Undercoating is it worth it?
Greetings all
Do you all think that undercoating is really a neccasary step in the painting process?
i personally dont do it and i know of many other people who also don't undercoat. the only reason why i do fully prime my figures is when over eightypercent of the figure itself is black
just thought i would get your opions on it

Primer is definately worth it...
In the beginning I thought of it as superflmuous too, but after 5 figs that cost blood, sweat & tears (and if I look at it now, an awful paint job) and where the paint chipped off at the first enemy encounter, I took to priming...
It takes about a minute for 20 guys, let dry for an hour (meanwhile you can continue painting something else... and you're go

If you must choose between two evils,
pick the one you've never tried before

Undercoating Works
Hey,
I'm about the last guy you want painting advice from since I can't paint well enough to save my life. However, you must undercoat/prime your guys. It's easy, it's quick, it's inexpensive. Just buy a can of spray for 6.49 retail (its less on http://www.thewarstore.net), and you have enough spray for a gazillion guys. I wait about 10-20 minutes for them to dry but for best results let them sit for an hour or so. In the meantime, as somebody else mentioned, you can be painting other guys. OR, if you don't have/want to paint other guys you can be assembling stuff. Or, reading White Dwarf, posting on these boards, visiting http://snakeeyes.nu, playing a computer game, doing homework, talking to a pal, taking a nap, or even using the bathroom. Point is, you can manage your time so that in 1 hour of effort you have many guys assembled or primed plus have a lot of other stuff done. Its really worth the minimal amount of effort expended and using a spray makes it far easier than thinned paint.
Try it!

You don't prime a model to get a variation in shade, although I will admit that priming a model with a dark color (i.e. black) normally results in a darker shade. But, the reason to prime a model is to provide a superior surface for the paints to adhere to. The paints adhere better, you don't need as much of them, they look better, we're talking a nicer luster. Its worth it and takes so little time.

As I've said in my other posts you always need to prime your models. I feel I need to correct Mordkar though. A can of GW white spray does not cost 95 cents. If you get it on TheWarstore.net (where it will cost 20% below retail) it is 6 dollars and some change per can. That's still a good deal as it will last you awhile. At least long enough for a large 2,000 pt army. If not more.

Yes, please do what we have said. Undercoat. Always undercoat black unless the model is going to be light colors. If the model is going to be light colors (like white, yellows, oranges, skin tones) use white. Otherwise use black. I'm sure everybody from the newest newbie to the most veteran 'Eavy Metal painter will tell you this. Or, at least, something similiar.

i always undercoat, the paint sticks much better on the primer then on bare metal.
if i am painting a model that is to be mostly flesh or bright colours then i use white. otherwise black. though i prefer white most of the time.

dungeon_god: I completely agree with you. I can't paint to save my life and undercoating my models makes them look just that much less crappy.
Hopefully, people who read this thread will realize how important undercoating is. Hmm, perhaps yes I think I should write an article on this. Yes, I think I should.

Like most I always undercoat black spray and after painting I apply varnises.
