Hi all!

As promised, I will be using this thread to show my noob painting skills :)
I am a slow painter and will be using as much of my free time as possible to keep this going, so please bear with me.
I can take harsh critics, I am striving to get better afterall. So far I have painted only 9 spearmen.

Image

Image

Too much on purple? I was not 100% sure with the tone but I went with it anyway. Perhaps I could use darker purple for main colour.

And here are my attempts on frozen bases.

Image

Perhaps they could get better with a tad more snow, I dont know.

Left one is a decorflex with rocky surface and the right one has cork :)
The middle one is an experimentation on a frozen lake, tried to make crackles etc.
I am not sure which one to go, initial idea was to use different bases for every unit but keep the general idea of frozen setting. For example , frozen lake bases for corsairs etc.
Or I'll just choose one and stick to it for whole army.

Thats it for now.

Thanks for comments and critique :)

Not at all noobish, I like them. I like your purple and it's not too much. Are the shoes painted? If they are you missed a purple spot, unless you want them with purple highlights.
I was going to say: "Nicely painted, now do the bases" and then I saw the bases. I like the left and right, but mostly the right one.

Good painting for a self-confessed beginner 8) I like the colour scheme too :)

Really solid start. Looking forward to more.

The rightmost basing style looks best IMO.

Really nice for the first few models, keep up the good work!

I prefer the base on the right of the pic, though the middle one might be a nice idea - maybe tone back the blues a little bit though to a lighter, more 'icey' blue? And I think you've got a good amount of snow on there, it looks a little like the slush you get when you've walked through the snow rather than a pristine field of it, which is exactly what would happen when an army marches!

Looking forward to more updates!

For a self confessed newbie I think your painting is good. Certainly better than some stuff I have seen.
I agree with the above comments about the bases, the right one is the best.

If you think the purple is too bright you could apply a purple wash to tone it down.
One criticism I will make is, clean off all the mould lines, it can ruin an otherwise nicely painted miniature. That said, I can only see one on the spear. :)

People tend to rush when painting, but if you keep a nice steady pace and just paint cleanly you will have a nice looking army.
I've seen an entire Druchii army painted in just flat colors, red , black, boltgun metal etc, and it looked great on the table.

Keep up the good work, I look forward to seeing more :)

I am very sorry for checking in after so long
Thank you all very much for praises and critisms!

I did continue painting , albeit very slowly and got some shots to share :)

Image

My 12 spearmen from battalion box, don't ask why I ranked them 6 wide- I have no idea =))
The standard is blank right now- cause I am afraid of freehand lol

Image

10 Crossbowmen with a musician. I am planning to use new models for the next 10 of them.

And here is a close shot

Image

Next up is a corsair color scheme test, it turned out a bit different than what I had imagined. But its ok I guess. Also it was the first time I tried to paint eyes, was a bit of struggle :)

And the cloak:

Thats it for now

thank you for comments and critisms ;)

The painting skill is definitely there with the corsairs. Im not sold on the blue for the inside parts of the skin though. If you are painting it with washes only, 2 or 3 coats of devlan mud would do it and would tone them down towards the colour of your other troops (which I really like).

Beginners painting log it says. Wow. Great work mate, those bases are really something else, I still have a hard time figuring out how to finish mine off.

Thank you very much for comments :)

I am trying to get better and learn new tricks as I go.
sometimes I tend to rush a bit though...
But usually I get back and fix as much as I can :D

@Elvenstar; My original idea was a brown skin for the cloak and blue scales but I ended up doing it all blue and liked the result. Though I may try as you suggest and compare them:)

Love the bases on those warriors! I'm aiming for something similar with my own snow-themed bases, though probably without the grass. I do like the slushy-ness of the snow, as Ilmaestro pointed out!

Corsairs are looking lovely as well. Perhaps if I were to make any minor changes, it would be to distinguish the blue skin tone from the blue of the cloak/legs somehow. Though I could understand that decision if you were consciously trying to minimize the number of different colours on them

Looking forward to seeing more!

@Scythe; Thank you! The grass was a late addition but I liked it:)
Yes I tried to minimize the colors but my original idea actually was the other way around. I'd use gold and the same brown tone I used on my warriors. I've painted two more corsairs and tried something different with their skin and eyes. I will show them soon

@van Awful; Thank you mate! And I think I saw it somewhere on this board and decided to make one reloading crossbowelf for myself as well;)

So its been awhile, I am awfully slow painter..but I finally completed 10 corsairs.
I kept the blue, I am not sure if it could be better with brown color I used on my warriors.
Here they are:

Image

Image

Image

Image

I decided to use a bit gold on the command to distinguish them more.

Next will be warlocks and I think my 500 points will be;

Master, with dark steed and mundane equipment (I assume this is what everyone's short way of saying ha,sdc, lance, shield? :D)

10 Darkshards, musician
10 Corsairs, AHW , FC

5 Warlocks

The Corsair banner looks fantastic, and the gold on the command group does make them more distinguishable. The eyes are very impressive!

That is generally what is meant by full mundane, minus the lance you listed.
I like the SDC colour, very natural looking shade. The gold works well on the command models too.
Nice update, looking forward to seeing more.

Aurelius and Amboading, Thanks for comments! :)

I have half finished a test model of warlock but couldn't progress for a good while,
being away from home I can't paint :(
Hopefully I'll get back to it soon, I am anxious to show the progress

Meanwhile
I've had time to check the new webstore of GW and noticed dragon wings bits. How big are those anyone know?
I know I'll be needing a pegasus and am currently looking for options.

Dragon wings tend to be a little too big for pegasi conversions unfortunately. Vargheist wings however work, as do dark eldar bat and angel wings from their jump pack troops. Plenty of options.

Soo its been awhile I know, and finally some update time.

RL is keeping me away from the hobby but I am doing everything to hold onto it! Believe I am working hard for it! :)

I am lurking boards often nowadays and try to find time to do some occasional painting.
Gaming-wise, I did poorly, I couldn't even play properly to learn 8th edition and now AoS has launched.

I really like the Goretide models and may pick up some models to paint, but currently I am sticking to my dark elves.
I have promised to show the work I have done with warlocks and finally finished them.
Behold:

Image

This is the first time I am painting a horse, and the first time using a green stuff.
I have read a few articles and had to experiment for awhile, it was a struggle but I quite enjoyed it.

I thought I could add some fire and this is what I came up with.
Not perfect and not quite what I had in mind when I first started, but it turned out ok I guess :)

I have painted the body and horses seperately. Here is a guy before getting glued onto a horse:

Image

Image

Image

And here are them finished:

Next up will be bolt thrower and its crew.

Comments and critique are welcome! :)

EDIT: Added two more photos.

Nice job on the Warlocks an good to see you progressing with the army.

The army has a nice cohesive look to it so far. My only comment - the purple on the horses breast plate looks like it could do with a wash other than that they look great!

Thanks for comments!

I think I actually did wash those plates but then I have gone and painted more layers on it.

Oh and bolt thrower is finished!

I guess its so easy to spot some mistakes when taking close shots after painting. Some parts look really different to plain eye :)
