticking always to their partner, for it would not do to become isolated in this maelstrom of death and confusion. They had drawn first blood but the advantage of surprise was certainly gone.

Whatever they thought of Blake as a leader or a man his blade was a beacon and one that the traitors obviously feared, rallying around him they could beat off this attack, and turn their attention back to the greater battle.

Cannis will engage his attacker, swinging with his rifle for his head and trying to kick him in the balls. The others at the tree line will also stand and defend themselves, staying in their pairs as best they can. If unengaged all squad members will rally to Blake and then charge the enemy, attempting to rescue anyone in trouble as a priority. No one will leave the forest for any reason.

Frost cursed as Hawk voxed over his concerns, having lost sight of the officer on the APC almost as soon as he had spotted him. Had the officer suspected that he be lined up down the sights of a rifle, or did he just happen to depart at what seemed like the right moment? No doubt he was now moving towards the trench on the far side of the APC and would be bolstering the troops there. Then again, it seemed the other squads were starting to engage those and draw them out anyway. His vox had crackled a few seconds before with a static ridden message from Brenner and he took this brief moment of stillness amongst the chaos to reply.

~"Enemy officer lost from sight, possible vox tap on this conversation. I leave the APC to you, all we wanted were the heads of those onboard."~

He paused, considering the best thing to say if the enemy did indeed have a bead on his vox channel. Lowering his voice, he tried on a quick lie that would hopefully confuse the traitors.

~"Reinforcements are enroute as planned and will hit the traitors from the East in T approximately 4 minutes."~

Knowing the other squads would easily be able to identify him by his vox reference he knew they would realise in a short amount of time he was covering their link and not actually speaking the truth, if indeed they didnt pick up on the fact simply because the message didnt come from Blake. It probably wouldnt work anyway, even if the enemy was listening into their vox his earlier message to Brenner could have been enough to shut them off. He cursed and cast such thoughts from his mind, gripping his rifle tight and turning back to the task at hand. The enemy APC was still covered in enemy troops and his men were still in the prime position to do something about it. Hopefully the devil dogs could nuke the APC itself, but they would have to be careful not to destroy the bridge in the process. He decided the best way he could help was to draw the APC off the bridge and down towards his position in the South. That way the truck would present its side or rear armour to Brenner and his tank-fether.

~"Hawk, take out gunner at once. Snake, Bear, lay down fire as advised. Draw that truck our way but do not engage"~

He turned to Fox who was laying prone beside him in the shadows,

"Keep an eye out for that Officer, but stick to the plan. If the enemy turns our way and engages the others we counter-charge from the side. Stay out of the way of the truck though, I suspect it will be blown sky high soon enough."

Watching and waiting, not yet willing to give up his position. Hawk, Bear and Snake are to open fire on the APC crew however.

OOC - sorry this has taken so long, things should be back to normal though until I come up to exams.

IC - Templar watched the traitors cross to the trench, grasping his hatchet, the blood still dripping off the blade, fresh after he'd brought it down into the scum's underserving skull. He wanted to charge out into them and take their lives from them. The punishment for heresy was death and as far he cared they deserved no better. The Emperor had protected them all and they had taken up his service to protect his work only to then forsake it and defile with these slanders of chaos.

Looking at Druid and Thanatos beside him in the shados of the building he nodded towards the trench infront of them. Whispering he spoke, trying to keep his husky voice down as to not alert the enmies of them.

"Our options are simple. Wait for support, wait for a distraction or sneak into the trenches and catch them off guard, hoping we can overpower them despite our smaller numbers."

Thanatos edged towards the window to look onto the trench and the ground between them and it. He'd fought in plenty of skirmishes like this during his service towards the Imperial Guard. Giving a soft grunt he looked back at the other two.

"We'd be best off with numbers to support us but given the trouble caused by Cannis and his lot I think we'd be able to sneak up on them and get them. We move towards the trench, keeping low we split up so that me and Druid are at either end with our lasguns primed. We jump in on the count of three and catch them in the crossfire, trying not to hit each other. After a count of 5 we'll stop and Templar then you will jump among them with your hatchet while we move in to assist. We rely on surprise the catch them off guard."

Druid, listening intently to the plan from Thanatos. He trusted the older soldier but disagreed with them splitting up for the attack. Three of us, Eight of them. More likely we die if we go in as individuals. They have us outgunned and if they ctach us off guard we can consider ourselves buying a farm back home. Got to be a better way to do it.

