Slaangor [update, won golden demon on GD France 07]

Post by Georc »

hi all,
inspired by Raffaele Stumpos fantastic Slaangor Unit from golden demon italy

http://it.games-workshop.com/download/p ... gold_6.jpg

I decided to make some Slaangors by my own. I really like Mr. Stumpos idea and will go with much of his idea... some details I will change, for example armour and the shape of the second pair of arms.

Here my WIP, I hope you like it

http://www.dunkelelfen-georc.de/Bilder/ ... ngor01.jpg
http://www.dunkelelfen-georc.de/Bilder/ ... ngor02.jpg

I only need one evening to sculpture this all and I think that I will be able to finish him today... only bit which is missing is a second executuioners draiich... but I will order the missing bitz for the others as soon as possible to continoue work...

Regards GeOrc

Great inspiration, great own execution.

Can't await the paint job.

Wish I had your sculpting skills, GeOrc. :)

Just amazing, I don’t like beastmen but these look terrific.
Your sculpting is very good I wish that I could sculpt like that, is there a way to kill you so that I might get your talent?

On a side note to this, I can remember that you once started a poll about sculpting a special character. The poll showed that Tullaris was the most popular (and the one I voted for to :P ). I was wondering, are you still going to sculpt him (or any other of the special character)?

many thx that you like it, especially cause you arn´t beatman fans ;)

@ Morvai
I haven´t forgot this poll, and I will do this. I allready have the basis miniature for that I only must order some bits and the I will start a topic here to sculpt Tularis. For this I will do it in several steps weekly so that others can follow... This idea was born together with DEArchon form druchii.net who I hardly critisized becasue of one of his conversions. I offered him to do it again, and to do it following me... Others joined and want that too.. so I decided to make this whole thing public.... You will heare from this soon in a own topic... this don´t belongs to this slaangor topic

Best slaangors I have ever seen. The conversion is clean and the weapons are appropriately sized (well not really appropriate, but on the same scale that GW uses).

Do you spend one evening sculpting each slaangor? Sometimes it helps to understand the amount of effort players put into their miniatures.

Have you considered a paint scheme yet, or will they follow the same design as Raffaele Stumpos's?

Those are going to be extremely nice when they're finished. Please keep pictures of the progress coming.

Do you have other models for this army completed yet? I'm very interested in what the color scheme is going to look like when you're done.

And kudos to Raffaele Stumpos. Excellent idea there.

Hiho, new day new progress

@ Ilokir,
no I haven´´t painted yet it sill lays here on my board between a lot of other stuff

@ evilzealot
until now I worked 2 days on the miniature. I think I will need this thrid day to finish him. Becasue I could start the others onesI think days is possible for one Slaangor. I allready have a painting schema in my head but it doesn´t look like MR stumpo does with his. I will go with a more natural look which makes sure that he will fit to my other miniatures.

@ Icon Hack
I will add these units to my keeper of secrets and other Slaanesh stuff.

Here a pic of a Chaos Champion WIP

The tail is only a rough form which has to be cutted in shape and the head is still a single bit which isn´t connected right to the torso.

I hope you like it

Very nice Slaanesh champ, but I have one minor comment: I prefer when the bottles are painted in such as they were made of glass, meaning you can see through them and see liquid in them.

But altogether, very nice model.

Those models are beautiful!
They really capture the image of how slaangors should/could look like.
The muscles are so......so.....ahhhh.

As a sworn Slaanesh worshipper I can say that Slaanesh will be very pleased with these.

Oh how sweet music for the ears will the screams of the dying be when you lead these Slaanesh-blessed creatures into battle!

A question for you, GeOrc: What is the brown material that the leg armor and nipples are made from? Something that has different properties than green-stuff?

That's original.

Does it have different modelling characteristics from green-stuff, or is it just a different color?

yes it has,
GS is better for non hard areas like flesh or clothing, because of its high surface tension it rounded his edges. sharp edges are only possible with cuting and sanding which is tricky on GS.
BS is for al hard areas, like armour because it has no surface tension and hold it´s shape better.

OOh these are wonderful, as expected from someone with GeOrc's undeniable talents.

As the official Slaaneshi representative on this site, I can tell you that these get the seal of approval from the Dark Prince Hirself.

Awesome work as always Georc - can't wait to see these painted.

Thanks DP, allways good to have slaaneshs blessing ;)

I have here the last pics. I can´t add the second sword because I haven´t the right one, but I ordered it today on local GW shop and will finish this soon. But the rest is finished and I can show here the last pics. I still have to glue it togethere and to connect the parts, also make it ready for painting ;)

I hope you like the final result:

Beautiful work as always G.

Can you talk a little bit about your green stuff work? How you get such a smooth texture? What mix ratio are you using? What tools/lubricants?

thx Heldrak,
I mix Green stuff with Super Sculpey.
blue yellow Sculpey -> 1:1:<1
use more yellow when I need a more sticky stuff, example leather belt on leg armour, or more blue if I need a harder variant like the head. sculpey adds a longer cure time and a better smoothing attribute to the putty. For lubricant I use spittle, sounds disgustful but works best imo. My most important Toos are a WAX5 and the WAX sculpturing Tool No 5 both from www.Tiranti.co.uk , 90% of the Slaangor I have sculptured with both tools. Further I have some special tools for special tasks, these are the other 10%, these are dental and foot care tools, but also different needles. especially bigger needles are very important. A very good one is a leather needle becuase thisone has a triangular rounded form with a thinner head. Needles are first choice for sculpturing faces! Also for some smoothing of smaller details. To smooth your surface it´s important to have the right tool (firstones I have described) and then you must smooth during the different cure times. in the end, GS is very good to smooth and hold his shape. The sculpey helps to better smooth attribute in the end cure phase.

Hope this helps Regards GeOrc

GeOrc.

Fantastic. Really superb. But I have a few questions for you:
1) Doesn't the neck need joining better?
2) The Tail still looks alittle bland and big at the end...
3) With the Super sculpy mixed in with the GS do you need to bake it in the oven, I know you have to with pure Super Sculpy, and I was wondering if it were true for the mixture.

4). Its not a question, but thanks for that link. Thats great. I may have to treat myself to some new tools...

thx RasputinII

1.) yes it is still a single part which is only put on the neck. I have to glue it in and to fill gaps to finish it.

2.) Here I will go with the original from Mr. Stumpo, but you are right, I also get a lot of critic in this point.

3.) there is no need for baking using only 1/3 in a mix. GS is an epoxiputty which cures with a chemical reaction. This reaction let also cure the polymeric clay ( Sculpey ) I know from others that FIMO or Magic Sculpey works as well.

4.) no problem allways happy if I can help

Oh, few. I'm glad you are finishing the neck. Will you be making an entire unit? I should like to see a unit, and indeed the fully painted beastman you have here...

Oh, and about that link, it turns out they have a store in a very convenient location, so I can just buy from there :D. Thanks again.

these are very interesting models GeOrc and well sculpted. Although wouldn't it have been simpler for the torso to just use a marauder torso?? - Lord K
He is both tactically minded and a savage fighter. He is feared throughout the Drakwald and rightly so, known by many names he is best known as One-Eye.

Wow, GeOrc, that is a great piece of art. Do I understand that this one model has been worked on for about more than 3 evenings so far?
