My Har Ganeth Blog

Post by Imrillion »

Wow, so glad I can finally post!

So basically I'm making up my army around a theme for armies on parade. The general idea is to have a unit of corsairs leading captured humans in chains, from a water feature, up a path, lined with witch elves, to a hag standing atop a cauldron of blood set on a cliff. With two units of Executioners guarding the stairs to the hag.

I would like to Blog my painting and modelling, over the next yea as a record of my progress so I dare say this post could get fairly pic heavy!

Hope you like it

Thanks for your kind words - AoP is the one thing that keeps me painting each year!

I think it's mostly a case of slow a steady wins the race. You have to tackle a project like that with a clear plan of what you want to achieve and allocate work to it each month.

It's also good to break things up eg rank a file unit than a hero...

Good luck

Some very well painted executioners there! They could perhaps do with a touch more contrast on the gold, which looks a little 'flat'. But that might be the photography rather than the painting (taking good photos of minis is at least as difficult as painting them).

@cult absolutely! I tend to use my characters as rewards and monsters and chariots as incentives to complete the rank and file.

@shadow Absolutly taking that on board, I'll finish this second unit I'm working on now and go back over the gold.

I'm working on Tullaris to lead them, here's a WIP of the base

Interesting looking base - are you doing a conversion for Tullaris?

Much more bad ass now, I swapped the arms, kit bashed a new weapon and adjusted the head so he looks like he's about to ruin someone's day.

Nice work!

You seem to be getting through these fairly quickly - how long did it take you to paint the unit of exe's?

I started the project 3 weeks ago, my first WIP pic I took I posted to instagram on the 23rd of Nov. I cheat a little bit, I fully paint and blend and highlight the front rank and back rank then I batch paint the two ranks in between, with only a wash and 2 layers of highlight, otherwise it'd take me FOREVER to get through.

I think the witch elf would be improved by having her face-paint a different colour from her hair. Otherwise excellent.

@ Shadow, I deffo want to stay with the purple and black and gold, perhaps if I lighten the purple on the hair, what would you suggest?

I think I would be inclined to darken the purple sections of the hair rather than lightening them. The point is to increase the contrast between the purple hair and the face-paint, because at the moment they sort of blend together (which takes the viewer's attention away from the face). But you don't want to lose the existing contrast between the purple hair and the white hair and pale skin.

So maybe try changing the purple hair to black with a purple highlight? That darker colour will also echo the black boots and gloves, which I think will be a good visual effect. Basically, the overall look will be dark around the 'edges' of the model, with the lighter torso, lower face and crown further in, and then the purple face-paint and bright white eyes at the 'centre'. That should all help to focus the viewer's attention on the eyes.

I tried the black and purple highlights and it just ended up looking too heavy, I decided to keep the hair white and lighten the base a little, the over all gives it good balance, here's my latest WIP
