Farewell to Rank Bonuses (2,250pt List)

Post by The skaerkrow »

I'm trying something different (for me at least), and running a list that leaves my large block units and Chariots (not to mention Manticore) behind. Here's the army, for your evaluation.

1 Noble w/ Lance, Repeater Crossbow, Enchanted Shield, Heavy Armor and Sea Dragon Cloak on Dark Pegasus (General)
1 Sorceress w/ Seal of Ghrond (Level 2)
1 Sorceress w/ Dispel Scroll (Level 2)
1 Sorceress w/ Dispel Scroll (Level 2)

10 Warriors w/ Repeating Crossbows, Shields and Musician
10 Warriors w/ Repeating Crossbows, Shields and Musician
12 Corsairs w/ Musician
12 Corsairs w/ Musician
5 Dark Riders w/ Musician
5 Dark Riders w/ Musician
5 Dark Riders w/ Musician
5 Dark Riders w/ Musician

10 Witch Elves w/ Musician
10 Witch Elves w/ Musician
10 Executioners w/ Musician and Champion
10 Executioners w/ Musician and Champion

2 Reaper Bolt Throwers

Points: 2,240

The army strategy is somewhat mercurial by neccessity. With so many units I hope to exert decent board presence, and will hopefully be able to commit my various specialist units (Executioners, Witch Elves and Corsairs) to places on the field that will benefit most from their abilities. Usually my Dark Riders are just bounce and redirect units, but in this list I find myself more inclined to hold them back and use them mid-to-late game in order to hit my opponent in the flanks.

Anyhow, comments and suggestions are welcome.

I wouldn't do this. What if you get flanked by a unit of Knights. It will just literally play pinball with your army as it goes from units to unit.

I do like the list so don't get me wrong. I just think it won't work. I wish it could. But without any anvils I don't see it being successfull. Sorry. You should perhaps not take so much magic. Try to get a Cauldron of Blood for sure.

Consider putting your noble on a good ol Cold One too.

Why so many musicians. Drop them on your elite units for sure. You could have enough points to get a Highborn with all those and bit of a character switch up.

How exactly is he going to get flanked by a unit of knights? He will outdeploy the opponent up the wazoo, and has enough bait units to be able to throw a unit at them and make them overrun into the middle of nowhere ready to be flanked, or into terrain, to delay them a while.

The list just requires a bit of finesse to play with.

My question- with so many sorceresses, why only defensive kit for them? If it were me, I'd consider this- drop 2 sorceresses, add a high sorceress, give her the tome of furion, scroll and seal, give the regular sorceress a scroll and the darkstar cloak. Unless your meta is filled with Skyre and Tzeetntch armies of doom, just dropping the 120pts worth of level 2 upgrades means you get another unit of Corsairs.

So, either a) remove all the level upgrades, or b) go with a High Sorceress (you don't lose anything) and take some offensive gear.

Dancing pigeaon has a good point -- if you are spending all those points on spell casters, get some items to boost their abilities. I think you can go with 3 level 2 casters, but toss in the Darkstar Cloak, the Wand, and/or a Power Stone.

@ArnheimI recently succeeded in beating mounted Bretonninas with an army entirely of Warrior spearmen. Lots of units and bait as Pigeon says.

Fairly standard MSU list there. It should work just fine. I do have a couple of thoughts for you though.

Firstly, chariots. I know you mentioned you wanted to leave thm at home, and there is something to be said for a completely non-stupid army, but a pair of chariots instead of a unit of exces will give you more hitting power (the only thing you are slightly lacking at the moment), and their small width and good manuvrability make them idea candidates for a list like this.

As already mentioned your magic is not fully optimised, and I feel its having a knock on effect on your general. I'm not personally keen on DP nobles at the best of times, and certainly not keen on them being your general. Thus the HS idea suggested offers you a handy way to reduce the massive "kill me" sign on the noble's head by removing the general bonus. Alternatively if you keep the 3 lvl 2s (which I think are less efficent then the level 4 in this new edition) then consider putting the general on foot with a GW shield and some armour. I ran this config for a very long time, and it woks very well. He is cheap as chips, provides LD-ship and can dart between your units adding an extra kill or two with his big hitty stick, or help reduce your own losses by challanging with his shield. You can even give him an icing of doomstick if you fancy.

Lastly have you considered the COB? In a MSU list like this, particularly one with multiple Witch units its effect can be truely devastating and of massive benefit to the vast number of multiple S3 attack troops you have. Given your strong magic a straight forward swap with the RBTs wouldn't exactly leave you lacking. Alternatively you could keep the RBTs and gain the points by downgrading to purely caddy magic, freeing up points to RXB-ise your Riders, which would give you a really very strong shooting phase.

Just some ideas for you to ponder if you so wish.

"Doomstick"?

Thanks a bunch for the suggestions everyone. I revamped the list, and I'll post it up this evening. For now though, I'm off to my match. I've never tried MSU, so wish me luck.
