So a new year has begun and with it hopefully some enthusiasm to paint a new army!

Let's kick this year off with a bang and see what we all can paint.

JANUARY'S CHALLENGE
To make it a simple start to the year l'm sure most of you could rustle up a hero or lord to paint.
Post your before and after pictures and lets get some discussion happening on our favourite part of the hobby.

I was going to paint a unit, but I also have to paint a Bloodstoker. I'll do that one as well then!

Having just returned to a location with working internet and where I don't have to look after a toddler quite as much of the time, I'll book myself in to paint a Tenebrael Shard.

I'll work on my Malekith on foot conversion and if I get time I'll try to squeeze in a sorceress on dark pegasus. I'll edit this with pics later.

My Malekith conversion is made from bits from the Black Dragon kit and the armor is from the Chaos Sorcerer. Once it's painted I'll give my best effort at making a green stuff cloak. I'm looking at black armor with gold trim, and will apply some object source lighting on his hand and possibly his eyes.

That's a really nice conversion Malys! Looking forward to seeing him painted.

That Malekith conversion is awesome!

Unfortunately, I am still very busy sorting out various family health crises, so I'm not able to commit to any hobby projects yet. My Sorcerer of Slaanesh is next on my list of stuff to paint, but whether I get him done this month is looking doubtful.

Can this be for all armies? Or is it really meant for DE/Dread Elves?

It can be for any army!

How is everyone going so far - I must say I need to get cracking myself :D

Malekith is base coated, I just need to do some touch ups before I shade him. This is going to be a busy weekend but we'll see how it goes.

I'm working on several models. Can be anything from me! Knight, character, monster. But my camera broke so that's an added challenge :D

Just need to base the Shard - not my best work, but should get there (parental duties notwithstanding...)

I've been distracted by trying to paint some Sigmarines to use the much-neglected Wardens of the Realmgate battalion, which is IMHO one of the better "counter-Lightning Strike" options out there.

Done! Not my finest work, but moving house means I won't get a chance to do any more on it. The skin-cloak stitches need work, but otherwise it's about done.

Apologies for the big pictures, I wasn't sure how to shrink them properly in the time I had available.

I will try to finish a unit of 15 Legionnaires with full command in for the January challenge.

Great model and work Haagrum! Hope our new Dark Elves will get that look from Games Workshop, any news or rumours when we can expect some new models from them?

Nice work Haagrum on the mini!

Malys - how's yours coming?

What do we want to paint next month?

(Apparently Photobucket edits don't look like they have caught up yet so sorry if the pics look too big or dark...)

Here is my converted Malekith on foot. I'm going to invoke the "technically..." rule in that technically the model is finished being painted, but I still have to sculpt a cloak for him...
I used a few reference art pieces to determine how I wanted to paint him and I ultimately settled on some of the artwork from End Times: Khaine. I think the biggest challenge with this model was all the black armor. Black in my opinion is hard to highlight because if it's not subtle it becomes....not black. The other challenges were his sword and his glowing palm. The palm was easy enough but trying to gauge exactly where to put the glow on Malekith and the ground was tricky. I didn't want the effect to be overpowering but it needed to take the edge off all the black. For the sword I wanted it too look magical yet destructive, so I wanted it to not glow, rather I wanted it to look insidious. I used an initial highlight of Khorne Red over black, followed by two washes with Carroburg Crimson, and then select highlights with 1:1 pink/red, another wash to dull it down, and then a final highlight on the tips.

Armor: Abaddon Black, Eshin Gray highlight, Drakenhoff Nightshade wash, specific Eshin Gray highlight
Gold: Game Color Gold, Agrax Earthshade wash, 1:1 Chainmail/Gold highlight
Cloth: Khorne Red, Carroburg Crimson Wash, 1:1 Khorne Red/Game Color Rosy Pink highlight
Sword: Abaddon Black, Khorne Red highlight, 2x Carroburg Crimson wash, 1:1 Khorne Red/Rosy Pink highlight, Carroburg Crimson wash, edge highlight 1:1 Khorne Red/Rosy Pink
OSL Effect: Ice Blue, highlighted up to 1:3 Ice Blue/White. Glowing areas were highlighted with the 1:2 mix.

What do we want to paint next month?

Any thoughts on this? Just want to keep going down the list, so a core unit?

Maybe do it escalation style? A Hero in January, Core in February and March, then a Special in April? Or something along those lines?

Also, did we ever come to a consensus on whether this is strictly Dark Elf, or are we opening it to other Elves as well? Because I have Wood Elves I can do as well.

I think a core unit for this coming month would be great!

No lets keep it open as possible (so it's not restricted just to dark elves)

I managed to get a few basecoats and a 1st wash in yesterday. I'll try to finish my hero tonight or tomorrow.
A core unit sounds great... Now to do more dreadspears or finish some dark riders?

You already have the most epic dreadspears ever painted haha. I am looking forward to what you can do with some dark riders. Those horses are already promising.

I will have to paint both a unit of dreadspears (only 10) and 5 dark riders to finish my army on time.
