If you're only looking for chain bits to add to models rather than sculpting them from scratch, then if you live in the UK, take a trip to Poundland and check out their delightfully cheap-n-nasty jewellery section - I picked up a necklace in there which had almost a metre of suitable fine, real metal chain for just £1 - you really can't shake a stick at that and a length like that will go a really long way in this application.
