[PLOG] Lord Azoth´s Dark elves Painting Log [finished]

Post by Lord_azoth »

Hi all, this is what I´m doing right now... a 20 warriors unit..so I´m too lazy I made a "filler" for this unit. It´s equivalent to 6 warriors 4x6 cm ...

They are warrior from Gamezone, an Spanish company. I dont´t like them a lot, but GW´s ones look worse to me...

the photos show the base colour, last night I dipped them (don´t know how to say it really in English, I used a mix os matt varnish + asphalt -> this was the translation I found for betun de judea)...

hope you like it

The filler:

Image

the filler comes from West wind miniatures, from a blsiter of its "bad" elves

The unit:

Great looking minis IMO. They look like GWs but still slightly better. Like a mix of Warriors and Executioners.
Unit filler and Champion and Standard Bearer are my favorites.

I like the paint scheme too. You really mixed it evenly with the black, red and metal.

You wrote that it is WIP so I don´t know what you are planing to do more. But the red need more deep. I believe that a simple wash with dark ink would do wonders.
You need to repaint the movement tray. ;) Don´t leave it green.
Bases are nice looking but I would give them a dark ink wash too.

All in all a really good looking Warrior unit.

Mounted Sorcerer

Post by Lord_azoth »

I´ve left the warriors for a while ...

I´ve decided to make a mounted sorcerer, but for all steeds mounted one..dark steed, pegasus, dragon etc..

For this, I´ll drill her out instead gluing her so I can change the mount freely

These minis are also from spanish company, GameZone...

This is the horse/pegasus, I elongated a bit the legs and drill a good pin (steel bar) to hold the horse in differente bases (25x50mm for horse, 40x40mm for pegasus)

Image

rear view, you can se the holes to introduce the sorcerer pinning

Image

last view for the horse, I elongated the neck also..gamezone minis (specially horses, look totally cool to me..but setting them is hard..very hard..

Image

pinned sorcerer

Image

sorcerer and mount, joined through the holed pin...

Image

Image

I know the wings can be a problem playing, but if the problem appears, I´ll use only the base temporarily...

1) horse base, 25x50mm, must retouch it

Image

mounted in the "running" base:

Image

2) monster/pegasus base, 40x40mm..

Image

mounted in the "flying" base:

Image

Image

I cant bear her strange and bald head!! ... so modelled a little hair base...I´ll make details with GS

They look great and all, but I worry that they're going to outshine considerably any and all Black Gaurd you might wish to include. In fact, I think they should be your Black Gaurd. Seriously, they're going to stand alongside Malekith's Finest and say, "what, couldn't afford cool armour?"

sorcerer and mount finished:

Image
with GS have detailed the long hair, I´ll try to do small pointy ears... If can´t this will be the final step of her.

Image

Image
The mount has all stuff sanded down and fitted.. I´ve made some addings to the mane with GS to compensate the lengthen of the neck

chariot...
I mixed the GW chariot and the CO of Gamezone (hate the old fat scaly cows from GW) the main problem was fixing both in a natural way to avoid a forced conversion

Image

Image

Image

Image

the green spots in the CO are a mix of GS and glue to fill gaps and make the CO solid (didn´t want to pin everything) ... Ill have to sand them down and do a little cutting...

This will be the base for the chariot, a thin layer of a chip stuff, after drying it will be sanded, carved to make the flagstones as the rest of units

Image

the riders will be the GW ones.
My idea is that the chariot will be composed of 3 parts:

base+CO
chariot
riders

joined with pins, easier to transport, also if I make a heroe on foot, Ill pin him and will be able to use him on foot or on chariot...

Chariot finished

Post by Lord_azoth »

this weekend has been less proctive than I would wanted..but at the end the chariot is finished

Chariot
I´ll make a little explanation about how I make bases, the example will be the cariot one
1) I draw a grid in the base I showed in the last post, and with a small saw for cutting metal cut the main lines
Image

2) I use the showed tool to make craves and marks
Image

3) I cut some flagstones, make some carves and holes etc. with the tools showed. I stop When I´m satisfied with the overall look
Image

after this I glue some sand to cover holes and make the ruinous look

As I said the chariot will be set by pieces:

1) riders and spears:
Image

see the pins

2) Chariot, you can see the pins to join the CO
Image
Image

3) CO + base

Image
Image
Image

assembled Chariot:

Image
Image
Image
Image
Image

detail of the join between chariot and CO
Image

Today I´ll spray the sorcerer, steed, bases and all the pieces of the chariot... Let´s paint

Nice !!!

I like the "lost civilisation" look that your bases provide.
What is the material you put on the base before cutting the grid. Is it plaster ?

it´s a bicomponent putty from a local store (a stroe which suplies molds materials etc.). http://www.feroca.com/ (Spain)

It´s like milliput but less subtle. You can mix it with GS or use it alone (like in bases). Unlike GS, this one can be sanded, and cut in angular ways better.

painting chariot

Post by Lord_azoth »

Painting stage has started... now I´ll be doing more slowly, I´m too slow painting

the colour scheme is very basic:
red : Foundation one
gold: shining gold + a bit of turquoise + a bit of burnt brown

turquoise (vallejo one) for details (this will be the color for CO)

other metallics, boltgun, chainmail + a bit of purple

the photos are not exactly showing the colours (they have been autoadjusted by the photoshop in colour), and the turquoise looks more like blue, is greener)

One step of the chariot before being finished:

Image

The chariot finished, totally basecoated ready to apply the mix of varnish and asphalt as the warriors:

Today I´ll start with the raiders....

I love what you did with the tiles. that already looks cool unpainted. if I hadn't based my whole army already, i'd steal that idea. well, maybe I will for the next bigger model i do, we'll see. well done mate

Please can you write more about base painting?
What colour and techniques you use?
Thanks.

Looks very good although I seriously hate those Cold Ones. I never understood why so many people seemed to like those models, even compared to the Battle Cows.

Hi agian after holidays!.. Im back with this little dark pointy ears..

As I said I´m more confortable setting up than painting, so I´ve left the pegasus by now and starting to set one unit of GZ dark riders....and it has been like hell...

I enlarged necks and legs to avoid them to look like ponies, and the alloy is so bad than pinning was horrible.
As you canb see in the photos some hooves have disappeared because when I tried to drill legs to insert the thick pin to the base the leg literally shredded... ARGGHH!!

So now I must fill all the gaps and redo hooves in some horses

Image

Here are the raiders, they dont have any conversion, only a big pin to insert them in the horses, initially I think they wont be glued...maybe easier transport but we´ll see

about the base, It´s explained posts above.
Putty carved + foundation paint (deheneb stone I think) and a mix of matt varnish + asphalt

Minis: This is an army to play, so I want to paint it as fast as I can. I´m only giving then base colour (colours are described above) and applying the same mix of matt varnish and asphalt...

After this I´ll apply highlights etc.
