Restarting my Dark Elves
Hello folks! I decided to dig up my ancient dark elf projects from when I was a ten year old lad, they looked like they could use a little touch up.
This is the colour scheme I'm going for, I wanted to try something different that my previous army.
Cold One knight. I prefer the older knight models, but the newer cold ones are alot better.
And a Witch elf, pretty challenging to paint such pale flesh, I've never done that before.
This Sorceress is not obviously one of my old figs, pretty satisfied with how she turned out.

Thanks!
Yes I will base them eventually ^^ I still haven't got an idea as to how yet though.

Re: Restarting my Dark Elves
Really nice colour selection. Although I'm not fond of snowbases, I think they might look alright on these minis. Something grey might look good too. Generally, anything that doesn't add colour, but still contrasts sufficiently with the fairly dark purple. Anyhow, that would be my guess
I'm looking forward to more pictures!

Re: Restarting my Dark Elves
Thanks for the compliments and input! I do not want to make snow bases again since my Chaos army had it.
I am considering one of the following from this site:
http://row40k.blogspot.se/2012/11/basin ... asics.html
- Warptainted lands
- Dooooooomed world
- Blasted Plain
They are all greyish which will make the purple more visible.

Re: Restarting my Dark Elves
I think I inspired my own bases on their wasteland recipe. My only remark would be to add something to break the evenness of the surface. Especially on larger bases it pays off. Skulls, rocks, plants, debris, runic stones, ruins.. anything one thing is fine I went for rocks myself because that was easiest and I'm not that good a painter.

Re: Restarting my Dark Elves
Whilst the new Cold One Knights set has superior Cold Ones, I still prefer the old riders by far. Nice colour scheme, I've always found tertiary colours to work well together.
Count them:

That's a nice looking unit there.
Yeah! I agree ... I use my old riders for mounted characters now.

Painted up another sorceress. Took a while to decide on how to paint the magic effect but in the end I went for fire since it contrasts with the colour scheme.

Re: Restarting my Dark Elves
Nice work, I like the effect personally. It is magic rather than reality.
Re: Restarting my Dark Elves
Fire and flames do not look like that.
May I suggest to keep that colour for the heart of the fire column, but to add some smoke around?
In particular, the bottom should be nearly all smoke, with hints of fire, and the higher you get, the brighter.

I disagree the base/centre of the fire should be the lightest - the hottest part white, going to yellow, orange, red then black/smoke on the outside.
I do agree that the fire needs some work it just looks yellow at the moment.
Re: Restarting my Dark Elves
Of course, Cult is right.
However, some consideration could be given to the dynamics:
the branch around the arm could well be the hottest part, everything else being sort of the tail of the flame.
Just wondering, not arguing (especially with CoK )

Re: Restarting my Dark Elves
Yep I agree with Calisson - you need to choose where the source of the fire is coming from and highlight / vary the colour from there.

Re: Restarting my Dark Elves
Thanks for your critique! I tried to decide the center of the flame at first but it didn't come out right with all the skull-shapes in the flames. The colours of this photo is pretty washed out hence the yellow, I based it with a white and yellow mix and then drybrushed my way up to red. I'll provide a better picture when I can manage.

Re: Restarting my Dark Elves
I touched up the flames a bit.
One of the main problems was that I hadn't used enough red when painting previously, that and bad lighting.
Edit: the pic seems to be alot brighter when I see it on my computer.

Re: Restarting my Dark Elves
That's better indeed.
For a more dynamic paint, I'd consider making the "tail" (behind sorceress) much darker, the "cloud" below somehow darker and making the "head" of the fire (in her hand) even brighter.
