Paints for my DE army

Post by earache666 »

Looking for some complete lists of paints for painting a dark elf army? I am planning a trip to the city in a week or two and was going to try and stock up.
I understand everyone has their own 'flavour' but i'd like any advice anyone is willing to offer, and what sort of paints are most people using....Citadel, Vallejo, Army Painter etc?
I want to paint my army in a very similar colour scheme to the new book but I want to add some flashes of a menacing crimson/blood red in there?
Any ideas and/pics and or tips/lessons/advice :D

Hi,

If you want to mimic the exact colour scheme of the GW Dark Elves, you could buy the Dark Elves painting guide (http://www.games-workshop.com/en-US/How-to-Paint-Citadel-Miniatures-Dark-Elves-Interactive-iBook-Edition) and use the paints the 'Eavy Metal team used. If you're like me Apple-impaired, maybe some of the nice people on this forum who do have the download could help you out.

Personally, I use a bunch of different paints (Citadel old, new and very very old (still in the hexagonal bottles), P3 from Privateer Press, model color and game color from Vallejo. For the metallic paints I use Vallejo air (their airbrush colours). I even use Tamiya paints (smoke for blackening metal and clear red (with a little dab of smoke) for totally gory blood effects. All these paints are of excellent quality, but Citadel is by far the most expensive (amount of paint vs money).

In the following link, you get a comparative table with all the different kinds of acrylic paints

I am a really big fan of P3's Sanguine Base and Sanguine Highlight for a really deep, dark red. It's a great color. I also use their skin tones - Midlund Flesh, Khardic Flesh, and Ryn Flesh.

Other than that, most of the stuff I use on Dark Elves is Citadel. I love their Purples, and their washes. For the metal color, to me the P3, Citadel, and Vallejo are all pretty much interchangeable. I do recommend getting some of Vallejos "Metal Medium" - it's neat for metal highlights and mixing with non-metallics to make them metallic. I don't know of any other product that does that.

Also the Citadel technicals are cool. If you want to do blood effects "Blood for the Blood God" is nice. Also the "Agrellan Earth" is great for basing - it cracks when it dries.

I use mostly P3 paints these days. In large part, it's because you get more paint per pot than Citadel. I do use the Citadel Shades though -- I think they are the best pre-mixed shading washes out there (I used to make my own with inks and acrylic medium).
