The rules are in the annual 2002
the royal hydra has +1 As, has a S2 breath weapon that ignores armour saves and has splashback(any unsaved wound it suffers in close combat causes a s2 hit on the attacker with no armour save allowed.
When it reaches 3 wounds it becomes subject to the rules for stupidity

Something that forgot to get mentioned is that all all cost more points (from +20 to +35pts) and the fact that you can only have one special hydra in your army regradless of size. though if your playing 8000+pts i think your oppenent might let you have more
I'd rather lose a closely fought game then have it all sown up in a couple of turns.

personal choice
well actually i prefer the spellthirster more then either of the other "speciallized" Hydras. i found that the randomness of the veteran can make a sound battle plan fall aprt and i personally cant justify the 35+ point cost for the royal..but that is just me..
thank you
thank you
I have yet to finish assembling my Hydra and am a little unsure as the their cost effectiveness.
I would imagine if you were spending that much on a monster a few points more to make it effective would not matter.
The Spellthirster looks good if fighting HE's. Other wise I would have chosen a veterna Hydra. Of the options (from memory) 3 were good, 1 ok, 1 not worth it and the last allows you to choose so a reasonable chance of an effective option. You still have the original Hydra.
