Re: [PLOG] Devils time to share

Post by Holt »

Found the motivation to make the shelf for my painting tray last week. All it took was an early finish at work and a bit of bordem.

ImageImage

Those under coated RBTs on my paint table have had some paint attached to them. They have previously been painted but, with the paint scheme of my Dark Elves slowly developing, they have been left behind. The reds that I have been using are slowly becoming darker, along with the older bleached bone colour making more of an appearance with each new unit.

A quick before and after photo.

ImageImage

And a couple of other poses.

ImageImage

All loaded up and ready for their next tournament outing in 2 weeks time.

Nice update. Army is coming together nicely. Good to see a nice mix of new and classic RBTs.

It's easy to run a mix of old and new models when the old ones are normally quite cheap :p Thanks for the comments.

That's a very artistic painting table you have there devil - you could hang that on the wall and call it art ;)

Nice update - how did you get on with the terrain pieces

I have had a couple of people say the same thing about my painting table. I like the look of all the paint building up over a few years, can't imagine it would go down too well if I was to have it framed and put up in the lounge room though haha.

The terrain has taken a bit of a back seat at the moment. With so much on a few things get pushed to the side occasionally and unfortunately for the terrain it was its turn to have a bit of a quiet patch. That been said I may have a free afternoon to do some work on it today.

3 months and no update? Slacking off a bit... the painting is still happening but nothing too extraordinary enough to take photos of apparently. 5 more Warlocks and a couple of pegasus heroes made the painting table over the last couple of weeks if I recall correctly.

After a game today I decided that my Shades would finally receive a paint job that actually matches my army. Way back when these Manflayer models were a Dogs of War unit it made sense that they would be their own colours but now that those days are long gone it is time for an update.

These were originally painted by a friend going on 8 or 9 years ago.

ImageImage

And after...

ImageImage
Image

There are 3 shades of red used on there, just a bit hard to tell properly with my phone app lighting and lack of photo skills.

Those manflayers make great shades, way better than the standard ones! I was hoping GW was going to update shades last time, but it might be worth tracking some of those down.

They turn up on Trade Me every now and then. A couple of months ago there were 2 units at the same time and they only went for about $30! I'll keep an eye out and forward you the link if I see any come up.

A while ago I painted up the Malektih on dragon model for a painting comp and have recently done up a list with him on foot so needed a model for him. With the official model costing hundreds that isn't an option so I tipped out the bitz box and came up with...

Image

I spent ages trimming back a Dark Riders head so I could give it a Warlock mask to wear, so much filing down of fingers. But it didn't quite feel right. A sacrifice was needed to truly make this model Malekithy.

Image

The sacrifice? Quite appropriately, Morathi! Her head anyway.

Image

Much better! Taking inspiration from my previous model I took to painting.

Previous model:
Image

I'm stoaked with how the sword has come out. I wanted to do something like how I had on my dragon version but there were no raised details to do this with. Instead I faded black into green and it turned out a lot better than I expected. It looks as if the face is missing something to make it pop but I don't have a lot to work with and I am happy with how it looks in real life.

I've been a bit quiet here, mostly due to working on my Daemons/Warriors army but I figured that I may as well post the pictures here too :D

Who wore it better? The End Times edition

And a before photo. This is what he looked like when he appeared on Trade Me

Inspired by my Archaon painting... Skullcrushers!

Image

Going all out with popsicle sticks and wire so I don't have to touch the model I'm painting too. It's like I know what I'm doing or something, pretending to at least

All(most) done!

There isn't too much left to go after a peer presure fueled painting session. Just the banner to go and then a tidy up of the bases along with some flock. Then into storage they go so I can get to work on the next models.

http://imgur.com/a/0YeMD

This was my original inspiration: http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-YPRXR3fz4fY/U ... G_7862.JPG

While mine aren't nearly as bright or flawless I'm stoaked with how they have turned out! I was torn on the grey colour used on their plate armour but now I am sure it was the right choice, just to break up all the red and bronze. And just 9 months was all it took haha.