Shaking his head he moved closer to the others to speak, "While I like your idea I think it's too dangerous for just 3 of us to attempt. I say we sneak up together. If we make it to the rear of the trench without being spotted we move towards the closest group of them. Open up with las guns and then jump in, Templar first with his combat weapon to finish them off quickly. We go in after and provide covering fire as needed. That way we stick together and we have the best chance of success to take them."

Thanatos grunted at him. "Whatever. We'll go with your plan then. But it's on your head Druid."

Templar has been cleaning the blood off of his blade on the clothes of the traitors while the other two squabbled over plans. Let them decide he thought to himself. He was concerned with living and fighting. So long as they didn't get him killed while he went about that he was happy. Not wanting to further the debate he nodded. "Plans a plan."

Just then they heard the rip of a chain sword and the screams of it's target. Looking at each other they moved out, knowing this was the distraction they needed to make their move with Druid's plan chosen. Making sure it was clear they made to the trneches, hoping all would work.

Will follow the plan outlined by Druid, hopefully it's clear enough.

OOC - the other three will be up tomorrow morning (my time) which whould still be in time for a mod. if I miss it their oing to move up and closer to the bridge across the river near the trenches.

IC: The fight in the forest had turned brutal, and bloody. Blakes first foe had died quickly, but his chainsword had got stuck in the mans ruined ribcage, and he barely brought it up in tome to block the swing of a nail studded club. Cannis flipped his rifle around, holding it like a club, and swung at his attacker. His blow was strong, knocking away the weak block, and the butt of his las gun, smashed into the man jaw, dislocating it,and sending bloody teeth flying. He fell to the ground, and the sergeant was on him, battering him to death with his improvised club. He looked up, his face spattered with blood. His squad had stuck in pairs to face the traitors.

Winsor took a bayonet to the leg howling in pain as he fell back letting go of his lasgun, but Skrag was fighting besides him, and plunged his own fine steel into the filthy heretics neck, as he fell forwards with Winsor, killign him instantly. All the squad had taken cuts and brusies, and even a few minor fractures, but the traitorous guardsmen had had the worst of it, eight of them lay dead under the trees. Four remained. Cannis squad fell in besides Commisar Cadet Blake and they rushed the last four. They fled, tow of them leaving their weapons behind, in their mad dash to escape the fury of the Storm Hounds.

Templar saw the four heretics running from the mortar battered treeline. the eight men in the trench looked even more fearful. He Druid and Thanatos crept from the building, and crept towards the trench. The four fleeing heretics were cut down by las fire before they had made it half way to the trench. Silence fell over the northern trench, as both sides waited to see who would take up the fight again. It was the three fighters of Scarecrows squad. They leapt up and sprayed the trench with lasfire, each emptying a clip into the scum who hid their, taking out three, their bodies riddled with burnt holes. Templar slung his, lasgun, and drew his hatchet in one smooth motion, jumping into the trench shortly followed by the others. They leapt on the startled foe, Templar taking one with a quickly blow to the neck, Thanatos and Druid, another, driving their bayonets in to the mans belly, he screamed like a stuck pig. The remaining three traitorous guard reacted. It was to tight for the use of any gun, so they drew weapons, rusted long knives and clubs, spitting foul curses that hurt their ears.

Up close Templar could see how Chaos was sinking into them. Their eyes had an unnatural madness to them, and they looked worn an thin, but still deadly strong. The first one who came at him, a dagger in each had, had weird ritualistic burns on his cheeks. He spat a curse in a alien tongue as he lunge at the guardsman.

Hawk fired, his hot-shot round, taking the gunners head off. The rest of the crew to the APC, and the men hiding behind the sandbags, ducked instinctively, but not before Bear and Snake got two of them in a flurry of lasfire. They recovered quickly, the men behind the sandbags firing blind in the direction of Frosts squads fire, the few in the APC stayed quiet, though Frost could see one of the was reaching his hands up, so he could fire the gun blind, and not expose himself to the sniper. Bear and Snake had ducked down before they could be hit, but some serious fire was now being thrown at the butchers shop, bits of rubble and wood flying from the impacts, as the front was chewed up by it.

