Some really old GW stuff (updated with Flagellants)

Post by Gnosis »

Painted these models up for Frostgrave, which we'll be playing pretty much like Mordheim 2.0. I've had these almost as long as I've been involved in wargaming, so it's been refreshing to paint something up from the bottom of the lead pile for a change!

I went for the more 'arcane' colours with my necromancer as I thought he'd still be flamboyant. I also didn't have a good deep purple (pun unintended) so I had to make do with the pale lilac edge paint washed with purple and blue to get anywhere. The other colours are sotek green and khorne red, both of these were washed with purple and blue as well before being highlighted up again.

These skeletons are some very old GW plastics which were released in 1991, meaning they're the same age as my girlfriend. Kind of strange to think of, really ;)

Yeah, it's one of those cases where you're dry fitting a model and you suddenly end up with a great pose. I had no idea they had it in them!

Thanks, guys :)

I have no idea who makes (or used to make) these models, but after lingering down at the bottom of the lead pile for fourteen years Frostgrave has finally given me an excuse to paint them up. Whoever can source these models gets a cookie!

That's a shame - it looks like a pretty fun game.

That said, it would appear that the spirit of the game lives on: http://www.chronopiaworld.com/index.php

It includes free rules for the last edition of the rulebook (2nd edition) and you can either substitute in your old GW minis or purchase specialist Chronopia ones on Ebay (you can also purchase a copy of the rules in print there). Quite a nice find!

Edit, I just scanned the rule book now: well worth the read, if only for the pretty incredible 40 or so pages of fluff at the start, which is really well done!

Someone on Facebook pointed me to Chronopia, and no, these were not converted in any way. Pretty cool how they released undead versions of their factions! I miss the day when GW had Richter Kreugar's Cursed Company, if I'd known the way the company has gone I would've bought that unit.

Some more GW models have been pressed into use for Frostgrave, here's my apprentice who is a kitbash of Empire Free Companies, Greatswords and Wizard kits:

And some Flagellants which I'll be using as Infantrymen which are reasonably cheap soldiers with two-handed weapons:

The wizard with the flask is awesome. The smoke above the flask looks like it's making a skull/moaning face (not sure if that's intentional or the angle, but it's legit).

Thanks. The idea behind the wizard (who performs as an apprentice in my games of Frostgrave) is that he's quite startled by opening the flask with the demon in it, hence his cartoony hair explosion and his turning prematurely grey. I suppose the demon is mocking him, yes ;)

That old Necromancer is a really cool model. Nice paintjob you gave him!
