Shields or Two Weapons?

Shields or Two Weapons?
After just looking at the new photos of the corsairs I was wondering whther it is better to go for 2 attacks per model or +1 Armour Save.?
I thought surely 2 Attacks would be better than the extra save
For instance without the save your opponent might kill 3 Warriors. The Remaning Warrior and Champion attack back with 5 attacks.
With the Save your opponent might only kill 2 Warriors. The remaining 2 Warriors and Champ attack back with only 4 attacks.
Is the new weapon option worth it?

You'll be able to have both. One unit of each and a unit with crossbows as well. I am excited as can be about the versatility that our corsairs appear to be getting. And a special corsair character as well! Too exciting!
P.S. I can't believe how quickly the "new corsairs, worth it?" thread appeared. heck, we don't even have the models yet.

What I'd wonder is if you still have the RXP option even if you have an extra weapon or a shield. I militated against 6pt Warriors, preferring something more elite, but they'd need a massive boost or wonderful price to compete with this lot. Never mind the aesthetic reasons to take more of these Corsairs. You can always make your Warriors out of these... O my poor bank account, remember that I always loved you... [/hearts and flowers].

Another factor is how much these options would cost. I'd assume 2 hand weapons would be the standard equipment. Then there's all the rules we don't know yet, like are the crossbows piercing and always stand and shoot? I'll wait till I get some solid rules or the armybook itself before making any judgements.

quote in toto,IMO.Then a option to buy either a shield for X points, or a additional handweapon.
Then there probably will be an option to buy RxBow-pistols ontop of everything.
This is a funny topic of pure speculation, how could be possible to discuss? Without the cost in points for the corsairs, equipment and their special rules (if so...) it is like playing football without the ball

If they can have shields, it would definitely be worth going for. Rules as they are now, we're looking at 3+ASv both against shooting and in combat.

Don't knock it til you try it. As for how could we discuss without knowing, kindly allow us to demonstrate. Anyways, haven't we been doing so for months now?

Depending on cost, I could really see folks taking blocks of 15-20 with Shields as anvils and then small groups of 10 as flankers. That wouldn't be half bad.
Of course, that does depend a lot on cost.

I'm thinking the two hand weapons will still be standard, and the shield and crossbow will be options, just like the warriors are. If they keep them at the same 10 pt. base cost, they I'd expect...
Corsair, shield, crossbow -- 14-15 pts/model.
That sounds not too shabby for a 3+AS.

Since I can't really see the pistols being worth it (unless they remove the penalty for multiple shots), I'm more interested in how much they'll cost with Shield and NO RxP.
I think 11-12 points sounds fair.

Thanks, I wasn't sure if it was White Dwarf or some other source.

This is not a one is better then the other answer.
They serve completely different purposes in the army, if they do get shields:
Getting elven infantry with a +3 armor save -assuming SDC stays the same- is really great for a static CR unit that is expecting to hold for a round or two to so that support can set up for flank charges. Shields will also see more play in defensive shooting lists, and will excel against ASF and and lists that plan on accepting charges.
Two Hand Weapons will be better in list that use the cauldron of blood -assuming its effect is the same- lists that plan on winning through combined charges, fleeing from most charges, they will be better flankers and will use hatred -again assuming we get this boring rule- better with two weapons.
So one is not better then the other, it all depends on play style of play and how each army list functions.

We have now two informations about corsairs:
quote:
Corsairs:
- same as today for statistics and costs;
- may take a Magical Standard (max 25 points);
- new Special Rules UNCERTAIN: one is that they gains +50 VP for every unit killed in HtH and another one may be that A SINGLE unit may enter the battlefield like Dwarfs Miners did.
unquote.
Then comes the pics with different information:
quote:
Plenty of weapons OPTIONS such as [two] hand weapons, shields and handbow
unquote.
All put together, my humble understanding is that the corsairs will be as today for statistics and costs AND will have new weapons OPTIONS allowing them to add either a shield, a second weapon or a handbow. Cost to be determined.
So our future army book will provide us with:
- basic corsairs (2 attacks, AS 4+/5+),
- two-sword corsairs (3 attacks, AS 4+/5+),
- shield corsairs (2 attacks, AS 3+/3+),
- X-bow corsairs (2 attacks, AS 4+/5+, Xbow).
Four very different units indeed! Along with DR (with bows or not), very cheap spearmen and cheaper-than-corsairs X-bowmen (shielded or not), that provides us overall with 9 baseline troops, each of them with a specific use and specific tactics.
Did I mention the "lesser assassin", giving even more options for base troops?
Lots of discussion to forecast in druchii.net.
I would be surprised to see a fifth breed of corsairs, the jack-of-all-trade corsairs, with all options put together, two swords plus a shield plus a X-bow. Would not fit the mini! Would be very expensive, and I don’t see the practical use for such a versatility.
Wait and see.
