Oh dear not another one...

Post by Daemonic aura »

Anyone who has played inquisitor has been there. I know i will be there in my first (real) game of it in two weeks. I am speaking of that inevitable player who sits there, reads the rulebook and says "I want to be a space marine." He seems oblivious to the disappointed sighs around him, and places the book down on the table.

One of the players i am playing against has decided to do just this, simply because it means a minimum of effort, and means he can rely on his characters stats rather than actually thinking about what he is going to do. So, i have decided to really spoil his day. With this in mind, what kind of character(s) do you recommend? We have agreed that each player gets to field upto a marine points wise, and so i should be able to get a few in there. What combination of characters and equipment will work best?

It's better to look at your scenario and/or campaign and restict the use of inappropriate characters such as marines if the games can not support them. Few if any of my player actually use marines (although they all have models) because a marine is unlikely to do as well as an Inquisitor, Rogue Trader, Arbites Judge ect.
I run the games so I set what my players use. In other words, their choice of character types is restricted.

Talk to the GM about it, its really their job to balance this, essentially by completely ignoring the marine's stats (at least as far as problem solving goes) and make them roleplay and think their way through the problem.

If you are just fighting each other then you have to go the crazily powerful psyker route or several hundred cultists waiting for the lucky head shot than can stun him long enough to be killed. GMing and actually having a proper campaign/adventure rather than a random series of fights in various warehouses of the 41st millenium.

Inquisitor is about the adventure not blasting the hell out of each other with near super beings. That's what 40K is all about!

You know what I'd actually advise you to do? Roll with it. From my experiences, SM in Inquisitor are tremendous fun - because whoever plays the SM must invariably be in character, which involves charging head-first into the next room filled with twenty of the renegade inquisitor's best men (all conveniently possessed and having superhuman strength and resilience) screaming "For the Emperor!" at the top of his lungs and thus bringing in the rest of the renegade inquisitor's men to pick a fight.

Then again, this may just be because all the games of Inquisitor I've been a part of (as spectator, but still) have been the GM playing the bad guys versus a party of players each with one single model, in proper RPG style; with success based on actual roleplay rather than kills (and a karma system, which is a rating of your roleplay abilities which translates into bonuses/maluses in game).

Similar experience here. The annoying guy uses a Space Marine in Inquisitor as well as the character he got published online...we just turn round and kill any character he puts on the board, simply because he starts mouthing off and saying either character is going to show up later on...his so called Inquistor campaign lasted one week before everyone killed his characters.

Seriously, just have your entire warband blast at it, Space Marines can't live forever. Either that or just don't let him use it, last campaign we had, we only had Inquisitors in Power Armour, no Space Marines, was one of the best campaigns we've ever played.

Thanks guys. I have spoken to the GM, and put all these arguments forward. What is going to happen is it will be and my characters, as well as my mate and his playing against the SM. My mate is using an inquisitors stats but using him as a Commissar, with a cadre of guardsmen. I am toying with the idea of a daemonhuntress (with assault cannon) and 2 deathcult assassins (severina and sevora models). I am not quite sure, but we are restricted to the models we have, and i quite fancy the idea of an all-girl warband. Any hints on taking out the marine with this lot?

Best solution to space marines? Magnets and/or electro null fields... :-)

A friend of mine did this once... The center of the board had this device that negated all electicity with in a certain range... the closer you got, the more effective it was. So the space marine charges forward to destroy it and suddenly, he can't move and has to use every ounce of his strength each turn to crawl forward at a snail's pace. Funny how the death cult assassins performed really well... and how the guy with the bionic heart had a hell of a time doing much of anything.

In short, try making certain specialized scenario rules that limit the SMs effectiveness... ie, you're fighting in a tunnel thats 6 feet high... SMs are roughly 8 feet tall or other similar things.

Good luck!

Hm...I have never played Inquisitor - actually I haven´t even read the rules - but what I don´t understand is why you are fighting against each other. Isn´t Inquisitor more or less meant to b an RPG, where the players´ characters are allies or friends?
It´s nice to be important, but it´s more important to be nice.

No, it's sort of meant to be a compeditive warband RPG style thing with two rival inquisitors and their retinues working against each otehr to some goal, often wth NPCs controlled by the GM. IE: GW didn't really think it through. Big supprise....

Arquinesiel: I shockingly disagree with you. They left the game wide open with the items to let the GM and the players to decide what can happen what certain things can do. Certain alliances can be forged, rivalries can be made, and obviously the NPCs causing havoc. The games can be made so absolutely outrageous it's fun, just like the game we had where my Repentia's mission was to kill Santa, who actually turned out to be a heretic.

If you really want to mess with him do what I did one game, get a demo expert loaded with haywire grenades and such, he'll have I think one action a turn for the entire game if you keep getting him....

Otherwise just take a sniper....

I have to agree with Alkkrision. Inquisitor is designed so that it's adaptable, reletively few GM's run the games the same way. Sure the basic rules remain the same but interpretation of them varies from player to player. The system allows for players to Role-Play with or without the models, with a combination of the two, with players warbands working together, playing against each other, playing with multiple opponents or soley against the GM's NPCs. The options are endless and the rules accomodates them all. It's not a game for younger, inexperianced gamers.

Well, I've based my opinion mostly off the published campaign pack that I got (Cirian Legacy or somethign) which seemed to be a horrible hodge-podge of RP elements that became largely irrelevant since there was little room for it between all the bullets. As with all GW games there's huge scope for you to take it and make it suit your ideas but the game system as presented falls down on long term playability I find.

for the comical effect chose a shotgun with executioner shells (lots of them). then put every gun site on it. that will allow you to hit him from range and run away. also try a graviton gun. or for even more comical effect get a bolas launcher and then a knife with vampire... take him to the floor, then knife him... then attaack a demo charge... that'll teach him..

i know you've prob sorted it now, but you can always punish a SM! if you go to the conclave, theres a guy complainning that some1 had a model infected with the obliterator virus, with 36 points of armour on every location... try beating that!

I think this thread has run it's course with some very helpful points on blasting the dreaded Inquisitorial Space Marine.