Flicking between the photos makes mine look really unfinished though so don't do that !lol!

So my assassin doesn't look too bad in red but I wish the method I tried on the cloak had come out better. I tried to go from light to dark on the cloth as opposed to the usual dark to light way I paint. I figured that this way I could use thinner coats and get the paint to seep into the lower areas instead of trying to dry brush lighter colours on top, aiming to end up with a smoother finish. It went alright, just a practise thing I think. I ended up with a very rich single colour instead of a dark to light shading effect.

I put these photos in as an album like because they're a bit bigger.

All done! 20 hours was all it took

Chariot number 2 is already waiting on the paint table

Took a bit of advice and went out and bought a new bronzy/gold colour so it should give a better initial coverage and save myself a 3 or 4 coats of the bronze just to get a solid colour going so the next one should be a walk in the park in comparison. The guy on the back has a plain black base because he is only magnetised there and can be swapped out for an elf model for when I want to take Dread Elf chariots. The paint scheme is pretty much the same and the guy pulling the chariot looks more than capable of the 4 str 4 attacks the Dread Elf raptors put out, also looks like he may have a bit of a case of stupidity... I was a little concerned with him been the same colour as the base but my lore (read:excuse) is that he would be the same colour as his environment if he was running around the Chaos Wastes or wherever they live now days trying to avoid predators.

Just a quick one and a bit day paint job for this guy. He snuck in between me dry brushing chariot pieces and turned out to be a fairly simple job. I was quite lost when I put the model together, I wanted to go grey to match the beasts pulling the chariots but it didn't feel like it would lend itself to it. I was also worried that, without a chariot to pull it out of the base like the other beasts, it would disappear into the basing. Instead, I fell back onto my bone/wash and red horn scheme that I have used for other monsters and the dogs that will be in my Warriors lists.

I gave the Agrax Earthshade a go and after spilling the pot of it everywhere I managed to get enough on the model to get the same result as I would have gotten if I had just simply dipped the model  I gave it a couple of dry brushes over with bone and another, different, wash and called it done enough before I started eating into the detail. It is a Mantic model and the detail doesn't seem as defined as the GW stuff, it started to round off with only a couple of layers of paint. I do quite like the model though with the exception of it's tiny head. When I get hold of my bits box again there may be a bit of a change here if I can find something suitable.

The red should tie it back into the army while still looking reasonably monstery. Once again the photos make the red look quite thick but it must just be the lighting, all the layers were either 90% water or drybrushed on. Too big to be a spawn on a 40x40mm base, this model has just scraped in as a Slaughterbrute or Bloodbeast as it is known in 9th. I think it looks like it could deliver its statline so should be fine, even if maybe more of a Slaughter-runt.

So there's a quick update of what I have been up to over the past year. While only one of them really belongs here I'm sure people wont complain too much about seen other models too :P

Looks great - the head looks a bit odd though, would be better if you filled the gaps in the neck!

Looking forward to seeing more :D

Yea I'm not keen on the head. I'd like to swap it out for something else so it's only tacked in there at the moment. My bits box is in a storage shed at the moment though so that's one for the future. The gap in the shoulder area is a bit of a shame too, it didn't really stand out until I got some paint on it.

That's what I get for rushing a model through after taking my time on all the other things ;)

I've been getting a fairly constant couple of hours painting most nights and they've produced a couple more results!

First up, one of my 3 chariots got a bit damaged at some point so I cut the mauler/gorebeast free of his restraints and will now be running him as a spawn/fallen beast. I can only take 2 of these types of chariots anyway so doesn't work out too badly.

[+] SPOILER
Image

And the second chariot. I used most of the alternate bits when putting this together so there was a bit of variety going on. I also hacked into one of the models from the chaos shrine kit and stole his top half. I put this onto the charioteer legs for a bit more variety. These chaos guys are huge compared to the elves I'm used to and cutting a single piece model in half was a fair bit of work in comparison!

And I couldn't leave out a group photo!