Bragg with the other half of Brenners squad, and the rest of Scarecrows squad, saw the lasfire coming from the other side of the square. Frost had clearly decided to start the fight, and they knew he owuld be dead soon if they didn't get involved
themselves.

Brenner had made his way through the town with his men, and saw Templar engage the trenched foes. He had made it to a house by the river, that lay near the trench. To his left he could see half of Scarcrows fighting in the trench, and it looked like they could use a hand. He could also see however, that only the mortar team remained in the trench on the other side of the river. If they could get across quickly and take it out, it would make the rest of the mission a lot easier.

As the last four ex PDF fighters were gunned down Cannis began redeploying, this was no time for resting on laurels.
"Winsor you girly squealer pick your gun up." he began in his usual, heart warming, manner
"Anyone without a bayonet fixed, fix it." The sergeant followed his own orders even as he gave them and turned to survey the scene.

Over at the trenches it seemed that the cavalry had finally arrived, and none too soon, but the mortar crew in the far trench were still unengaged and could still be a problem. On the other hand Cannis was not simply going to sit around in a wood while everyone else did all the fighting, especially with sounds of gunfire from within the settlement.

The half heard radio chatter indicated that Frost thought there might be a tap on their coms, and since Cannis didn't know either way he thought it best to play it safe and give as few details as possible over them.
++"Sheriff, will advance on trenches. Request trench two neutralised ASAP"++ it still gave away plenty if they were being listened in on, but Cannis didn't see a choice.

To the squad he gave more details,
"Teams A and D, we dash down the hill fifty yards then drop. B and C give cover from the tree line. When A and D drop we will give you cover to join us, then we leap frog like that all the way to the trenches. Winsor, if you can't hack the pace stay put and give cover, if you can then stay with us. I want all of us in those trenches alive, they don't get the satisfaction of killing good men today."

Everyone will fix bayonets (if they have not already done so. Farnes and Harris (now referred to as B) + Winsor and Skrag (C) will take up their positions at the tree line again and provide cover for Cannis and Matiel (A) + Bess and Jones (D) as they dash down towards the trenches as fast as they can, hitting the ground at fifty yards and giving cover for B+C to do the same. They will do this as many times as is allowed, taking it in turns to run.
Moding a group of Druchii.net players is much like directing the musical 'Cats' using actual cats. Frustrating, difficult, chaotic but ultimatley satisfying and a great deal of fun.

Seeing that his squad had successfully earned the attention of the APC crew and gunner without actually drawing the truck their way, Frost let out a quiet snarl of annoyance and voxed his squad once again.

~ "Enemy fire coming in thick and fast. Bear, Snake, keep your heads down but keep firing on that APC crew. Hawk, relocate to my position through the door to your left, from here you should be able to take out whoever gets on the gun each time it changes hands." ~

He now turned to Fox, the stealthiest member of his squad who was well on his way to earning the scout title in Frosts' eyes.

"Think you can get across to the next building without getting shot and draw some of the fire off the butchers shop?"

Fox gave a firm nod, pulling himself into a crouch and raising his lasgun sight to his eye. The pale skinned soldier quickly fixed his bayonette to his rifle and then began his quick but silent move to the North, hugging the shadows as he made to reach the next nearest building and draw some of the APC teams fire from the rest of the lads position.

Not being one for sitting back idle, Frost had a new idea for himself as well.

~ "Brenner, where the frag is that tank fether! Am attempting to draw the truck off the bridge, engage as soon as you have los!" ~

Hawk is to relocate to outside the back door of the butchers shop and take out any gunners on the truck he can see, or anyone else if none presents themself.

Bear and Snake are to continue firing blindly at the bridge, wary of friendlies now entering the trench area and hopefully not getting shot themselves either.

Fox is to scout up into the next nearest building closest to the bridge and try to draw some of the APC teams fire off the butchers shop, also without getting killed.

Frost himself will quickly head North, following Fox but not actually entering the building. Using the corner of the building for cover, Frost will create a fourth point of contact for the APC team and hopefully this will split their fire so much so that it becomes relatively ineffective against any one of his squads four positions. This should take the pressure off Bear and Snake so that they can once again look over the window edge and fire aimed shots at the trucks crew rather than firing blindly into the night.

The overall aim is still to decrew the APC as much as possible whilst in the process of drawing it off the bridge so that it presents flank/rear armour to Brenners tank fether.
